I am sure many of you will be interested in a satellite receiver that I brought with me on Saturday from UK. It is a Protek9600 (Standard Def) or Protek9700(HiI Def). I have been using them at home for 18 months. The receiver has an ethernet socket to connect it to the internet.

I have a 1.2 m dish here and a dc motor (not diseqc).

At the moment I can receive: Sky Sports, Sky Germany, Nova, D+, Jsc Sports, Showtime., With a bigger dish I am sure that I would get Canal Satellite, DigiAlb, RTL and others as well. The point is that once you have bought the receiver and set it up there is no further charge ; it is absolutely free.

Set up is easy it is pretty well plug and play.

How much is the receiver?

I assume that you need a motorised dish to get all the channels.

Can you get BBC and ITV etc ?

At the moment you can only get Sky Sports 1,2 and 3 on the Astra 2 satellite. Yes you need to be motorised to get all the networks. The receivers cost around £140 for the SD version and £250 for the HD. If you look on Ebay you will see them advertised. The HD version has a USB socket to which you can attach a portable drive ((I have a 250gb one); you will then be able to record using the built in software.

You can buy Fortec Star sattv receivers, SD and HD versions, that do the same thing for half the price via Amazon in the UK. I've been using the SD version for 12 months now with FB results and no probs.

Amazon despatch to the TRNC, but don't forget to add the Mersin 10, Turkey, to your address here.

Why does this receiver need to connect to the internet? Does it need the internet to work?

Amazon only dispatch books and cd's to the TRNC, they won't send anything else.

Enrico:re 2 - no the dish wouldn't get BBC/ ITV - far too small

Geoff: re 4 - IMHO I wouldn't give Fortec-Star house room - of ALL the well known brands they are THE most unreliable.. YMMV ( your mileage may vary) I thought I'd give 'em another chance recently and the receiver I bought lasted 13 months. You gets what you pay for..

I have no experience of Protek

I can answer Geoff and Washerman at the same time.

I have just been looking up Fortec Star receivers and as far as I can see they need patching; this is is a process which you have to repeat periodically in order to keep up to date. The advantage of the Proteks is that once connected, all updates are automatic.

If you familiar with card sharing, the 9700HD is card sharing ready for NEWCAMD and I believe that this may be available soon.

Tighmonadh....... ah! so, this is a card sharing receiver that needs to be attached to the internet. Where do the automatic updates come from?

... be sure it doesn't decode any pay tv services when it comes out of the box ... you have to install the right software ... after that the updates and the key for decryption will come from a card sharing server somewhere in russia

Re 8: Mine did not need patching. It cost me £34 from Amazon a year ago and was delivered to us here in Famagusta via regular mail (9 days). Maybe (1) specs have altered (2) Amazon policy on delivery to TRNC have changed since then, in which case I apologise for duff gen. As I say mine works fine.

Whatever model/make you buy they are nearly always much cheaper in the UK, and one can always get someone to bring one out.

Re Highnoon's comments. He is talking rubbish. This receiver works straight from the box. I said that in my first post and I stand by it. To the person asking about card sharing, I am sure that is what is being employed but I have had these receivers for 18 months now and paid nothing and never had a loss of service. Frankly I don't care whether the service comes from Russia or anywhere for that matter. I also have been involved with satellite receivers for long enough to realise that nothing lasts for ever but so far so good !!

... as I have purchased my Protek reciever in january from a sat online store in Germany, I can only report my experiences with the reciever ... the device I got out of the box didn't decode any pay tv service by default ... btw selling such a device would be highly illegal, at least in Germany ... if tighmonadh thinks I'm talking rubbish than may it be, but hopefully nobody would be disappointed when he/she shares my experience after unpacking "the box" ...

Highnoon if you are unhappy with your Protek receiver perhaps you would be interested in selling it to me. I will be taking mine home in a couple of weeks and would quite like to leave one here. I can only reiterate that I have been very satisfied with mine for the past 18 months. If you have had a bad experience with yours then I apologise but I am sure that it is a simple fix. If you Google" Protek you will find many happy owners of both models.
