Who is your favourite singer? What is your favourite song?

A short while ago my friend and fellow DJ, Max Pickup, who presents the Saturday morning SOUL TRAIN show on Radio Bayrak, posted a message on the forum 44 board, asking for people to name their favourite Tamla Motown singers - and he had a great response.

Well I am asking, who are your favourite singers/bands, and/or songs, from any genre of music. What I will do, (unless you advise me otherwise), is to play those songs, (providing I can find them), along with your name, as a request on the Sunday morning JUKEBOX SHOW on Bayrak International.

To start the ball rolling, here are some of mine:-

Male singer - Bobby Darin

Female Singer - Brenda Lee

Rock 'n' Roll singer - Charlie Gracie

Favourite vocal group - The Drifters

Favourite instrumental band - The Shadows

Favourite Bands - Mike & Mechanics - Dire Straits - Queen

Favourite songs - 'The Living Years' - 'Fabulous' - 'Fever'

Hey Branwell - you mention some great names there, especially that of Clyde Mcphatter who was a founder member of the great Drifters group, and aslo Louis Jordan & his Tympany Five who were great swing and R&B band of the late 1940's and the 1950's. I played one of his big hits on the JUKEBOX SHOW last week called "Saturday Night Fish Fry". I have to say though that I've never heard of the Taj Mahal band.

Will play some of those records each week starting from the 27th October (all the shows before that have already been pre-recorded).

Come on folks, surely there must be more of you who have favourite singers and/or songs you'd like to hear played on the radio.

Hi Mike

Try http://www.tajblues.com -he's an absolute legend! (Idolised by, amongst others, Kenny Neal and Mitch Woods)

Branwell

PS Louis Jordan had a massive impact on black music -BB King, James Brown, Ike Turner all worshipped him and with classics like 'Let The Good Times Roll', 'Is you is or is you ain't my baby?' 'Early in the Morning' and, as you mentioned, '..Fish Fry..', it's no wonder.

Hey Branwell - I loved the music when I opened that site up. The dobro guitar music just bounced out at me. Although it wasn't Bluegrass music it had the feeling of it slightly, and I have to say I love love Bluegrass - especially that of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs.

Will download some of Taj Mahal's music and give it a coat of listening to.

Yes, he's the 'father-figure' of the whole US blues scene ...he plays a whole range of bluesy music ...country blues through to Stax Soul ...he's been going since the early 70s ...top man!

Hi Max - yeah Marvin Gaye, one of, if not theeeeeeee, best of Motown singers. I know your Motown and Soul selection and your knowledge of it is vast - also your Northern Soul knowledge.

I am hoping though, that people who have favourite singers and songs somewhat different from Motown & Soul, will post their choices on the board as well.

Come on folks, where are all the Sinatra - D.Martin - Beatles era - Disco era - Big Band - Blues - Jazz - Folk - Rock 'n' Roll - Orchestral - Rhythm & Blues and other styles of music fans out there. If you want songs that you haven't heard in a long while played on the radio, then let's be hearing from you.

Male singer - Frank (if you have to ask you are not old enough), Robbie - if you are too old you won't understand

Female Singer - Eva Cassidy - tingles up the spine every time.

Rock 'n' Roll singer - Rod Stewart, full of grit. Sting, great vocals and lyrics, Van Morrison, a maestro

Favourite vocal group - Beatles - grew up listening and recently revisited their back catalogue, outstanding.

Favourite instrumental band - Pink Floyd (OK some vocals but it's the instrumentation I love)

Favourite Bands - Yes - Dire Straits - Pink Floyd - Queen - Yes - Stackridge

Favourite songs - Shine on you crazy diamond - just put the bins on and float down stream

Keep them singers names and songs coming in folks - I will play a few each week on the show starting from the 27th October.

Thanks for those choices GROUCHO - wouldn't call Rod and Van Morrison Rock 'n' Roll singers - more like Rock singers. I always associate the term Rock 'n' Roll with the 1950's style of music - Elvis - Bill Haley - Jerry Lee - Chuck Berry - Buddy Holly etc; and even the early 50's style from the Penguins - Louis Prima - Louis Jordan - Ruth Brown etc. Still, you have some great names there, especially that of Eva Cassidy, who never received the same acclaim when she was still alive and Pink Floyd, who as you say, were great at instrumentation. Their best selling single for example, 'ALBATROSS', is for me, probably the best guitar instrumental ever made.

Thanks MartinD41 - will play songs from some of those artists each week.

Are there any Jazz, Blues and Folk fans out there - let's be hearing your choices as well.

Did anyone spot my mistake in message16 - I got that one totally wrong - it was of course Fleetwood Mac who had a massive hit with ALBATROSS and not Pink Floyd. Old age is creeping up fast folks.

Do you know No1Doyen - the times that people have told me that their Mother was one of their favourite singers - I couldn't count them on my fingers and toes.

Your choice of SEAL is very good. One of the best of the modern British Soul and R&B singers. I have played him a few times on the show in recent months.

DJ MIKE. I've listened to your show. Brilliant.

My Mum was a professional operatic singer. She was brilliant. I remember going to see her perform when I was 6 or 7 years old. Her rendition of Ave Marie is superb. It'll definitely be played at my funeral as it was her's.

Hi folks, thanks for all the singers and songs that you all would like to hear - I have got so many now it will take me quite a good while to play them on future shows. But keep them coming in. I will try and play as many as can on each show, but will have to leave room for other types of music because as most of you regular listeners know, I try to play music for most tastes. I do stipulate most and not all tastes. My programme is pre-recorded and only lasts an hour on Sunday mornings and I usually average between 15 and 17 songs on the show, depending on the length of the tracks.

Where are all those music lovers who like Jazz - R&B - Folk - Blues - Skiffle - and the American style, nostalgia pop music. Come on folks, send in your favourites as well.

Hi PaulW - like you, I did my time as a Firefighter (now retired). I am surprised you didn't put down 'Fire Brigade' from the Move in your list. Will put your choices in the list to play.

Yours also 'Glabury' have gone down on the list.

Still no Jazz - R&B - Skiffle - and very few American nostalgia numbers as yet.

Hey folks, someone sent me some Jazz artists name in - thanks for those choices joandjelly, some great names there - Stan Getz who produced some fantastic 'cool jazz' sounds - Astrid Gilberto who often sang with Getz down the years and Nina Simone, who sang everything - and that includes classical - R&B - Blues - Jazz - Gospel - Folk and Pop music.

Spider, where did you come up with that name - Melba Moore - it's a long time since I've heard of her - apparently she is still on the road touring in the USA. Although not mainstream, she has had many hits in the US R&B charts down the years.

Will play some of those artists for you, but it will be in a show sometime after Otober 24th as I have already got that show sorted out.

For all those others who have sent names in - keep on listening to the show - I will get round to playing and mentioning your names - but with so many songs it will take a while to get round to them.

Keep on sending your favourites in folks'

Hi Groucho - re-message 13 - I would love to play 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', but it's just not feasible. That is one of Pink Floyds best tracks - and a favourite of mine also, but, it is in nine parts, and even the radio version is nearly 11 minutes long. As my show only lasts I hour, you can see that it is just not feasible time-wise. If my show was a couple of hours long, then I would definately play it.

Sorry about that Groucho - but a lot of your other suggestions will be played on the 24th.

Anybody else wanting requests, then just post them here.

Hi joandjelly - message 37 - although I had heard of Chet Baker I hadn't heard of any of his music - which is surprising really, because I do like 'cool jazz' - especially Dave Brubeck - Miles Davis - Gillespie and Mulligan etc. I downloaded an album and I think his trumpet playing is fabulous. Will play you one of his tracks, but not - 'Over The Rainbow'. The only copy of that track I could find after searching through the internet, is very nearly 16 minutes long, and that, realistically, in a one hour show wouldn't go down well.

Will try and play it on either the 31st March or 7th April.

Come on folks - keep sending in them requests.

You'll know Solomon Burke died last weekend aged 70 ....perhaps his original, superior, version of 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love' would be a fitting tribute

Hi Branwell - no I didn't know that Solomon Burke had died last weekend. Was it broadcast on the news. He didn't have any top ten hits in the Open US main charts, but he did have a few in the US R&B charts down the years, including one that topped that chart. He was another good singer who started out on the Gospel Highway circuit during the 1950's. I haven't got that particular song but I will download it (if I can) and play it on one of the shows.

No1doyen - I played that song, 'Fire Brigade' on my show just a few weeks ago for Vaughan Turney - the ex radio Caroline DJ who has a holiday home out here.

Hi Scruffdog - will Play 'Wheels On Fire', but you will have to wait a week or two. Will play some Pink Floyd over the next few weeks - but not 'Dark Side Of The Moon'. It is too long to go on a one hour show. Got 'Another Brick In The Wall' lined up for the show on the 24th Oct.

Hi Blackbird - will certainly play some Queen songs - one track going out on the 24th Oct. I haven't personally got any Paul Rogers (Free) or Bad Company tracks. I will have a look on the Net.

Hi jimchris09 - message 52 - some good artists you've picked out there - will play a few of those, but like one or two who have replied, you may have to wait a week or two as I have already scripted three show in advance. They will get played, I promise you. The Flying Pickets - not many people ask me for their music - even at my live disco shows. I did play their 'Only You' in August and I only have that song by them. Will try and download another. Problem is now, with all these requests, I have lot's of downloading to do.

As you and other people have said - you could go on forever naming singers and songs.

Hi Scruffdog - I have never come in from the cold re- Pink Floyd. I have always loved their music - my favourite of all their albums is 'MEDDLE'. I just love the instrumental music in it. Like most people, I have very wide taste in music which does include some heavy rock. The big problem with a lot of rock bands is that quite a lot of the tracks they play are quite long and unsuitable for shows like mine which are only an hour long. If my show was 2 to 3 hours long then that would be a different thing.

I am also a big fan of synthesizer music and love - Tangerine Dream - Vangelis - Mike Oldfield and Jean Michel Jarre, but again, most of their music is too long for the show.

Keep the tracks coming in folks - are there any country music lovers out there.

Hi jimchris09 - those favourite songs of yours - have you got any particular singers you want singing them or just by anybody I come up with. Let me know.

Hi Pammick

You'll know the song, though -The Rolling Stones featured it on their second LP and the Blues Brothers made an absolute b*gger of it in their first film

Pammick...ta v much for comments. Hope you can spread the word by playing the Pickets, Acoustic Alchemy and Jeff Beck...Jeff's "Brush With the Blues" off his last album is outstanding! Shame that most people only think of Hi Ho Silver Lining which was 43 years ago!

Hi jimchris09 - I have the Ella song, but none of the others. Will have to download them. I wouldn't have known the 'Led Zeppelin' or the 'Yes' songs if you hadn't sent this post.

Many thanks - DJ MIKE

Hi decandyl - message 27 - Dean Freidman, I,ve never heard of him before. I looked him up on Wikipedia and he doesn't seem to have done much at all. I have gone on to download sites, but not one of the sites I have visited have any of his music. More info needed.

Pick some more singers/songs and I will play them for you (providing they are not too obscure).

Thanks,

DJ MIKE
