Hazel, Turkish airlines will let pets fly in the cargo. You have to have the health certificate of your pet. Buy a cage suitable for the animal, size does not matter as it will travel in the cargo section of the plane.

Thanks for advice. I thought you could only get a pet passport in the South which meant no need for quarantine in UK. I will contact KAR but appreciate any further advice, it's a cat btw.

Hazel I don't think that there is anyway around the dog having to do 'quarantine' of one form or another. My understanding is that any animal going back to the UK must spend a minimum of 6 months in an EU (Pet Passport recognised) country having already had its rabies jab and subsequent test to confirm that the innoculation has been successful - which in itself can take up to 3 months. However, the upside is that if you take the animal to another EU country, the animal spends its' 6 months at home with you rather than going into 'kennelled' quarantine. As I say, this is my understanding and should by no means be taken as gospel !! Paul

I don't know if this could help you ? My friends last year took their dogs to Bulgaria. They did pet passport type vaccinations from here, rabies bloodtests were sent and confirmed from Scotland. When they got to Bulgaria they were let straight in no problems. Bulgaria being an EU country. It may just give you other options knowing this?

Hi Rocker, hows things? Will see you tomorrow am! It is terrible how some dogs get classed as dangerous dogs just because of what breed they are. It like racism in a way. There are no bad dogs without bad owners!! With the staffies i think it has been down to the numbers in the UK which have been bred. The figures for problem staffies are high, due to the numbers of them in recent years. My mum owned a staffie and i have three lots of friends with staffies none of them are dangerous dogs. Well trained and under control, its a shame some staffie owners have let the side down.

Contact Defra UK they will tell you the legal way . Animals from a non-EU country have to do 6 months quarantine when entering a EU country.Smuggling the animal in or trying to bypass the system (via France,Bulgaria etc ) could result in the animal been destroyed and the owner facing a hefty fine/imprisonment.

You should get in touch with DEFRA in the UK via their website. I once took 2 horses from Greece to UK over 10 years ago now, and they told me exactly what to do, and for all the countries I had to travel through also. They will tell you what you need to do for any animal/s.

Rocker, I worked at Ercan airport for 4 years and did ground operation for Turkish airlines for 2 and a half years and I have never come across such thing. We only check the health certificate, weight and size of the dog and make sure it's in a decent cage. We have never seperated them according to their breed and never heard such thing. A dog is a dog, a cat is a cat, that's how it was all done. Just making sure it has health certificates. I'm not good with what breed a dog is but we have allowed all sorts of dogs to fly no matter what breed they were, and did not pay attentions to their breed but only there health. Don't get me wrong I respect what you say and obviously you want to warn people but I have never heard, and we have never applied such thing so I'm suprised.

Yes, there is a way it can be done but you will have to wait until 6 months after the rabies injection has been given. I am making arrangements for my dogs to return to England next Spring. If you provide me with your email address I will advise you how the process works and who can help.

Shame on anyone who is evading the system and smuggeling their pets. In the UK we have rules for a reason. I don't think any off you have thought about this properly. If you get caught your animal will be destroyed and you will get a large fine, thats without the chance of being sent to prision. If you truely love your animals why would you take that risk? When you get back to the UK, if you get passed the system what are you going to do if your pet gets sick? If you take it to the vet and it has an illness which we don't currently have in the UK, your vet will inform DEFRA , which they have to do by law and you will be caught. If you love your pet, don't risk cheating the system.

Blade, this is not pet smuggling. We don't have rabies in Cyprus, and animals from the South can go to England with a pet passport. At one time they could also go to England on a pet passport from the North, and this has only changed recently. There is no reason other than political, why animals cannot go the the UK on a EU pet passport. Various countries in the EU still accept animals from the North, so it is just a matter of getting a pet passport and taking them to one of these countries (legally) and then going on to England. I don't know if you have ever been here,(it sounds as if you haven't) but if you have, you must realise how stupid the law is, when animals can very easily walk through to the south on their own, and hence be living in a legal country to go back to England.

stellasstar1 The UK changed the rules in 2004 for pets travelling into the UK from the TRNC with a TRNC pet passport. I assume the South made the UK change the law when they joined the EU (political) You are correct there has been no reported cases of rabies in the whole of Cyprus for over forty five years. Yes other EU countries do accept the TRNC pet passport including France. My advice is to research a EU country vet who will convert a TRNC pet passport into a bona fide EU passport. This is not pet smuggling.....Just finding a way around the system, like all the UK and EU farmers do when they move livestock around the EU. Blade being a retired farmer will understand what I am talking about? AP

Stella, Please don't make excuses for this behaviour. The UK rules state that any animal which has been outside of the pet passport area in a third country, such as here, in the previous six months, will have to be subjected to quarentine on entry to the UK. The TRNC may not have rabies now, in fact I am informed that it hasn't had rabies for over 100 years. The problem being is that people are just bringing dogs in from where ever, places like Russia, not via the correct route. This then puts everone here at risk. This week I went with a friend to quarentine. We watched a dog come in from Turkey, no pet passport but as the people clearly had friends in the right office, they just went home. No quarentine! That dog could have had rabies and nobody knew it. By all means take your dog to another EU country if they will let you in. Stay there until the six months has elapsed, but don't ruin my country.
