What do you all think of a race night/ donkey derby night would be welcomed in Northern cyprus..... I am just

enquiring as I am moving over in the next couple of months. I have always found them to be good fund raisers as well as good fun. I am bringing over all equipment and would be interested in any input you may have.... Positive input only please.......

If it is not charity based then who or what would you be raising funds for????? It's very dodgy over here just 'collecting monies' for no specific reason

Yes I understand your reasoning "Krypton" but I was just wanting some feedback on the subject... I have been coming over for the last couple of years and it was just a thought. I do alot over here and its a very enjoyable and fun evening. I realise the difficulties involved, but would of thought it was something different for charities to raise money.. I understand your comment on "collecting money for no specific reason" but that would be up to the person or persons asking for the event . I can only provide the event and would not be responsible for where or how the money is used.. That is in no way a critisism on anyone running a charity event , but I hope you take my point in the way it is meant..

What is a donkey derby night? I hope it doesn't involve live donkeys., they are such sweet animals, yet get so abused.

Oh I think that is a super idea - they are such fun nights. Sure there are loads of charities on this side of the island that would be so glad of some funding.

cheers

If the Donkey Derby does include riding donkeys will there be lessons available?

And will it be safe for all?

Msg 7 & 9

Jinky will, I'm sure, correct me if I'm wrong. I went to a couple of these nights when I lived in Shetland. It invlves showing the races on a big screen. You place your bets before the race & then....'they're off!!' Great fun, a change from bingo, karioke, quizzes and a brilliant way of raising much needed funds for all the different causes we have here. Count me in Jinky!

Somebody already knows the result!! Of course it will all be above board and legal, right.......... No cheating not in Cyprus. Hah!

Sal, try not to be so cynical all your life!

I'm not 100% sure but I think when we had this on Shetland the videos (yes long time ago) were delivered sealed, so no one knew the outcome of the race till it was played. We had these nights each year for Children in Need. I like to think that the majority of people are honest and want to raise as much cash as possible for the chosen charity/cause. Maybe I am a touch naive?

Hopefully Jinky will come back on here soon & explain his system in more detail.

Thanks all for a some what positive response.. ( well apart from cynical sal of course)....

The races ARE shown on a big screen and there is betting involved , (but ts not ladbrookes). The races are chosen at random by the people at the race night after the betting has been completed .. Better explain that further.....

1.All the races (usually 6 per night) are sponsored by (individuals or companies) prior to race night

2 All the horses are sold prior to the race night by the said charity organiser

3. The jockeys for each horse in race are bid fo on the night..

4.The betting is done prior to each race and no-one knows which race is to be run , so no cheating involved

its for charity and its fun remember.....

5. The odds are worked out prior to race commencing by computer ....

6. You are paid out after the race ......

7. . The banter is good and the money raised goes to the charity ..... SO WHATS ABOVE BOARD YES..... DONT TAR EVERYONE WITH THE SAME BRUSH ...PLEASE SAL !!!!

How cynical some people are , talking of cheating and not being above board......

Oh sorry, by the way message 7 & 9 NO real donkeys involved , so no training will be needed...

Thanks for that Jinky, I think it is the same thing that we did on Shetland years ago - Great fun!

I hope some bar/restaurant owner with a bit of insight & enough room comes forward & organises a night soon - I'm sure once one place has one it'll become a regular event.

Good luck with it!

Thanks all for you responses, but as I said I am not intending to be over ther for a couple of months ..

I would also say its probably best anyway for this type of event to be done in the cooler weather.( Maybe wrong though) I suppose its up to the organiser really . I think you have more idea than me about that...

Just 1 question...Is Sal 1262 always as negative about everything ?????????

Well there seems to be positive feedback from the members on this site and hope that there will be alot more when I get the chance to run the first race night....

If anyone wants any further information on organising an event they can contact me by e.mail and I will help as much as i possibly can....

I would also like any information from anyone regarding the legal side of running a race night , permits etc..

I am bringing over my equipment and have heard about equipment being taken by police if they do not have a permit.... Maybe I am wrong , but would be pleased for any info on this matter....
