In view of the current electricity hikes , what energy saving tips can we pass on to one another , mine would be to install mossie screens you then can leave windows open day/night reducing the use of aircon , any more ?

Use a fan on high speed at night instead of airconditioning to keep you cool and discourage mosquitoes. So far havent paid more than 50 YTL per month (the last bill). leave windows open most of the time when there is a breeze. Also use fluorescent lights instead of normal bulbs most of the time and don't use electric toasters kettles etc use the gas stove top instead.

Hi all,

When cooking I always use a set of steamers, then when cooking the vegetables you only need one electric or gas ring, saving fuel. Also only fill the kettle with as much water as you need.

The advice given in UK after announcing the last increase in gas and electricity charges was make sure Freezer is completely full otherwise your freezing air. Make sure that your freezer or fridge is not next to a cooker. Turn off TV from plug point, leaving TV on standby is supposed to be quite expensive. With a computer he said two of the items that take up most electricity is the monitor and Router and should be switched off.

Those of you that have said your cooking indoors can't you change to cooking outdoors on a BBQ or is it swings and roundabouts with cost of coal etc.?

Cooking outdoors is expensive, about 5ytl for charcoal.

Also, acording to some research BBQ food is carconogenic. Plus smoke pollution, chance of starting brush fires etc

A good place to save energy is to switch off or remove bulbs from those many out door lights people seem to love here. Some houses are lit up like Christmas trees.

Don't run your a/c at less than 25/26C in summer. Use a fan AS WELL as a/c to get extra evaporative cooling.

if you must leave a freezer on while away, fill black sacks with cut green vegetation (damp with water), and seal the bags, pack them in the freezer to fill any empty spaces

Go round to a friends house for a chat and then pretend to become ill and stay with your friends for a few days. Repeat this with all your friends.....

Fill spaces in your freezer and fridge with 500ml bottles of water. That way you displace air which changes everytime you open the door. Also during outages, your fridge/freezer will stay colder for longer.

Message 12 i think that is a brilliant idea , you could re use the water when showering , mark the bottles pop in the freezer than re cycle watering the plants , until you have next shower , so on you go again , just brilliant idea , will def try it out .

Are solar panels out of the question? There are really expensive in UK but the price would come down if they were compulsory on all new builds and then we could tell the electricity companies where to shove their electricity.I was walking on the canal this morning and was talking to a barge owner. He had a solar panel installed and this is his only means of electricity in the summer months. His panel has been erected so that it can follow the sun for most impact. It runs lights,tv,washing machine, not forgetting the good old laptop. Is thermal clothing expensive to buy in NC? I could start a knitting club and export bobble hats, socks and gloves any offers?

I'm not sure about putting bottled water in your freezer!!

Glass ones would shatter!

Plastic ones will also expand when frozen and split open. Trust me! I've got teenagers, I know! ;-(

You would be safer off by using pre-frozen ice cubes in plastic bags.

Or tupperware boxes with lids on work just as well apparently. Or plastic bags stuffed with newspaper.

No1 Doyen, all our plants have been having soapy washing-up water and shower water for months, they don't mind a bit. Had some very good tomatoes this year, fed on washing-up water.

Sorry, meant to say, we did a little test a couple of years back, turning off everything that was on stand-by and all the appliances and pumps with fuse switches. Took a meter reading before and after and there was a pretty big reduction, definitely worth doing.

Newspapers in bags will displace the air but they don't absorb any heat during outages as they are a very poor conductor in fact paper is an insulator. Water is a very good conductor and absorbs a tremendous amount of latent heat when turning from ice to water.

We moved into our present house in 2003 -a couple of months ago we decided that we really should take more care about electric and gas consumption. When you think about it that electrical items had been left on stand-by for over five years it's really a wake up call.

One of the biggest electric users is the pool pump. Why have it on for so many hours (easier for the pool cleaners )? Certainly doesnt need to be on at night. Pumps that my friends have are running 10 to 12 hrs a day thats crazy, but funny how they all use the same pool company. Some holiday villas which are only using electric for the pool have electric bills of 60 ytl + pm.

Put air conditioner on in bedroom , take a sleeping pill, wait 5 minutes, turn of air conditioner and sleep through the night without any problem.

My plants have thrived from soapy water just as long as you don't have oil, grease , detergents in the water.
