Good question, I do try and feed strays but not close to other properties if you see what I mean.

It's a dilemma I have here in the UK too. Trouble is with putting scraps out for the stray animals is that it can attract rats as well!!!

Very true Blackbird.

Fortunately the amount of strays here has gone down a lot, but when there is a dog around, i always make sure he is around first then put out some food behind my house, and wait till it's gone. but as i have 2 dogs of my own, they get all the scraps, so if i see a stray, i tend to cook some extra for them, so does my neighbour, we both feed the strays that come around here.

Seems to me to be kind and OK provided checks are made to ensure it is quickly devoured by dogs as apart from the rats mentioned there are the flying insects which can smell such food from great distances then perhaps visit your kitchen next

yes a difficult one...but my bin now smells like a dead rabbit...ive never had a problem with strays i think they have a route which they travel to find food and move on to the next ...maybe ???. But i am sure now that my smelly bin is attracting vermin and insects , who dont move on lol !!

If you want the animals to thrive, and thus continue to reproduce, then feed them, but do not then criticise the fact or complain that there are many stray running about, you are part of the problem, not the solution.

For the record KAR have set up feeding stations at many hotels. They not only stop the cats/dogs from pestering the guests and if the food is put out on a regular basis then it gives them a good chance in catching and neutering.

I think this depends on where you live. In Cyprus i don't think there is a big rats or mice problem as we have snakes.

Feeding stations away from homes and business's would be good.

There is a big problem with rats and mice in some places. So please find an other way to help stray dogs and cats.

msg 15, I pray that you come back as a dog in an area where the human species hate dogs!!!!!! You will be back as you're only a first timer with much to learn. You are of the ilk that believe humans are superior. SAD SAD SAD. Humans are the power on this planet at present BUT due to their abuse of this planet and everything on it, in it and around it they will become extinct, like dinosaurs. We are supposed to be the caretakers of this world. We actually own nothing and ruin everything. Dogs were domesticated by HUMANS as were cats and we owe them a great deal for having interfered with their normal existence. As per usual we should have left well alone. We do more damage to all other species than anything else and hopefully bacteria will see an end to us cos we just are incapable of learning to behave responsibly. Majority of us Not fit for purpose!!!!!!!!!!!

MSG 17

Actually, dogs have done well out of their domestication ...there are approx. 400 million domesticated dogs wordwide wheras the wolf , from which all these sprang, has only 200, 000 . The dog got a good deal! (ref. 'What on Earth Evolved -Christopher Lloyd)

I take my food scraps to the wheelie bin, the wild cats follow me, I open the lid, throw the scrapes in it, wait for the cats to jump in it and close the lid. Simple.

Surely if your bin stinks the answer is to wash it out?

Here in my garden in UK I used to put bread out for the birds, until I realised it was feeding a family of rats living under my garden shed. Sorry, birds, but the bread goes in the bin now.

Dont need to put food scraps in the bin to make it smelly, I have a very appreciative border collie!

Bin it! and organise a vet to tour the countryside with a dart gun to cull the large number of dogs running wild. We counted 9 outside Kozan village plus several others around Lapta A'cak, Karaman. And our recent holiday,as in previous years, was blighted by dogs barking 24/7. Luckily we stayed in a wonderful little spot which offset the infernal nuisance.

I notice many of the dogs running loose have collars !!??

Littlejohn, you say you come here on holiday.

What gives you the right to judge and decide on the stray dog situation in a country thats not your own.?

This is not the UK this is Cyprus. Don't come if offends you so much.

We have a "stray" cat that we feed every day and it is no bother to our own three UK domestic cats. It has become quite cheeky though nipping into the house and stealing the cat food although we cannot get anywhere near it. Helps keep any rodent population down as well!!!!

My Cypriot neighbours want to come back as one of my cats, as they said, they will get fed regularly, brushed, loved and generally well looked after. I took that as a real compliment.

Back to the point of the thread, it's a difficult one, because you may find you suddenly take on a lot of strays, or they may just eat in passing your house and carry on to the next one. You have to decide yourself. I now have 6 stray cats that wait outside my door every morning for their breakfast, and I have to say I wish I had never stated feeding 1. I repeat 1. My own 4 have to be locked in at night now because the strays were not only taking the food(ok so I don't leave any down), but were sleeping all over the furniture and had generally moved in.

Actually Littlejohn has a point.

We have far higher rates of animal disease in the TRNC, in large part precisely because there are so many strays.

Whilst owned pets receive jabs and inoculations and are regularly treated for worms, tics, fleas and other disease-carrying parasites, strays are not. Instead they become floating islands of disease.

It would be far better to have no strays and is probably wiser not to encourage them to loiter around ones home as domestic pets are endangered by doing so. In fact not only pets, as of the 30 forms of leishmaniasis carried by mammals 21 are capable of being passed on to humans as well.

some very nteresting responses...first may i say that i have done so for years and do not have any strays hanging around, i was interested to hear peoples points of view.It is interesting to hear different arguments for and against.

They must have a round that they walk in search of food, they dont see me put it down so maybe the trick is to only do it when you cant be seen. All food has gone by morning, no trace, nothing.

The only strays i have hanging around are fat abandoned dogs with collars and nicely groomed ??, maybe by Brits as they respond to english and are not afraid.

I cannot wash the bin out as it is a large industrial sized one. It never smelt until some tenants moved in and put food in the bin. I have never seen rats or mice in excess numbers,to many cats , snakes and foxes, and as for ticks, the local goats deposit loads of them.

Personally i will continue to put scraps out. I would not like to see any creature starve and die a painful death.
