Hi all,

My "local" cat has suffered a urinary tract problem, which the vet says is caused by "Supermarket" Cat Foods such as Friskies and the like. Luckily we caught the problem in time as we noticed he was digging lots of holes in the garden but was unable to use them. The vet says this is a very common problem with Tom cats. Now he has been treated and is back to full health but we must change his diet to either Royal Chiano or Iams, both of which the vet can supply, at a price. Anybody know where these products might be available elsewhere please? Thanks in anticipation, MIKE

Hi pc4854,

We started off with one cat, feed her LaCat dried food,

comes in 3 Kg bags @ 21.95tl & smaller.

Never had that sort of problem.

We now have three, one tom and two females.

Go south to one of the pet shops they stock a much wider range than here, and hopefully at a better price.

The shop just over the Metehan crossing does cat food but i can't remember which brand. It just oposite the horse racing place.

We always bring our pet food from the south.

They don't stock specialist pet foods in the north.

When I was in England I was told my cat had urinary problems due to buying things like Friskies etc. They then sold me Science CD cat food. When I got another kitten, I only bought her the expensive stuff(not Iams, neither liked it), but Science and Royal Canine. Despite living her whole life on expensive cat food(when we moved here I would go to the south to buy it), she still got the same problem as my boy cat. They both lived to a good age despite having this problem, and now my cats have a mixture of both. I really don't know what is right. There is a pet shop near the Bellapais roundabout that sells Iams, and I blelieve it is going to sell Royal Canine as well.

i actually heard that Tom cats need a change of food ;ie wet and dry to stop this problem.Cat food is very high in protein , that why dogs should not be feed cat food.In some cats the protein content can cause kidney problems , in Dogs kidney failure. Iams is available at pet shop by Bellapias lights...if its still there.

Maybe try a bit of fish ...mixed with rice ..raw eggs, Chicken scraps and such , they like a variety too!!! fussy little felines...mine loves prawns!!

Thanks everyone for your contributions. Have located both the shops mentioned and I think Moxie's advice is the way forward, plenty of fresh meat and fish and egg with some of the dry food each day. Cheers, MIKE

They are funny creatures my cat hates tuna wont eat chicken raw or cooked likes prawns and yoghurt not together though! If i give her something she does not like she will NEVER eat it doesnt matter how hungry she is. I love her to bits though.

If your cat has a urinary problem, I should have made it more clear in my last message, that it needs a specific type of food wthin that brand. Just buying Iams is not enough, do they have a type specifically for urinary problems? Science Diet do, either dried or tinned, and I think, Royal Canine do one, in their line of cat foods now. I do wish you well, but have to say I have done everything by the book for over 20 years and still had 3 cats develop the problem, 2 male and 1 female, fingers crossed that my other 4 don't. Only 1 of mine has ever eaten chicken, but I wouldn't give it to them raw, nor any type of raw meat come to that.

Message 3, its 19.95 in Ileli for 3kg. We use it and our 2 cats look fantastic on it. I like the vets thoughts tho, it needs this food and as it happens we sell that !!! Try Le cat p.c, im sure they will love it.
