A few weeks ago I posted a question about anti virus programmes, most members recommended using AVG 8, which is a free anti virus programme. I installed this programme and it has been working beauifully until this morning, when a notice appeared telling me I am now not protected. There is a message saying my update has failed because A.Bin is missing. I un- installed AVG and installed it again, but unfortunately I am still getting the same message. Can anyone offer any suggestions

I upgraded to AVG8 a while back and it slowed my computer down so much it virtually stopped so I reverted to AVG7.5 which allowed some spyware in which in turn allowed someone to hack mky computer.

I now use Panda

Make sure you only have one anti-virus programme installed on your computer, if you have more than one they can conflict with one another and slow your computer down, so if you have more than one decide which one you are going to use and un-install the other(s)

Copied from another forum

For all users of AVG, there is a cock up (sorry, error) in the latest .bin files which is causing the update to fail.

Grisoft are working on this at the mo.....

"Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

Please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue."

If you had followed all the instructions it took you to free site for 8.0. Sorry you paid for no reason.

As for todays problem. Had PC switched off this pm and when switched on problem had cleared itself. Because AVG is free you have to wait sometimes when problem ocurs Have used it for several years and always found that next day at latest problem is rectified.

I updated from 7 to 8 on the free one and after a month it came up that I was no longer covered. I tried several times to reconnect to the free one but no luck. And rather not be covered I paid because I was happy with AVG

I got rid of windows on my laptop and installed Ubunto (Lynix). Its a gui interface and most of it is now compatible with Windows applications because so many people are now using Thunderbird and Firefox as their default Internet/mail. As its lynix you don't need to have any sort of Anti Virus because no-one has bothered to try to hack into it. I find it a lot easier to use than Windows and best of all its free.

Well done Karen, not many are prepared to spend the time installing and learning a slightly different system. The computer mag, computeractive has a web site with loads of free, safe downloads - http://www.computeractive.com. Well woth a visit. AVG (anti virus), Zone alarm (firewall), Avast (Anti virus alternative), Spybot (anti spyware) to metion a few. Theres also all the other programs you might need, ie cd/dvd writers, word/spreadsheet, u name it its proberbly there. I dont believe that to keep a computer in running order, you have to spend money, just a little time. One goldern rule, always back up important files/drivers.
