We've just been "done " by the olive pickers, an extended Cypriot family of ten, and lovely people they are too.



However we think there is some sort of gene deficiency that runs in the family, (and has maybe translated itself to other Cypriot families too).



We have realised that the way they shout at each other they must be deaf ! Are there no hearing aid centres for these poor people in Northern Cyprus? Are ex pats able to help and bring some hearing aids over ?



We found when they'd gone we were shouting too.

This is a common trait amongst the peasant population of many countries - exacerbated in Cyprus by centuries of inbreeding.

I have experience in people with hearing problems (if that is what it is) - but I fly off to london on 17th for a few days but will return. Problem is my turkish is rubbish but my knowledge of people with disabilities may compensate.

A friend of ours has said that it's because the Cypriots who originally came from the south were all farmers and had to shout over the valleys to make themselves heard.



It may be true, or it may be that they all have strong lungs...

You are so right about Turkish people shouting - you should try being there when we visit my hubby's Mum in Iskenderun - the decibel level goes off the scales
