I read somewhere it was something to do with 'security'!

I certainly would not pay 25 quid to hear an old man rambling on about peace in the world. He needs to sort his own house out first!

I would say that is because the British Gov. is picking up the Bill, est. at £4million. Why is he being granted "STATE" visit status ?? I though that was onl for heads od state or has the Vatican suddenly become a state?????

No it hasn't, it's been a State for Centuries on and off with it's final status being established in 1929.

I think that he, along with all his priests should be castrated and as I have already said I am sickened to see fathers holding their children up to this man to be blessed, the only blessing I would give my children is to keep them safe and away from men like him and the church.

You talk as if the Catholic Church was the only religion that has had problems with child molestation.

Dont you read the papers? Or do you only read what you want to hear? Talk about bigoted.

What about all the child molesters in the good old C of E for starters?

People want to see the Pope, ok let them. If they pay £25 then they must think it's worth it.

Personally I wouldn't cross the road to do so, not because I hate him or any other such reason but because I don't feel he is relevant to me, nor do I feel any particular admiration for him.

However because others do, I will not condemn then either.

A word for Dee, your hyperbole defeats your purpose, masking what could be valid points by reducing your arguements to the absurd. There may well be good reasons for keeping children from priests, their belief in original sin as a doctrine being one that I can think of, but realistically you don't believe that every priest and the Pope are child abusers do you?

Harold 2555 Msg20.

She is probably so stupid and bigoted that yes, she probably does believe that.

Vigilante mentality! Castrate first, ask questions later.

She mentions about not wanting her children anywhere near a member of the church, well,

I'm a member of a church, a lay member, and to be honest if her children are as dirty and nasty as her mind is I would not want them anywhere near me either!

If it were Mother Teresa she would have said'Give the money to the poor' (as she did when a dinner was offered in her honour), and so if the £25 a go was to help the poor, then fine, but if not, it is all out of context of the lifestyle of the man who started C|hristianity. He went walkabouts (no Popemobile); relied on the hospitality of others; helped all he could for free; asked for nothing in return, ....... and look what they did to him. (crucifixion). How times have changed truth.

As to religions hurting children, in most religions at various stages of history great harm has been done. Sacrificing infants to appease blood thirsty gods; sexual induction in some Hindu understandings of young girls when they started to menstruate; strange rituals for boys, and, and and........ So what does mankind learn.

Answer - not a lot! But you can't lay it all at the feet of the Pope - it is all those under him that have got their wires crossed.

£25 quid to see the Pope, you could see a whole HOST of bands at the ampitheatre on sat. 25th of Sept for only 20 lira, and support a worthwhile cause.

I dont think the popes that good ,is songs are always a bit slow and in Latin.

How many clever people picked up on the word HOST.

"But you can't lay it all at the feet of the Pope - it is all those under him that have got their wires crossed."

The buck always stops at the top of any organisation... ultimately it's his responsibility... just like Tony Hayward CEO of BP.... he didn't cause the oil spill but he still had to fall on his own sword. His responsibility.

The cover up is definitely partly his responsibility - he was in charge in the section of the Vatican whose job was deciding what to do about priests caught with their hands on young innocents... and the decision - err, cover it up, make it go away, let the priest continue.

Sorry not good enough... by anybody's standards I would have hoped, Catholic or not.

Sorry Groucho, I would love to agree, but it is very commonly held view that the people who make the decisions FOR the pOPE ARE probably Mafia. Read the book 'Pope for 28 days' or whatever it was called. That was a Pope who was going to reform the churc\h and put it right. He suddenly died of a heart attack when only days before he had been declared as 100% fit and nothing amiss with his heart.

So, again I reckon that the Pope is just a figurehead and a bit of a puppet on a string. Still not worth paying £25 though, oh, and I am NOT a Roman Catholic.

Dusterbruce, I am neither bigoted or stupid and if you read my post(s) properly you would understand what I said, clearly it is you who are stupid!!

Also your remark about 'my children' gives me great cause for concern and I wouldn't let you near any child.

Maz,

I'm not talking really about Ratzinger as Pope per se but in his former position as Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith...

The Congregation is best known for its authority over the teaching of Church doctrine, but it also has jurisdiction over other matters, including cases involving the seal of the confessional, clerical sexual misconduct and other matters, in its function as what amounts to a court.

In his capacity as Prefect, Ratzinger's 2001 letter De delictis gravioribus which clarified the confidentiality of internal Church investigations, as defined in the 1962 document Crimen Sollicitationis, into accusations made against priests of certain crimes, including sexual abuse, became a target of controversy during the sex abuse scandal...

So you see he is directly involved in what has gone wrong in the reporting and discipline of errant priests.

I'd pay £25 to see the Pope on Question Time....

Or even better being grilled by Jezza Paxman....

Answer the question... did you or did you not sweep the dirt under the carpet?

You are asking the wrong question...

Please answer the question... did you or did you not sweep the dirt under the carpet?

I don't wish to answer that question... why don't you ask me if I'm infallible?

Please answer the question... did you or did you not sweep the dirt under the carpet?

I'm not going to dignify that question with an answer.

Please answer the question you slimy bugger... did you or did you not sweep the dirt under the carpet?

Takes off microphone and storms off....

Oh well there we have it... he doesn't want to answer the question.

There are obviously some real experts with educated opinions on this matter. However non seem to have appeared on this thread, apart from Groucho's cut and paste from Wicked pedio.

Dee is it not a bit early to be in that state (Hic!!). I thought you could hold it better than that, conidering the amount and frequancy at which you can put it away. From our knowledge of you, your biggest problem is two hands but only one mouth. Despite it being a big one.

Pikey I'm sure sends his best.

Just an observation.

There are 3 members of this board contributing to this thread with portrait pictures that involve family (children) photos. Reflect please on the appropriate nature of your (and that means all of you) comments and the associated remarks.

Was the Pope handing out free cans of *'PriestOff' to his flock?

If I were a 'Mickey Doolan', at the very least I'd be demanding a coupla three free *buzz-bombs for my £25!

£25 to see the Pope. Would you pay?

People are entitled to spend their money on what they want to. Like all the idiots that pay to see 22 idiots kicking a football around. Or the ones who pay hundreds to go to a rock concert. Need I go on?

If your money is earned legally its yours to spend as you wish.

I was there as a guest (yes yes I know!!) I didn't spend £25. I spent £3.90 return for the tube from Wembley to Bond St and £10 for fish, chips and a sprite. So where does the £25 come into it. Vigil was by invite only. Is this another case of ill informed Cy44 backside talking?

Didn't see Pikey though! Unless he was crouched down in that car going round the block.

One thing that is very sad to see on this thread is that there is a lot of pain around concerning the Pope, his past, the Roman Catholic Church, the sins of the priests and the effect on children, their parents and members of the church. And no real closure on the issues involv ed.

What is the answer in human and theological terms other than repentance and forgiveness, both of which are central to the Christian gospel (same applies to the Orthodox church in the south, but that is another story).

At the end of the day, we will all be judged by our actions (that is if you believe in a final judgement) and it is gratifying to know that we will not be judged on the actions of others. Hence for the sake of our own peace of mind, we MUST forgive.

One very tough part of the Christianmessage, in view of that tremendous pain which is around and which threatens to kill the church itself along with the message.

maz a very good message. it is so controversial, it will always be. Groucho my last post on this did not come out as intended, What I meant to say was why were the previous popes not responsible for an answer, but my mind gets ahead of my typing finger. I have to say however the thousands who turned out and to hear him apologise is something. In response to the question on this i would have paid. Not that I agree with the abuse but because of my upbringing and my catholic faith x

Words are cheap, Lilli!

Had the Pope, together with his entourage, come to the UK with a compensation package for victims of all these [Catholic] predatory paedophile priests, such action could be viewed positively - but public lamentations are worthless, and worse - completely meaningless to any unindoctrinated individual.
