The reason why Turkey has to support N. Cyprus economy is because they have done nothing to help TCs beat the trade bans and embargoes! Instead they helped finance ongoing projects by successive governments create huge buildings for police forces, municipalities, social benefits, graduate pensions, and many other unproductive establishments where masses of TCs had taken up employment. Add to that the increase in the number of Banks, Estate agents, Tourist resorts, and all kinds of supermarkets or high street shops - that left hardly any Turkish Cypriot work in the fields to produce food!

So most of what was home produced, is now imported from Turkey in huge quantities FROM TURKEY! We are talking about your daily fruit, vegetables, dried food including pulses, even clothes (hundreds of TC factories had shut down during last decade). More than 75% of what you see in supermarket shelves is imported from Turkey) Those small producers of things like biscuits, chocolates ets who dared to

export to Turkey went bust through no fault of their own. In short - most of the money pumped into N Cyprus economy returnd back to Turkey to pay for the home producers / exporters. The way I see it it id not really a burden on Turkey as such. It is more like an investment in one of its provinces with a hig rate of benefit return!

Also note that one of the biggest government expenditures - construction of new roads is also carried out by the contractors from Turkiye. The fuel for power stations and vehicles is purchased from Turkiye! So try working those out too...

So when the direct trade embargoes are lifted, and they will be.Why not let the farmers use all the agricultural land that is clearly available to produce and export their wares.Nice posts Big Oz,

Paul.

If the embargo is lifted there will be enough to support the local economy from the exports of Citrus fruit and grapes, as well as from increased Tourism.

As for agricaltural land available - the non subsidised farmer who has to pay 3-4 times as much for his raw material as the ones in Turkey, and pray for the rain to arrive at the right time (with no proper water supplies from dams and reservoirs) ends up with a price tag for his product, a lot higher than the imported ones. If the farmers were to get EU aid and government subsidies most members enjoy, plus a chance to compete in direct export in the absence of embargoes, it will definitely be a different picture.

As i understand it Northern Cyprus exports to Turkey, third world countries and Southern Cyprus.I think i read somewhere that in 2009,the North exported,4,400,00 to Southern Cyprus.60% of the Norths exports, though go to Turkey.I may be wrong on this, but would be open to constructive comment,

Paul.

turkey will have to go on paying something to support north cyprus,

or suffer a fatal loss of face and throw its 60,000 "new cypriots" to the dogs

meanwhile the greek cypriot administration maintains its illegal sanctions:

since these have not "succeeded" to date all they can have done is antagonise

so whoever would trust them now? thank goodness cyprus is partitioned I say
