The hand held speed camara was arounnd long before the statics were ever installed. Penalty used to be 90ytl to your local nicks benevolent fund.

I was clocked by a handheld on the Lefkosia to Famagusta Road. They said I was doing 170km/h. I had to laugh. But that's what they put on the ticket.

Went to Lefkosia Police Station and they were adamant that I pay the 360YTL fine and lose my licence for 12 months.

I argued and argued that I couldn't be driving that fast. They were having none of it. So I told them to take me to court.

Then someone actually read the ticket. It showed the vehicle I was driving was a 1.3ltr Mazda Demio Automatic. Foot to the floor and going down a steep hill it would barely make 150km/h and then it would have blown the engine as the top speed is only 120km/h. So 170km/h was totally out of the question. They finally agreed to wave it.

Just wish they'd taken it further. Would love to have seen that one in the papers. So don't always trust hand held cameras.

Hi everyone, I was clocked doing 73 in a 50 in edremit. £142 lira fine and a nightmare waste of time over three days to settle the bill. Don't speed.

John.

I went through the one on the Famagusta that is after the bridge/Ercan turnoff

I was on my way to the Bayermudu crossing. When I got there and they accessed

the computer to go through the crossing they said I had been caught speeding -

but not as fast as they said. I paid up.

It takes perhaps 8 years to get a telephone line here - the electronic wizadry

clocked me and was accessible to all border crossing computer terminals within

about 20 minutes. Very impressive, a service to be proud of.

Course the ones in the ROC don't work. ha. ha.

Mick,

I had that in mainland Turkey when I was told I had a fine to pay before leaving the country. No question of corroboration, seeing the evidence or anything a proper justice system would insist on.

we stayed at turtlebay village last month and i was shocked by finding a police car and two coppers doing a road block every night at the entrance to the site they park their car at the barrier and one holds the radar gun the other pulls you over, if you get pulled you get beatherlized aswell! they got used to seeing my car because we were staying at TBV so we got just a wave and a wink. went to a barbecue at sweetwaterbay a couple of nights before we returned from holliday and was talking to a ex army guy now living in NC and he said its the latest government ploy to get some cash in ! so be warned regards andrew

Have said this before, but a warning to those in a rental car.

If you crash a speed camera the paperwork is sent to rental company. They have your passport details etc and hand them to the police.

Next time you enter the country the fine is waiting for you. The rental company do not pay. The wait in immigration is for the check of such items on computer not a deliberate measure to annoy you.

So just because you have a rental car you can not avoid the speed cameras

I did three trials and got three aquittals all on hand held radars on all sorts of technicalities. Now I have five tickets with the fixed cameras, each 20 points. I am waiting for court summonses if they will ever come
