Full permissions have not yet been granted for work to start on the marina - the project owner is doing his damndest to move things along, but...

Monuments and Antiquities, Mins of Transport and Culture and Tourism, Prime Ministers Office and the Presidency can't agree, a very un-joined up (sic)Government!

The develpoment of housing and other attendant facilities at the site are under construction, but NOT the marina itself, and it may never come to fruition.

Suggest you don't buy or invest on the basis of being close to the proposed first international standard marina in North Cyprus - sadly, it may never come off. Government sponsored marinas at other locations, which are in the planning stages, will probably be built without any hassle! Cynical? Yes!!

I spoke to the Little Villa Co.

They stated that work was to commence in October on the new Marina.

Understandably, the Little Villa Co are trying to sell properties.

But they are completely wrong about Port Cyprium Marina.

If they have solid evidence that the project has received full approval from all Governmental Ministries or Departments, then perhaps they could share it with us.

To repeat - the Marina part of the project has NOT been approved. To buy or sell on the basis that it has been is respectively criminal and folly, at the moment.

Be advised that as soon as the Marina is given the go ahead and construction starts on the breakwater, for example, the project owner will announce it to the world in a great display of publicity - can't wait. Untill then, be cautious.

To say you are to start a project in TRNC is one thing .... actually starting is another .... and finishing ..well that a whole different topic altogether!

Chick-A-Dee

How right you are, especially re the finishing. Always worrying to read peoples gushing comments about their builders and how they expected delays in their property being built 'it's the Cyprus way' and how they are being kept in touch by their estate agents that it's ok re no builders on site for months.

I heard the new underwater pipeline from Turkey was coming ashore at the new marina and they would both be ready at the same time. Oh! And Gecitkale airport would be employing 10,000 people by then as well.

Simma its todays date on the marina web site so one must assume that it is up to date and when the breakwater problem is sorted, it is staying on the original site.

Bilko what a doom and gloom merchant you are ! Are you talking to someone in the know or is this just your opinion ?(which are like arseholes, everybodys got one)

Regarding buying property near the proposed marina site, there are hundreds of people, myself included who have bought on crystal bay marina, cbm 2 and proposed villas in the location with just that intention. Firstly as an investment and secondly its near a focal point where people can meet and be happy ! although i bet you would find it hard !

The breakwater has not yet started to be installed. The problem is with one land based historical site and the possibility of underwater artefacts yet to be discovered.

Doom mercghant! Hardly, just trying to guide potential buyers towards making an informed decision.

Never thought foul language added to any form of discussion, but if you hail from the East Mids former steel town, (as your name suggests) that would be difficult for you to understand.

Hope you enjoy your purchase and that you enjoy the TRNC as thousands do, sadly many have invested unwisely, or on the basis of false information and are now suffering the consequences, hope you're not one of them.

Would love to meet a fellow Northamptononian for a glass at The Port Cyprium Marina, but when? Nobody knows, but if you want to keep up to date on progress, rather than slagging off well meant information you may want to check the officail TRNC Gazette - there is an English translation.

No1 Doyen The man to ask i am led to believe is Paul at the little villa company regards the building of the new hotel and housing around the "new port cyprium marina"

Bilko yes i would love to have a glass of wine or two with yourself and the good lady.

I agree things are not going as fast as i and plenty others would like but they have started to put the infastructure in, which suggest things are going to happen.

Yes i have bought , 2 in fact on the basis that the marina will go ahead. If it does i think i will be quids in, if it does not i have 2 nice apartments in the north of cyprus.

And when cyprus unites, prices will treble ! but thats another issue !!

The project is being managed by the private individual who owns much of the site, supported by solid UK based investors.

As has been widely published in the local TRNC media, he is a British educated and university engineering degree holder, Altan Hussyien, one of his parents, perhaps his father, is a Turkish Cypriot.

Altan has wide international experience of such major infrastructure projects - if anyone can bring it off he can, (he is also a qualified yachtie) but, as he readily confirms - there is no permission to proceed with the Marina yet.

To all that are interested in marinas etc

There is also a new marina being constructed now just a little way east along the north coast of Cyprus on the Karpaz. This marina is going to berth upto 330 yachts, and there will be an upmarket resort surronding it of 2 five star Hotels, and restaurants.

Construction is well under way, and for anyone visiting the lovely Karpaz, you will see this marina just minutes after the Malibu Hotel on the left.

Hurry up Port Cyprium Marina - you are desperately needed!

British yachtsman falls prey to Greek wreckers

Yansa, a 65ft historic schooner owned by 59-year-old British yachtsman Mark Walker, lies in shallow water on the western side of the isle of Zakynthos, after what Mark believes is a deliberate attempt to wreck the boat by parties interested in claiming it for themselves.

Mark, who charters out his boat, which has cost him E175,000 and four years of work to restore to pristine condition, sailed to the Greek island from Ibiza at the beginning of June. He’d been there nearly a month when, on 7 July, the 48-hour forecast predicted heavy winds. On 9 July, the gale force winds arrived while Mark was on board Yansa at a swinging mooring. As the wind strengthened, the anchor started to drag, and Mark noticed that the pink pick-up buoy was missing.

With his boat being blown ashore, Mark decided to start the engines. Both batteries however, a year old and generally reliable, refused to start. Mark jumped in the 5hp inflatable in an attempt to tow the boat’s bows into the wind. For three and a half hours this struggle continued in the broad sunlight of a Greek afternoon, while Mark phoned two British ex-pat yachtsmen, waved frantically at local fishermen for a tow, and phoned local boat operators and the local ferry. All refused to help. The wind increased and Yansa was blown onto the sandy beach where she grounded in shallow water. Sand forced into the seams sprung two planks in as little as two days.

In an effort to prevent pollution from engine oil, and to stop water ingress, Mark stuffed wadding into the engine exhaust and convinced Coast Guard to let him tackle the problem. The next day, he discovered the wadding had been removed and the metal cover on the exhaust pipe hacked off. Shortly after that, a man claiming to represent local mayor Ioannis Pettas offered Mark E5,000 to walk away from his boat, which was being ransacked every night and is now rapidly becoming a wreck. “It was made clear to me,” alleges Mark, “that everyone was waiting for me to give up and then fight over who got the boat.” As things escalated, a local seen talking to Mark was attacked in the street in one incident. Owner of a local restaurant and fishing boat, he was one of the many that stood off on the fateful day the ship was blown ashore.

Mark has now found a mobile crane operator to lift the boat from the water, but has run out of money and cannot afford the E7,000 required. On his last day on the island of Zakynthos, Mark remembered the anchor tripping line. His crewmate, Andy Dickenson, who sorted out the tangle after the incident, remembers that it had been cut cleanly with a knife.

The mayor, who refused a meeting with Mark, was unavailable for comment as we went to press. The police department, which, Mark alleges has been less than helpful, was unwilling to comment to CB. Mark is now in London awaiting developments and raising funds to fly out to check on his boat. He has since received threats, secondhand through three individual Greek friends, that the wreckers will burn Mark’s boat if he continues in his attempts to rescue it.

If you can offer Mark any assistance, please contact the news editor at Classic Boat, Steffan Hughes. Tel: 44 208 726 8126, E: steffan_hughes@ipcmedia.com

This is the headline and the first couple of paragraphs on the front page of CT.

Green Light for Marina

Plans for a £12million private marina at Kucuk Erenkoy look set to go ahead after the Supreme Council of Monuments gave its backing to the scheme.

The Council had thwarted two previous applications for the Port Cyprium project, because of the historic nature of the area and the need to protect its archaeology.

Developer Altan Huseyin is delighted at the change of heart, after leasing the area in 2005 for a 49-year period. He had threatened to sue the government if he had not been granted permission for the scheme to start.

He told Cyprus Today work would start early in 2009, by which time the final design could be decided upon and permissions needed to start construction won.

... "The decision will be published in the Official Gazette next week", Mr Huseyin said.

So in actual fact, whilst they have given the green light to go ahead, the developer still needs to apply for permission to build. Does this mean it could still be thwarted?

"And when cyprus unites, prices will treble ! but thats another issue !! "

Sorry to disappoint, but that might never happen, the road to unification might not be so smooth as some say.

Going by the banking situation,

think the days of making money like that on property and lending is well gone.

To all those thinking of buying, do it on the basis of its a nice place to live, and not on tripling your investment. You wont then be disappointed.

There is no reason why prices in Bogaz should suddenly jump to twice that of prices in Paphos with unification.

I hope the Marina does go ahead as should bring revenue from foreign boatowners and put trnc and give a much needed boost to tourism.

Thanks to all about best wishes re marina

The announcement will be in the official gazette next week.

For all you information regarding the antiquities site, extensive surveys have been carried out by divers overseen by the antiquities department and nothing was found, but to appease the department the main breakwater will be moved.

With this in mind new feasability studies need to be carried out for the marina, and then it will go out to competitive tender, of course this will take a little time so we dont anticipate constructing the breakwaters until the new year.

Also i noted that many of you want to know who will be building the hotel and other buildings, again this needs to be submiited to the planning department for approval, we are told as long as it is submiited within all construction laws there will be no further delays, this again will go out to competitive tender.

The Government of the TRNC have given their full support to this project and we thank them for it.

For full information please do not hesitate to visit us at the little villa company, info from the horses mouth is better than all the negative rumours we have heard in the last couple of years. you are all welcome. Richard
