From my own experience don't put anything in your car, they would steal the wheels if they could. If you have an in date tax disc take it out, it will go as well. I am not saying all this would be done in TRNC, anywhere in transit. Best advice don't bring a car.

salsmum, welcome to the land of exorbitant import tax ,be prepared to pay as much import duty on your car as the car cost you in the UK, if you put stuff in the car you take a chance of loosing it...Good ere in it !!

Hi Salsmum, I vaguely recall someone telling me a while ago that when they brought their car over, they were taxed on the radio that was fitted - even though it was a simple manufacturer's standard radio. I think there's special licences you have to pay for all communications equipment, including radios - just like there's special licences to import a TV - and that's possibly why they had extras to pay. If possible might be an idea to remove the radio, carry it with you and reinstall when you get here! I would speak with your shipper to see if there are any restrictions on what you can bring over, if any. I would have thought you'd have to declare everything and then if there's anything like TV, communications equipment, you or your shipping agent would have to sort out a licence for you in advance of the ship arriving in port.

With regard to any foodstuffs, cosmetics, electrical items, I don't know what the regs are when it's being imported for personal use - there was no problem when we brought our container of personal stuff over for example - but for business purposes there are other special regs and paperwork to be completed, so it might be worth asking the specific question of your shipping agent to be sure. Have you checked whether, if you plan to bring over personal stuff via ship (such as a car), whether you will be able to simply collect it from the port - I'm wondering whether you'll have to go through the process of getting 'In and Out papers', Muhtar's letter, and other paperwork as you do when importing personal household stuff when moving out to live here long term. Possible / likely but just check. If so you'll need to be here a couple of weeks before your car arrives to give you time to get things sorted etc. Good Luck.

Or, just thinking ... do you already know everything you need to do re. the arrangements and were you actually asking if there were any specific items people would suggest you brought either cos they're not already available here, or because you're trying to be industrious by bringing over in bulk things that you could 'supply' to us for a fraction of the cost here??!!

Don't put anything at all in the car, they will just steal it!
