Was working fine, switched it off when we went out. Turned it on when we came back in and....nothing. Changed the fuse, tried another socket. Am I expecting too much, we paid about 120tl for it. Is it worth having it looked at?

just get a new one, probably cost more to get it repaired, unless your mechanically minded and can attempt to repair the motor yourself.

If you can try bypassing the switch to see if it is that but only if you are comfortable with electrics if not, then I think LM's advice is a good one but surely we are heading for winter so may be it can wait a bit till next may. It may actually start working again then. Especially if it gets kicked around a bit. Thats how we used to get the transistor radios to work in the 70s when they stopped working and it worked every time.

Vidal msg8, best not to attempt it yourself. You don't want to accidentally electrocute yourself I bought an 'air cooler' a few weeks ago, it had a very suspect plug on it. I got a shock. Good job I haven't got a pacemaker or anything. I was fine just came out with a few profanities ;-)

Vidal Karakum Lemar are flogging upright fans for 45TL, if Yorgo can't fix it then might be worth paying them a visit. Paul

As an interim measure salvage the fan blade and fit it to the chuck of your electric drill. Impulse spending of 45 TL for another fan should be given lengthy consideration as it equates to approx 20 cans of EFES

Even a fan should first be plugged into an RCD - residual current device - they're bloody expensive in Cyprus - get a cobber coming out from UK to order you a coupla three from Maplin's @ £6.95 ea. and bring them for you! Even switching something on can cause it to 'blow' [burn out] - there doesn't even need to be a voltage surge.

Take the cover off, and with the power on, try manually rotating the blades - it sometimes takes a few good turns. If this works, turn off the power and take the cover off. Drop some oil down on the spindle, and then repeat the operation. I have made my fans last twice as long by doing this.

Sorry. If this works, turn off the power and take the cover off - that's the smaller plastic cover at the back.
