If it's Hotmail, try changing your password

My computer sent out disgusting emails last week from my hotmail account. I was logged out of hotmail at the time. My brother suggested a trojan sweep.

I think you have a virus that sends out emails to everyone in your address book. I meant to mention it on Tuesday when you were over as I had already received one then, but I have just had another and have sent it back to you to have a look at.

Mike: "The most common blunder people make when the topic of a computer virus arises is to refer to a worm or Trojan horse as a virus. While the words Trojan, worm and virus are often used interchangeably, they are not exactly the same. Viruses, worms and Trojan Horses are all malicious programs that can cause damage to your computer, but there are differences among the three, and knowing those differences can help you to better protect your computer from their often damaging effects."

A very good explanation here: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2004/virus.asp

And all about this kind of malware: http://is.gd/fcXVa

To remove a malware from your computer you should use "malware" removers. There are some instructions here [ http://www.tech-faq.com/how-to-remove-a-trojan-adclicker.html ] and [ http://hubpages.com/hub/Remove-Trojan-Virus-for-Free ] that might be helpful.

Also: do a Google search for "remove worms". There's help on the Net!

I was having trouble with my PC the other day, so I rang the Microsoft help desk. They put me on to some geek. The first thing he asked was "Do you have a Windows CD?". I told him I'd never bloody heard of them, but that I did have The Best Of The Doors.

re msg 1

Mike - this seems to be reaching epidemic proportions as I've had such emails from my M-i-L ( in Russia) and several ppl on this board who have hotmail / yahoo accounts.

They must have some sort of mailware on their computers as the mails are going to folks in their address books.

Folks affected should visit

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

download housecall7.1 ( most folks need the 32 bit version) and it will scan your pc and TELL you what it finds..

It might be a good idea for a sticky for this for a while

RE msg 9, No1Doyen: (...) "Do you have a Windows CD?" (...)

=> You either lost that CD after you bought your computer or you never had one - because your Windows version is illegal...

More possibilities: you bought your computer second hand and the vendor didn't give you the CD (or he/she didn't have one, because etc...

We had the same problem when we ordered something on line from a medical company and I keep getting mail from a friend who also ordered well over a year ago. At least I know the genuine ones from her as they have a subject matter and the hacked ones do not so just blacklist them and they go straight into trash and as yet, after well over 50 they do not seem to be coming into my in box. But that does not help you if you have been hacked - computer wizard will sort it for you.

Yes and i also think its nothing to do with a hacker or a cracker or anyone of sorts. It might be a virus or as such, because there are atleast a thousand malicious software out there who do the same approx. Plus they are not just limited to Pc's OS, but mobiles and cell phones and mp3/mp4 players like ipod and as such.

Even if u use the strongest AV, it wont be of help. There might be a dozen anomalies involved which could render the AV nonexistant, like the pages you browse, emails where and which you click, and so on.
