Hi we have a car on 'ZT' plates and the duty is due to be paid soon. However due to the hike in taxes we want to sell it in the South or part exchange it in the South. Does anyone know if we can do this or will we have to pay the import tax anyway? We couldn't pay the import duty last year because the office at Cusoms & Excise wouldn't take it the day we arrived there! Any help on this one much appreciated.

Had ZT plates when we bought our car in the TRNC. From memory we were not allowed to leave the north and therefore selling in the South will be pretty impossible.

Apologies don,t wish to correct last post, but ZT plates are now allowed to cross border as long as tax is up to date and insurance is purchased at border. Been over a couple of times recently with my ZT

Thanks guys. We too have been over the border but they have gotten a bit iffy lately and were turned away last time because it was ZT and we didn't have Greek Road Tax disc, which we had never been asked for before.

Has anyonany knowledge of changing a ZT to Cyp plates or sold a ZT in the South?

we are on ZT at the moment. Going to pay our tax in the next few days. Why would customs and Excise not take your money...

You will only be able to sell the car in the south if it has been imported there, and you have documentation from the ROC Customs. The vehicle will not be able to be registered in the South without them.Your choices are either ship to limasol via Athens or you may be able to ship famagusta Haifa limasol, all in all more expence than its probaly worth.

Or do what most seem to be doing, put the Brit plates back on and keep on driving.

Spud1 and Ian

See links below - may make things clearer or leave you more confused.

Unless the law has changed very recently you have 12 months to pay your taxes and duties from the date you permanently import a car.
