Does anyone out there know why olive harvesting in TRNC is only allowed from a certain date, set by the Government?

Found an article in Cyprus Today (dated 8th September) which states:-

The official harvest of Gemlik olives in the Girne area will start on September 13 and that of local olives on September 27th.

A statement released by the Girne District Office warned that legal action would be taken against anybody who picked olives before these dates.

If the olive trees are in your own gardens and no chance of anyone stealing them then leave them on for as long as possible,at least wait for a rain for better reasults .Trust me,I'm a doctor.

I'll try again: Yorgozlu, the dates are known. Published in "Cyprus Today". But WHY are these dates set by the TRNC Government?!

"But WHY are these dates set by the TRNC Government"...............

.....because..........if not date set up by government people (farmers) would pick them before they are ready............and because..........not very good harvest they'd be on the governments door claiming.....same goes for the carob season as well.If picked after set date and under achieved they'd be entitled for a claim.

I hope you can now sleep with rested mind tonight Hans.

Also gives you a date when the press will be open - maybe! The man is right - leave them as long as you can and hope for the first rain, they are much better a couple of days afterwards. Not sure why because even if you pour water into the olive trees this time of year it will not produce much difference - but 20 mins of rain is like heaven!

You can - if you don't get caught - pick a couple of jars full now for cracking, after a week they are just grand but a bit of an aquired taste.
