Just wonedered which countries in the world can somebody plan to live in other than European contries and Cyprus? Any suggestions or has anyone lived in far away destinations in the past, who like to share information about the country. I can search through the internet, but I wan't to hear from people that have experienced living abroad. I mostly want to know about hot countries with fab beaches that can offer a good living too, is there one?

Having lived in Africa, Australia, the Far East and the UK I can honestly say that I have never felt safer than I do here.

I often try to imagine that I was rich enough to live anywhere I wanted but on studying an Atlas or Google Earth, sadly, I find it difficult to come up with a single location which is not affected or likely to be affected by pollution, famine, drought, war, racial intolerance etc etc. Having travelled extensively and lived in many countries I found nothing better than Cyprus but that too is eroding day by day. I was very impressed by a short visit to the beautiful Azores which until very recently was almost unkown to tourism. Exploring the facts is thoughly enjoyable. As it is Portugese presumably residence by EU members is possible but it would of course involve a lot of study of property prices, health facilities etc. Certainly one of the least polluted and trouble free places on earth and great for a holiday or study to let your imagination run wild.

I agree with you 100% deputydawg, nearly every where in the world is affected negatively by people and technology, or is going bad day by day, unfortunately, it is upsetting to know that we can't stop these from happening. I will keep Portugal in mind;) I've never heard of Azures though, I will search that. Where is that exactly?

The Azores are a group of Islands in the Atlantic reached by sea or air from Lisbon in Portugal. It is somewhat like New Zealand having locations with varied climates and Terrain eg High Mountains, many green plains and valleys, superb sea water with schools of resident Whales, parts hot climate, parts cold, and everything in between. Have just looked at some real estate on www and prices very competitive. Suggest you go on line and see all the wonderful pictures and views. At the end of the day because of it's location it may not be the place for you but I honestly believe you would enjoy learning about it and better still would love to visit it.

I'm looking through the pics now and it looks beautiful and calm. just somewhere to go and have peace and quite. All nature. May be not to live as you said because of the location but it's definitely worth a visit. I'm always interested in learning about countries and geography..so it would not be a problem for me to learn anything about any place in the world.

There is one place I can think of ,I haven't been there,I know the names of people that have, for me it would be cost prohibitive, and finding a flight is difficult try the "Sea of Tranquillity"

If you are considering the Azores then why not Madeira. It is also Portugese (therefore EU) but with quite a few resident Brits as a lot of Brit families moved there during WW2 and never left. It is noted by the WHO as the 2nd best climate in the world - semi-tropical and totally pollution free.

I have recently been to Thailand and the Philippines and I would recommend neither.

Thailand is great but foreigners are not permitted to own property or cars and rental/lease payments have a high tax added which makes life expensive and insecure.

The Philippines is so crime ridden I never felt comfortable - even the local shops and petrol stations have armed guards. When they came to fill the ATM next to my hotel (which had 2 armed guards permanently at the front door), there were 6 security guards - 4 with shotguns and 2 with machine pistols. The only advantage is that because each major island has a unique language that they have adopted English (or rather American) as their standard.

The Maldives are OK but the problem is that each hotel is on its own island and there is nowhere else to go - if you don't like it you are stuffed. Nobody stays on the main island (Male) because it is very devout Muslim.

Far far better are the Seychelles. The main island (Mahe) is beautiful with a good choice of hotels, restaurants and entertainment. But it is the culture of holidays there to island hop, spending a couple of days on each. The nearer ones (e.g. La Digue, Praslin, Silhouette) are all easily reached by schooner which operate like inter-island buses. Some further out (noticeably Bird Island) are a short hop by small plane. The cooking everywhere is Creole style and fantastic and the wildlife and nature are stunning. But as to living there, I never looked into it.

All those people who think N Cyprus is expensive do not go to either the Maldives of the Seychelles you will fall over backwards at the prices in comparison. Thailand i found great particually in Koi Samui, not dangerous and cheap. I for your infomation live in Qatar (Muslim) and feel very safe

The other thing that shocked me about the Philippines is the poverty - there are shanty towns everywhere and because it is a supremely Catholic country the birth rate is very high. I spent days touring round and never saw a single house I would like to buy because anything approaching nice was surrounded by minimum 10ft high walls topped with razor wire.

That said I was mainly in cities - Manila, Cebu and Bacalod. Maybe it's better out in the countryside or on the outlying islands - but I doubt it.

To me anywhere in the Caribbean or South America is unsafe and the Humidity is appalling. Ducking from 150 mph flying coconuts in a Hurricane is not my idea of Utopia. Madiera and the Azores are the only places I would contemplate.

No 1 Doyen. Not well funny when they hit. Why do you think the Wildebeest thinks I have been "disturbed" since. My cricket team mates had little sympathy and moved me from my regular fielding spot of deep fine leg to Gulley then p....d themselves with laughter watching my antics of covering the groin area every time the ball flew my way off the meat of the bat ! Also had to open the batting against the new ball fast bowlers. Permanently traumatised

I went to the Cook Islands 10 years ago. Rarotonga would be a good place...if they'd let you in!

Go on holiday and live there. However there are some restrictions on becoming resident. Non-Cook Islanders can only buy property on 56 year leases...these are renewable...err how long do you have left to live!!

Rarotonga - you also have Stanley Island, Palmer Island, and the tiny island of *Aitutaki - I once dated THE most beautiful Polynesian maiden ['wahini' is the Maori word for 'maiden'] from *there; she went on to become a photo model in UK. Picking me, though, I always wondered whether she needed a trip to 'SpecSavers'!!!

High River Alberta Calgary Canada I would move there but too far from my children, and Mr Spider hates the snow, they are equipped to deal with the winter months, take a look, not sure if I could cope with too many cowboys about me though but saying that i live here )

Oh spider I prefer hot countries,Canada I hear it's really nice but too cold, I may think it for holiday one day though. Tenakoutou, I liked Aitutaki and "I always wondered whether she needed a trip to 'SpecSavers'!!!" I found that funny . jimchris09, 56 years is a good period, maybe not in property wise as it sounds a bit awkward but if there is a chance to renew then there is no problem I'm thinking.
