It would seem to this lady that there are a lot of things going up steeply here, when we were up in Esentepe yesterday we noticed one of the restaurants as you go into the village advertising local brandy at 5ytl, now not sure if this is normal but we bought a 5 litre flagon in the supermarket as hubby likes a tipple more than occasionally and it only cost us 36ytl, even if they are giving a good measure surely that is still a lot of money

ld:

he bought five litres of brandy for fifteen quid?

that is more than a galllon and works out only

two pounds a standard bottle

but if you buy a drink with any meal anywhere

it is bound to be expensive

that is how most of them make their profit

they cannot manage on just the grub they sell

this is the case all over the world

two quid though is more less the uk price,

not much of a bargain

unless they serve you up a tumberfull

otherwise get so sozzled you don't care about the bill

Come on Andy --- if a bottle costs the equivqlent of £2 how can you justify charging £2 for one measure (albeit a generous measure) the profit margin is incalcuable . But then again the Effendi house is known for it's high charges .

Once this 'holiday' period is over ( august/September) the establishments that charge these exhorbitant rates for their services/goods will , I suspect, be void of all residential customers . At my "local" a (generous) brandy and coke costs 4YTL ----he too has electricitybills/gas/property tax etc etc ) but he also has CUSTOMERS

The principle is the same wherever you are in the world, the price of say a tot of brandy will seem rather high when compared to a bottle of the stuff.

In the scheme of things 5YTL in the TRNC is not excessive, in most places you will get twice as much as other places in the world.

Perhaps you ought to come into the real world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whenever I have been for a reasonable meal a glass of brandy on the house being offered has been the norm. Unfortunately it is the local brandy as opposed to a fine french cognac. I hope my polite refusal has not offended.

It always amazes me when people claim that an advertised price is a rip off. The price is the price and as long as it is advertised and you have a chice then the priice can be as high as you like. The advice don't go there is right if you don't feel you are getting value for money then don't. It's purely a matter of personal ecoomics and choice not some sort of punishment for the "rip off" business.

If its too high then people won't buy. The problem is that there is a reasonably short holiday season and its when the traders need to make their money. If they ramp their prices up too much they will put off their regular customers be they ex pat or natives.

Each trader, restaurant or bar has to make the decision. It should be based on detailed knowledge of margins and the market but often isn't and often the businesses fail.

For the record I have never put bae and food prices up for a season or event.

I don't mind paying 5ytl for a brandy as it is always a good measure probably about 3 times as you would get in the uk. What i do disagree on is i went to Jasmine court and was charged 20ytl for a brandy and 20ytl for 2 small efes i think thats daylight robbery.

lindoc, you cannot compare going to Jasmine Court with the rest of Hotels or restaurants and bars anymore than you can compare buying a bottle of Brandy in Asda and going to the Savoy Hotel in London and then moaning at the price you have been charged there.

Harold2555 is correct when he says that you just don't go there if you feel that you will pay more. To be quite frank the Jasmine Court is not interested in the likes of the ex-pats on a budget, its business is the Casino and mainland Turkish, Weddings and entertaining dignatories, government ministers and anyone with a fair few $ in their pockets.

must admit it gets on my pip as well when UK prices are continually compared to TRNC prices , why do it , there are residents in TRNC who have been on a fixed income for years , may have been a safe bet to reside in TRNC a few years ago , but with todays prices in the TRNC not so welcoming , we have now had second thoughts , we still love the place , the locals , weather etc but have decided to stay put , and have a rethink on our dream in the sun .

jakki,

Like all the posts here, only way you will know is to try yourself.

Only problem is everybar will make it differently. So try yourself, but do not get robbed and then post here. Personally there is nothing to dislike, but would you sit and drink all night is the real question??

Brand sour is a local cocktail made from brandy soda lemon cordial angostura bitters - taste varies on the expertise of the person making it.

Hi all - and thank you for your comments. Cyprusishome if I do get 'robbed' I wouldn't dream of posting on 'here'. We all get ripped off from time to time - I usually put it down to experience. However, if I think that by posting a message on this forum could help people then I will. Myservices you are right - one of the best vodka-martinis I had was made for me at the golf course.
