An interesting experiment albeit misleading in the extreme. As pointed out later in the thread, Texas is not the US and whilst some openly supported the actions of the storekeeper, many just didn't want to get involved in a dispute. How often do people see a dispute (of any kind) and walk past because they do not want to get involved ? As for how do Americans view Muslims, well over 5 million Muslims live in the US so they must be doing something right. The fact that a 'mosque' may be built just around the corner from 'Groung Zero' albeit with some opposition and that the threat of a 'burn the Koran' day has been met with widespread condemnation says more about how the US views Muslims than any TV expose. Could a similar experiment with roles reversed be conducted in downtown Kandahar or North Pakistan ? Not if the actors valued their lives it couldn't. Just my opinion Paul

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke The fact that the majority of customers did nothing says it all... Those who sided with the bigotry are probably beyond being salvation because they simply don't think enough. But they've probably never even been outside the state of Texas. Those who saw through the exchange to what it really was are the only hope for America. I just hope the bakery does not suffer from this experiment....

Groucho I agree but Burke's adage can be used worldwide and applied to any nationality. The fact that some 'westerners' have a fear or suspicion of Muslims demonstrates that radical Islam is succeeding to a degree - namely to strike fear and terror into the psyche of the 'infidels'. Terrorism definition - the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear Unfortunately, I am willing to bet that even now, on the Undergound in London, those of a 'middle eastern' appearance and carrying a backpack are still viewed suspiciously by some. After an event like the 7/7 bombings this is regrettably human nature. Paul

Basheer, Texas is most definatley not the place for such an experiment. I think you got a very false view. Try the same in middle England and I think that you would find more tolerant attitudes. I have to say the Burka does little to break down barriers Enjoy Bayram. wynyardman

"I have to say the Burka does little to break down barriers" US military might also does little.... If Islamic fundamentalist terrorists want to plant bombs I'm pretty sure they could disguise themselves as non-Muslim and wear US/UK clothing with no religious connotation... It's not rocket science. The very idea that clothing is what it is about totally misses the point. This was an experiment in prejudice and respect. She was only wearing a head scarf for heaven's sake. Apropos 'Burn a Koran Day' 'But organiser, Pastor Terry Jones said: "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam.".' That clear message would seem to be - 'yes we too are religious bigots'

I am american and my wife is Muslim. America has 300+ million citizens. At least some of them are going to be idiots. Thankfully, freedom of religion is guaranteed as one of the most basic rights in the US Constitution so what the bigots think doesn't really matter. Any attempted ban on headscarves or minarets would quickly be ruled unconstitutional. You could easily find similar anti-Muslim sentiment in Britain or any other European country, particularly those with large Muslim immigrant populations.

Groucho Apropos 'Burn a Koran Day' 'But organiser, Pastor Terry Jones said: "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam.".' That clear message would seem to be - 'yes we too are religious bigots' Agreed, however this is a small pentecostal church with a congregation of about 50 people - it hardly sums up the attitude of the US as a nation. Pastor Terry Jones is a self promoting bigot and the vast majority of the US and the rest of the western world recognise him for what he is. The Koran is promoted as a book of peace by the vast majority of Muslims, it is only the radical element that twist its' words to advocate 'Jihad' against the 'infidels' and unfortunately this only serves to feed bigots like Pastor Jones. As I said in an earlier post, would you be able to safely conduct the same experiment using westerners in the heartlands of the Taleban ? Regards Paul

zerochlor, obviously not a bright businessman. You've annoyed me. msg 13 "Now they want to have a burn a quran day. today in a little part of america" Who is "they" exactly? Jackasses from the sticks in America? Yes, we do have them as does every country. But that is not what you meant, right? When you typed "they" you meant Americans. Are you an impressionable prepubescent boy then? The fact that you wanted to expound on this thread and have it proliferate indicates something about you. I am moving next week into my new home finally. One of things on my to do list was to call you. Forget it. You won't be getting these U S dollars. Can't wait to see what masculine nonsense you will spew out now...tsk tsk...

Generalising about any race or culture is something the small minded, fearful stereotype, easy led person does, this is quite common and has to be accepted as if this type of loser was not around how would the rest of the intelligent population succeed in life?

The guy only has a congregation of 50 and we don't even know how many, if any, support his stupid and dangerous ideas. Listening to some of the Americans on BBC reports speaking it is evident that those who oppose the building of mosque near to Ground zero, seem blind to the fact that Muslims also lost loved ones in the atrocity.

I was touched by the video, it's good to know that the majority of people stood by the woman. What some people can't see is that every one is equal, made of bones and meat, and how they dress and what they believe shouldn't change this!! You don't have to like it, but you don't have to disrespect it either. Glynn do you measure human intelligence by their religion or nationality? By the way you said muslims, but christianity and Islam isn't much different I believe, one calls it Allah the other calls it God, one calls it Kuran the other calls it Bible, one calls it church the other calls it mosque!!! They all believe in the same thing but call it different names and obey it differently.

| You know what. I rather suspected you believed in nothing. Me being a Jackass (or not) is not really the question is it? We should dwell a little more on your inadequateness and what we can do to help. You should never feel like a second class person just because you are not that bright. You will have other attributes. | Oh Glenn, What kind of question is that? What are your core beliefs – could you please explain exactly what that means? Obviously, by your posts – you are a prejudiced self-riotous condescending (and likely impotent) chauvinistic wannabe intellectual failure. Look we all know you wet your bed and sucked your thumb and never really got over the trauma of getting your ass kicked in school. Now you are demonstrating your perceived superior intellect by acting like a prick on every forum possible on this board. I understand you have unresolved issues....your dad beat you , your wife left you, and you have no real relationship with your kids. Poor Glynn...denial is not going to help you deal with any of these issues or your impotence. So while you lash out at Muslims and the evil dimwitted Americans – we all know that you really just hate yourself. We all recognize that you being such an obnoxious twat is really a cry for help. |

I will be happy to meet you anytime so that we can discuss my lack of intelligence and your need to overcompensate for your inadequacies. When the moderators shut this post down because they say it is irrelevant or off topic or whatever other excuse they give...please know that the real reason is they don't want to say what everyone is thinking which is as another member so eloquently stated, YOU ARE A JACKASS. |
