I read that there is no "spell Check" facility on the Board and some become very aggravated by reading poor spelling. As I grow older my ability to spell and proof read erodes. It may be that somebody knows how to utilize a spell check in conjunction with posting and if that is so I for one would be grateful to know how. If it is not possible it may be that a method I employ will be helpful to some. I have in "favourites" One Look Dictionary and when I have finished typing a draft I click on this if I recognise any of my spelling as suspect, then click back to the draft and make the necessary amendment before clicking "post". It is not foolproof (or certainly not for this old fool) but I just thought to mention it in case it may be helpful to those who have no better way. Have not been "slaughtered" by Dutch Crusader yet

Britvic and Chegwin. Thanks for the tips. Most go bonkers when reading my name. The Wildebeest (bless her) and the family call me Mr Bean and are convinced that Rowan Atkinson stole my scripts so I need all the help I can get.

Spell checkers don't tell you where to put commas and full stops though, I read a post on here the other day and didn't take a breath all the way through!

Spelling mistakes are fine as long as you can get the gist of the post.

I have not used the forum too often recently and this type of post is just one of the reasons why, who cares about the spelling or grammar used in a post?

It is a forum a place for people to cummunicate and hopefully have a little fun too.

I suppose a word like 'cumminicate' emphasises how useful correct spelling can be to avoid misunderstandings!

lets be honest many people who post on this forum cannot spell very well anyway..also as we age we use the written form of communication even less so emails and forum comments, whilst written, are often puncuated with errors. Those who spell ok in written form may be like me with a keyboard and mobile phone make silly mistakes and without an edit facility we can still communicate. It is said that the human brain can interprate mispellings and read the communication any way as lnog as the frist and lsat ltteres are in the rghit palce. I tihnk taht if we tierd to cmmiocateun in tihs mnaner prhepas we wulod sepll mroe aurccetly

deputydawg,

UTILIZE is spelt UTILISE. The majority of people on this board are British not American. Of course if you are American then I apologise, or should that be apologiZe to our American cousins.

Generally though it don't matter one iota if you can spell and use grammar correctly as long as you get your message over. English is one of the few languages where spelling and grammar can be poor and still be understood by those who are reading or listening to it.

Oh not this old chestnut again - does it really matter it is a forum like we all have time to write in word and then copy past etc etc so what some people make typos some cannot spell in the big scheme of things does it matter ........... hmm let me think about that for a second ermmm no

type 'Google Chrome' in your search engine and it will give the site to download this brilliant replacement for Internet Explorer (IE)... run the installation which will give you the option to copy over your favourites from IE.

It has features all the others are desperate to copy...

Totally agree with Groucho about Google Chrome. It's brilliant for so many things - not just checking spelling. I sometimes wonder what we did without it - you can look just about anything up on it.

See you soon.

Hehe, Spider, F5 refreshes the page but look what happens when you press CTRL and + at the same time.........Makes the text bigger for those that have to wear reading glasses (by the way CTRL and - puts it back)

I will definitely (always spell that wrong without spell checker) sort your computer out.

We will never meet the majority of contributors to this board and therefore the only way we can judge people is by what and how they write.

If you write like a moron, don't be surprised if people assume you are one!

Just a thought!

Glynn the best of us make typos from time to time... we learn to live with it. however the standard of some of the English is down to it being a second language for some so please don't jump to too many hasty conclusions.

There are a few cardinal sins (how's that for topical?) that do grate whenever they are occasioned:-

Definately instead of definitely

Your instead of you're and vice versa

There instead of their and vice versa

Advice instead of advise and vice versa

Live instead of life and vice versa

Gavin

No hasty conclusions, the majority have English as a first language and are embarrassing.

Even you drive me mad, you may have an adequate grasp of the language but can't help using it every 2 minutes. Is your life so empty that you need to live it on here?

Give us all a break a post somewhere else for a while (PRETTY PLEASE).

My original post did not intend to resurrect a "done to death" debate between those who think that good grammar and spelling is the be all of life nor those with equally extreme views that it is not worth a rat's arse. I sought on behalf of the moderate people, who through no fault of their own, like me, were not blessed with an exceptional education, but like to use all aspects of life as a learning curve, and would be grateful for any advice which was helpful to them. I am grateful, and I suspect many more are also grateful , to those who have taken the trouble to offer some helpful tips. However, I am saddened that it is now obvious that I did not make myself clear enough to those who have used the initial post to have a "pop" at those who do not yield to their views. Lets all keep smiling together !

I agree - keep smiling. But I think those who recognise that they didn't get quite as far academically as others just have to realise that spell checks do not overcome grammar, and if anyone is feeling REALLY badly about their inability to conform to the standards others expect of them, then I suggest a good course of action.

Get the clever ones to help you improve. Let them give up criticising and help instead.

Ain't that a better solution. I was fortunate to get an education late in life but realise that not everyone can avail themselvesof that - but here is a golden opportunity for the criticisers to show love and help everyone to learn English and to learn to smile!

At this rate we will all end up doing text speak, it's just another nail in the the coffin of our standards no wonder the UK is going downhill so fast it's the attitude of some members that pull down all of our standards

I for one would welcome a spell checker as I always use it when sending emails
