That's rather a big question apc...and it depends on exactly what you mean by a "solution".

On a similar note...do you think that most TC's want a solution ,or do they feel that their solution came in 1974?

If it means going into the EU then I hope there is never a settlement.

Free trade and peace to get on with their lives is not much to ask.

So given that, let us hope for a JUST settlement for both sides.

apc2010,

Expats do want a solution as the status quo cannot continue. Quite what that solution might be, who knows?

Any solution will have an effect on the whole population, North and South.

The TCs want prosperity and freedom of movement.

What do GCs expect out of the deal?

I think newlad comes closest to it and provides what will be the reality. Turkey will go on have a special relationship within the EU.

I'm with newlad on this issue and if the solutions was other than two separate states then I'd be less keen but I wouldn't lose sleep over any of the solutions I've seen suggested other than by GCs

Agree with Newlad with land in the north all TRNC land and vice-versa in the south.

As a side post, would you like then to be in EEC?

Think about the interest rates in the banks.

I would be happy to see any solution be that a unified Cyprus or a 2 state solution. If unified, those who lost homes/land be allowed to return to their previous homes or if not feasible then receive appropriate compensation. If a 2 state solution, then appropriate compensation would seem the only answer. I appreciate that the above would be almost impossible to broker but for me is the fairest solution for all concerned.

The 'problem' has gone on for too long and Cypriots deserve to be able to look to the future rather than having to dwell on the past.

Just my opinion of course

Agree with Pugwash, best hope is to become part of Turkey with Turkish administrators and legal system put in place .Get some sort of economy going with tourism linked to the Turkish Tourist board, and get away from property, which only enriches a few people.

As regards the EU, please dont put English anti european sentiment at odds with what might be best for the local population.

Last time I looked TRNC was the recipient of EU money not a giver.

There are only two games in town, become part of the EU or part of Turkey, and at the moment the EU is a non starter. NC cannot survive financially relative to the Greek part, as part of a two state system within a one Cyprus without handouts, and the EU might not be able to or willing to replace Turkeys handout with a similar one.

At least as a province of Turkey ,NC will be part of a vibrant economy,

a solution to the cyprob? Here's a newspaper report from the near future:

"EX-PATS AND ASIL NADIR FIRST TO SHARE CYPRUS SOLUTION BONANZA

The 2014 Cyprus Agreement, loosely based around the decade-old Annan proposals,

has seen TRNC ex-pat property values leap by fifty to seventy percent overnight

While the Compensation Board has yet to be created, it is expected to shell out

several thousand Euros to each claimant over a more than twenty-year period,

all to be funded by the three governments and the EU

Cutting the ribbon at the opening of Gecitkale International Airport, Mr Nadir said

"After leaving the London Court a free man last week, I am pleased the shackles

have finally been sundered from my beautiful homeland of North Cyprus"

Mr Nadir is 73"

Dream on Andre.

I would like to see a solution so that my many TC friends can have all the chances which we Brits got growing up and also those we get in old age.

We have a young friend who is a tallented violinist, but he is just not getting the schooling he needs here and is looking to go to the uk to study. This is the sort of thing which if there were a solution i believe would make things easier for people like him.

Am I right in saying that the Turkish constitution would not allow the TRNC to become a part of Turkey but only a recognised protectorate.

Before someone writes in. When I say recognised, I mean by the rest of the world.

Paul

Ref: Message 17

Cypriot Turks are getting on with their lives (since 74) and that is all they want to do. They do not dwell on the past, they leave that for the GCs to do (which they do admirably). I admire the Cypriot Turks for their resilience. Neither side wants to return to a pre 74 scenario because although GC's and CT's lived along side each other there certainly was no integration, two different religions, virtually no mixed marriages, separate coffee shops etc. It was never going to last. Now as far as Cypriot Turks are concerned there is peace and they can and have gotten on with their lives.
