And Greece - who've never done anything wrong in relation to Cyprus are such an honest broker in world politics!

Oh, hold on a minute they inspired the Military coup in Cyprus.....

Paul.

I am not sure if I am allowed an opinion.

It seems to me The TRNC (T meaning Turkey) have gone along with the reunification talks for world consumption. I think the decision has been made for 2 seperate states , once the talks break down. A Governer from Turkey into The TRNC offers much promise in straightening out The TRNC Government and legal system.

I feel that Turkey have an agreed deal with The EU. (under the table at this stage) for International recognition once the reunification talks fail. The IPC is already acknowledged as the appropriate route to settle the property issues.

An agreed level of Turkish troops will remain in The TRNC, but much reduced. The water pipeline and direct flights will follow

Just my view, thats all,

Until it's clear the south can be trusted along with mainland Greece I would rather have the troops...

Yeah, I know "the south can be trusted along with mainland Greece" Like that's ever going to happen...

Wyn. I'd like to think your prophecy will come true. We live in hope.

I personally think that 35,000 troops stationed in an area the size of the TRNC is excesive. It wouldn't be unsreasonable for Turkey to start a phased withdrawal of troops and would help the political situation immensly

an interesting question:

if the two parts of cyprus cut a deal, the eu automatically allows turkey to join?

I wouldn't think so at all for other more crucial factors I have referred to for years

but won't turkey take the bait and try to get into the eu anyway by pulling out of cyprus

as bankrupt greece requires? not a shred of evidence here, just dreams

right, turkey mounts a charm offensive and withdraws half its garrison as a gesture:

showing weakness in a mid-east context, encouraging the gc's to have a "pop"? no!

yeah well the talks might succeed 'cos the status quo just cannot continue

it very much depends what you mean by "succeed" since it is physically impossible

to square each side's demands with t'other, trnc security with clawing back the north

ah, but the politicians will come out of it well:

not cristofias perhaps, having pulled the plug in 2004 yet not "in kyrenia by xmas"

partners ditsey 'n dopy will blame him for any abstract "concessions" made

I just hope all the positive talk above is prophetic and not pathetic! We need something good to happen, and also need to trust that withdrawal of troops will NOT make us vulnerable. But then there are just two things we lesser mortals have - hope and trust!

trust?

greek cyprus already fields sa-8 anti-aircraft missiles and shopping for sa-10

they wanted to install the fearsome s-300 ten years ago but were warned off

...and they are still blockading the north

yes if they recognise the trnc I'm sure turkey's garrison will be cut to the bone

any unilateral withdrawl of troops IMHO will make north cyprus vulnerable
