Hello All,

Has anyone seen Mumtaz Premium Rice for sale in TRNC? Is there an Asian foods specialist shop anywhere?

Thanks,

Eddie

Eddie, you need to go over to the Greek side, there are several Asian food specialists there, about 5 mins away from the walking border in nicosea

All varieties can be found in the local Paddy fields, the problem is the lack of water!

Hello All,

Not sure whether it is a Basmati rice, as it's produced in Pakistan.

Unfortunately, my wife can'y cross over to look for it.

Cheers,

Eddie

mumtaz premium rice is packed in bradford i think, also mumtaz curries are in the supermarkets in the uk, it is a pakistani basmati rice, you can get good basmati rice here now, although a little expensive, but so is it in the south once you have paid for insurance,if you drive over.

Hello Andrew,

Having checked on the net, it seems that Basmati rice is grown in Pakistan, as well as India. On the label, it doesn't actually claim to be Basmati, but it certainly cooks much better than all of the rice types & brands that I've used in the UK.

I'll do a border raid, when I'm next over in October, if no-one can come up with a source in Kibris before then.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Hello Dave,

Our messages crossed in cyber-space - or I'm a very slow typist.

Which are the best rice brands available in Kibris, in your opinion, and in which shops?

Cheers,

Eddie

Thanks Dave,

I'll bring a few packs over from Baku with me in October; in the meantime, Tara can try out the Tilda rice.

Cheers,

Eddie

Hello Dave,

When I'm over, I'll be making my favourites from the first "Madhur Jaffrey" Indian Cookery book, from 1982. I've used all sorts of rice, including Tilda, over the years.

My wife, Tara, is from Azerbaijan, and prefers Mumtaz rice to all others, for all her traditional Azeri recipes.

Cheers,

Eddie

That dish is not really an everyday one - more for weddings, et cetera. Azeri food is generally very tasty. I've grown quite a lot in the four years that Tara has been force-feeding me!
