Hi All,

A report on Sky News today.

A leading Think Tank has said that if people want to get on in The UK they should leave the northern cities and head for the South of England. There is little chance if you stay on in the North! There will always be an inequality of wealth.

Now no doubt many Southerners will agree (especially those who have never been there)

but given that we all pay the same rates of tax, it seems us Northerners are getting less than a fair deal .Should we be taking their advise and moving South, or doing as so many have before, and looking for pastures new abroad like the TRNC?

What was your reason for leaving the UK for the TRNC?

Wyn,

One of my main reasons for buying in NC and eventualy moving out of the UK is income tax, inadaquate/incapable goverment, taxation on all things, racisim, crime, fuel prices, imigrants, don't know where to stop really.

Tried Newbury for two years (nice pleace to visit), then moved back! Plenty of money in the North with the commercial areas growing by the year. The advent of the computer and the internet to a large extent negates forced location. Oh yes, and the beers much better up here

We initialy looked at Purchasing in TRNC 5 years ago after years of fantastic holidays in both the South and North cyprus, but decided on purchasing in the North as it appeared less built up , the lowcrime rate affordable cost of living fab weather and the friendly welcome we always got seemed all plus points .

It was with the view of retiring in TRNC , but as of late decided to put these plans on hold as our purchase of property have certanly not gone down the smooth route so to speak , we though we had made allowances for the infancy of the property buying process , but the constant hassle we have had has proven to be to much for our plans to retire here to come into fruition , coupled up with the cost of living hikes water electricity etc , and the everlasting ways of taking so much time to get things done . However we are now looking at other countries for a happy retirement as there is nothing much left in the UK , but we will continue to visit TRNC as we love the locals , our apartment , and the scenery .

Breezyboy,

Never expressed an opinion myself! I am happy with my cloth cap, whippet and Pork Scratchings. I like Coronation Street, so I might as well live here.

Chardonnay and Prawn Cocktails never were for the likes of us Newkie Brown and black pudding. I bet they dont sing The Blaydon Races on their way home from Ascot in their

Rollers with their picnic hampers!

God bless you Sir,

wyn.

I feel the need to speak up for the (sometimes) sunny south of England. Although the north does have its charm, it always seems to be raining whenever I visit. However, if we can ever sell our UK house, would move/retire to Lapta in an instance.

As I understand it......

It was during the Napoleonic wars when a monkey was washed ashore at Hartlepool. The

locals captured it, and questioned it, believing it may be a spy. When it failed to answer their questions then local fisherman took it out and hanged it.

It is not a question to ask in a Hartlepool pub, especially near closing time, as the locals can still be very touchy about it.

It has been my observation through my many years that the further

north you go in u.k. the better the food, the b. & b.'s & the hospitality.

Just come down from the Isle of Skye (sing!) after a glorious week with

4 lovely warm days & only 1 day's rain, which is better than we had in the

south (Ayrshire - flooding) It has just stopped.

Seems the think tank..........needs to think (that would be a 1st) again.

Sky News today...Walthamstow Dog Racing Stadium to close, and be sold off for Housing Development......Locals up in arms..............some quality of life.

Now....The Sunderland Greyhound Racing Stadium...Nightclub.....Restaurant £5 entry.

That is what we call quality of life.....Affordable Housing........Good beer £2 per pint.

Home Office Advice on travelling North from London:

Good transport links by road to Watford Gap or train to Milton Keynes.

Chardonnay and Ciabatta widely available.

TRAVEL RISK : LOW

HEALTH RISK : LOW

Northwards to Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derby/Stoke (also known as Black Country, for obvious reasons), transport is varied and unreliable.

Do not eat any pie products North of Melton Mowbray.

TRAVEL RISK : MEDIUM

HEALTH RISK : MEDIUM

North from Nottingham, risk of being robbed by supposedly 'Merry Men' if they think you are wealthier than them.

High animal fats in all foodstuffs.

TRAVEL RISK : HIGH

HEALTH RISK : MEDIUM

From there to Sheffield/Leeds, most transport by Ox-Cart on attractive but uncomfortable original Roman Cobbled Roads.

You will encounter language difficulties.

All foostuffs cooked in Lard.

TRAVEL RISK : HIGH

HEALTH RISK : HIGH

North from there, very little known, transport by local guides and donkeys.

DO NOT eat pie products, especially Growlers. You may be informed they are made to secret handed-down recipes, but most are believed to contain Ferret and Road-Kill.

TRAVEL RISK : HIGH

HEALTH RISK : EXTREME

Any travel further North is not advised.

Serious language difficulties.

Tribal Feudalism.

All food deep fried.

Men in skirts playing discordant music from inflated sheeps bladders under the armpit. Most women obese and agressive.

TRAVEL RISK : EXTREME

HEALTH RISK : EXTREME

Kimosh,

Surely the way to enjoy the site is to select the threads that interest you, and ignore those that dont. The more popular threads are those that have the most responses.

The site is moderated to ensure that there are no personal insults or anything of an offensive nature.

I hope you will enjoy matters of those of interest to you, but conversely leave others to enjoy what interests them.

Take care,

wynyardman.

ROBnjo

What did the Romans do for us? I learned recently that what they did for

us in Scotland was to leave us the first map we ever had of our country.

(When they were called back to Rome) They did have an older map of part

of the Hebrides by a Greek!

I love all the messages on here. I love Coronation Street and think that I could live quite happily in a place just like that. Give me yorkshire pudding, black pudding but not pork scratchings. Yorkshire men need lusty women with generous hearts and bodies to match----I'm moving----up North!

Thread title and first message made no mention of England - it just developed that way. Almost as if some people forget that northerners can be southerners too.

NOTICE TO ALL DIVERS, NEW SHARK REPELLENT.

Someone has come up with the idea to wear a T shirt with the South is BETTER than the North emblazoned on it. Its been found not even a shark would swallow that.

At a guess, the oil companies for a start. Isn't that where the UK Treasury gets so much revenue from?

I beleive the oil companys only lease the fields with the british govenment stumping up the cash to develop the fields in the 90s and early 2000/1

Or so I am told.

I must agree with Pike on this matter of oil.

Since when did they English have any expertise in drilling

for oil in the North Sea? Thought it was all U.S., Texan oil companies

& there are plenty of our men on the rigs, and also many others in

well paid jobs there, (although dangerouse work) Thatcher never once

acknowledged that it was North Sea Oil that saved her bacon (and ours

economically) Yes, we might do an Arabic yet..
