Banks typically charge businesses a few pence to process a debit card sale, however shoppers can be stung for £5 and often much more.At the same time, firms are profiteering by inflating the ‘must pay’ processing fees on credit card purchases. Credit cards: Are you paying over the odds on your transactions?

Household names such as Ryanair, easyJet, Odeon, NCP, Premier Inn, Eurostar and the Government’s DVLA are all in the dock.

Even some local councils have even begun imposing surcharges of 3 per cent if people pay for services, including council tax, by credit card.

Consumer champion Which? has lifted the lid on the rip-off, which is outlawed

This represents a huge profit against the actual bank fee of around 10p. The tactic has been condemned by the banks while the Visa Europe card organisation said it was ‘completely opposed’ to the charges.

Wanderer msg 1- I do wonder where the newspapers get their information from.

On many producs we do not charge any fee. Where we do pay for a fee if there is a reasonable profit we sometimes (often) swallow the card costs.

We pay BMS a fee of about 2.50 % on MasterCard and visa transactions so we round it up to 3% (I hope you do not consider that too greedy)

We also pay them a little over 65 pence per debit card transaction - we are very greedy by charging you a whole £1.00 on that.

There is also another charge that is on every "PDQ" terminal transaction we have to pay a phone call to make sure that your card is acceptable and as many can fail more than once for one reason or another that also adds up but we do not charge for that.



There are many travel companies (and others) who pay more than we do.

What you charge is reasonable passing on of costs the above companies and many more taking the p
