I was going off to sleep on a barrack room bed in Gibraltar awaiting the arrival of the Company Sergeant Major to take me to his quarter to babysit his children. He was late arriving but I soon found out why. The Company Storeman, not the sharpest knife in his store, shook me and asked "Does assassinated mean dead"?. Drowsily, I replied "I think very much so as you will be if you do not p..s off" He then stunned me totally by shouting "in that case President Kennedy is dead". Doubt I will ever forget 1963 !
