Coming back to N Cyprus early October and intended to bring one of my old unlocked mobiles and purchase Turkcell sim to avoid roaming on uk sim.

Just read following on Turkcell website http://touristinfoonline.turkcell.com.tr/en/how-to/imei.html

Anyone know anything about this.

Hi SteveA

I took an unlocked phone over with us a couple of weeks ago and went into a shop in Kyrenia and bought a SIM card and the man behind the counter registered the phone for us and it was working fine. We also bought top up from the supermarket. Hope that helps.

Yes, I always do this & it is easy to change your sim card over if you have

unlocked phone & much cheaper.

I noticed when we were over our first and only time there are plenty of shops in Kyrenia selling phones, are they cheaper than UK, do they also unlock them. Can anyone also tell me how muc roughly a sim card is please, i,ve read that Turkcell are the best so will be buying the same.

I think if you have an English phone you need to get it unlocked in the UK (but please dont quote me on that) - I was charged £11.99 in a shop in the UK to have it unlocked and it took about an hour. The SIM Card we bought was 20YTL and you get 100 units on there. We got our SIM Card in Kyrenia and then bought top up from the supermarket.

Mobile phones are very expensive in the TRNC compared to the Uk.

In UK the price of handsets is subsidised because you are often locked into a certain network

Your link

http://touristinfoonline.turkcell.com.tr/en/how-to/imei.html

is for Turkcell in Turkey which is not the same as Turkcell in Cyprus so your UK phone will work perfectly well with a KKTC sim card

Phone unlocking used to be done in The Phone Shop at Karaoglanoglu. On the main strip of shops with Unwins and other Estate Agents at the far end from Unwins. It's been a while since they did ours but may still offer the service.

Get your Sim card in there at the same time or across the road in Lemar.

Couple of weeks ago got my SIM card & top ups from a little shop in Girne centre. Very helpful. Set the SIM up for me & registered the top up cards. Worked out much, much cheaper. Card + 2 topups 60YTL. Made about 7 phone calls home of about 10mins & have about 150 credits left. Told that to use my Vodaphone would be about £1.50 minute.
