Please - no animal rights activists!

Now that Ramadan is over, it is customary for muslims to arrange a Kurban (an animal sacrifice) to give charity to poorer people. Back in the UK you could buy an animal (say sheep) and pay someone to slaughter it (halal style) and distribute it to the community. It's also supposed to help with favour from God, if you want help with a problem, if there's bad luck following you around for example. It was about £60 last time hubby did it.

Does anyone know if there is anyone who can arrange this and what it costs. Got a price today from an Imam who said to expect 500 lira for the whole service. I'm not sure what that entails (seemed to suggest you go to a particular place on a particular day for some sort of 'service' or ritual to be performed).

I'm not bothered about all the frills.

Is anyone familiar with this and know anything about how it can be arranged and costs involved?

Thanks.

There is a shepherd by the firemen's Fez in Çatalköy.His name is İbrahim.Good man.Ask to the local coffee shops in the village.

Or there is aman who comes to lambousa on saturdays. He tows the broken cars .He provides, too.

Does all for you but I suggest you to give the meat people yourself. The second person can deliver to the right people.

Depending on the weight it varies between 300-500 tl.

60 pounds sounds about right to me. The Imam is committing a sin for asking to be paid for his services. He should accept voluntary donations but should be pricing the job.

Go to a village, speak to the local butcher and get the local imam to do the necessary. It should not come to more than 60/70 pounds. It does depend of the price of lamb but 500 tl is daylight robbery.

400-500 tl is about right, Kurban bayram is in November normally 40 days after the end of Ramadan.

There is a price for others and there is price for locals. Get a local front it , see what it comes to. All outsiders pay treble for the same thing.

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments.

Actually, we've been told there's evil eyes haunting us at the moment and it was recommended we do a sacrifice, that's why we're looking to do it now.

Good idea to get a local to make the enquiries for us, I'll do that.

By a butcher?

What a nonsense... how does somebody come to the conclusion that their place in life is to tell you this?

I suggest you spend your money on something more productive. Killing an animal to assuage your bad fortune is and never was anything other than total rubbish.... otherwise Buddhists would be the most unlucky people on Earth...

I've got some snake oil if anyone wants to buy it? Only 4,000TL an ounce, guaranteed to bring good luck. In this case good luck is 'not having to worry about how to spend 4,000TL that's been burning a hole in your pocket.'

Go on, you know you are having a run of bad luck....

It's called 'life'.

Animal sacrifices pre-date Islam of course and this would appear to be a pagan ritual assimilated into the religion to prevent anyone saying the religion causes bad-luck by denying practitioners the right to carry out this ritual.

We have many examples of the assimilation of pagan rituals into Christianity.

I'd be interested to read where in the Koran the slaughter of animals is required to bring good luck. I can understand the need to share food - don't get me wrong - I just wonder if this sacrifice is like the pagan rituals now enshrined in the Christian Faith - like Harvest Festival etc.

Think Karma...how can killing a living being bring you good luck, in this life or the next, try something else, get yourself a lucky eye and try a bit of feng shui....let the lamb live another day.

WHAT IS KURBAN?

Kurban dates back to Prophet Abraham.

Kurbanfocuses on Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his promised son Ishmael on God's command, as a test of Abraham's faith. God spared his son's life and substituted a fit sheep from heavens for his son. On Eid ul-Adha, Muslims sacrifice a domestic animal, as a symbol of Abraham's sacrifice, and divide the meat among the poor and destitute.

PIPPIE, rather then Kurban, why not spend the same amount of money on clothes or toys etc... and give them out to the local charities, kids charities etc, if thats what you'd like to do. Then you can do a kurban on the given date.

Animal sacrifices for food I understand, animal sacrifices to satisfy a God I don't. I don't understand the idea that God would test your faith... God knows everything, so God knows how strong your belief is without tests.

Groucho, as far as aware the sacrifice is a means of a charitable act to help the poor.

Yes that a practical solution to meat being available - you kill a lamb - you can't eat it all at once - you had no way of keeping it from spoiling so you give portions away.

As you say "Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his promised son Ishmael on God's command, as a test of Abraham's faith."

The sacrifice is meant to relate to God testing man's faith - my point remains unanswered... why? Given that God knows everything and therefore how strong your belief is.....

Pipie/Msg 1:

'Klefticco' [Greek translation: 'stolen'] is the traditional Cypriot way, and would be much cheaper for you!

Stick with that and you'll be in good company with the banks, 'lawyers', land owners, builders, estate agents and every other Cyp. who is incapabable of doing a straight deal with expats/foreigners, because if they did/do, they would 'lose face' in the coffee shop - and that would never do!
