Just been reading the rules we had a slightly different experience, because we had brought a container in,

we had to pay the import taxes within 4 weeks,no amount of pleading (groveling) made any difference.

It just might be the rules have changed again but worth checking up on

Simply be prepared to be atrociously blackmailed, or be ready to have your vehicle impounded and lose it with a smile.

You'd better believe it!

Sorry, but this information is completely out of date regarding the costs involved.

You now pay "X" amount per cc of your engine and that varies on which group it's in.

I think the top group is $7 per cc. E.G. 4 litre car is $28,000 + $3,600

When I read the link, I too was convinced these rates were out of date. Not only the amount in US dollars but the per cent charges dependent on size of engine have increased too.

When the new Government were elected one of the first things they did was increase duties on EU origin vehicles as well. They have also done the same for duties on new cars. They are presumably assuming that the TC motorist loves his car so much, he will pay any price for one.

Of course Government ministers get a car thrown in with the job, so the duties don't affect them.

Cyprusjoker,

With a classic car over 25 years old, you used to pay the duty based on it's orginal selling price when new.

You have to prove this to them e.g. a letter from U.K. motor club or heritage museum.

When I imported my 29 Chrysler the figures were: cost new $1800 at $6 =£1 (in 1929) = £300

Roughly 50% of £300 plus $600.

If it's a U.K. made car then it's roughly 25% of it's original selling price when new plus $600.

"Things change so don't hold me on those figures."

As far as I know, the old rules still apply to classic cars.
