I really dont want to spoil the surprise by naming the actual songs.....but it will be an evening to suit all tastes.

I will be speaking to Anna in a bit, so will ask her if she wants to post a few examples on here.

Re the Anna and Jonnie show and the posting of paulgeordie where he advises of an admission fee of 10ytl and infers this is normal.

We have been eating out in Northern Cyprus for over twenty years and have never ever been charged a premium for entertainment.

I agree. I don't want to sound rude but they are just pub singers. Surely the venue should pay them and then obtain their revenue via meal/bar sales?

What if someone usually goes to that venue on a Sat, just for a drink (not because they want to see/listen to Jonnie and Anna)? Do they still have to pay? If so, I think people will go somewhere else.

I must say I have to agree, it matters not how good they are if the place attracts extra punters then it must be down to the bar owner to pay for the act.

Elliecy, I don't know if you have ever heard either of these guys, but they are far more than pub singers. I think 10 ytl is nothing for the quality of entertainment people are going to get. Yes, there are "free" acts around but not like this one. I don't see it as unreasonable to charge folks a very small amount for something so good.

If they are better than pub singers then why are they singing in pubs?

I agree that 10ytl is a bit excessive especially if they are going to have diners that night.

If they are charging money then I am sure they must have the necessary permits in place

Both these performers frequently play in bigger venues (hotels, charity concerts, music clubs, beach clubs etc) - but that doesn't mean they can't take their show to smaller venues like local pubs. For some folks travelling into Girne or paying for hotel shows is really not practical, so this makes a good, different, one-off night out more accessible.

yes Kitty i agree, it is nice to have a one off night in a local area. However a lot of people would usually just be going out for a drink on Saturday night, but because this entertainment is on and they plan on spending the evening there instead of popping in for a drink, a lot will choose to eat also, a group of 6 friends on one table, that adds 60ytl to your dinner bill, now that is just a bit excessive.

They are bith very vry good entertainers it's not the ammout 5.10 or 15 ytl and yes they do have the right permits.

I feel sure it should be down to any venue to pay for performers, what next pay extra for the chef as he specialises in " true cypriot cuisine " ?

Having said this we will go enjoy it pay our ytl .

Two LEGAL entertainers who pay tax and social security, unlike many peolple here, do months of rehearsal to put together a fantastic show. They approach venues asking if they are interested in hosting their show. They tell the venues they do not want to be paid by said venue but instead will charge a fee on door. Now for those LEGALLY working members of the board, you will know how much tax and social security costs so when Anna & Jonnie have split their 10YTL paid their tax and social security, I think you can work out for yourselves there is not much going into their pocket after months of work to bring you guys some different entertainment!!!!

If you don't think it's worth it.....don't go.....and when all your good "pub singers" go South, think what it will cost you then for a good night out!!

Now, if the venues want to use the money they would usually pay to performers to put on a free buffet or give a free drink instead.......that is their choice!!!

But please do not tarnish what is going to be a fantastic show with idle bickering.

I'd gladly pay 10ytl just to see Anna. She is an excellent singer and a great entertainer. I haven't heard of Jonnie but if Anna has teamed with him he must be good.

Here in Northern Ireland we pay £10-£15 entrance fee, even for disco's. So for quality live entertainment 10ytl is a snip.

Nige,

Firstly, I am not a lad but a lass.

Secondly, I am not trying to stifle debate....just trying to stop nonsense talk when people are talking about things they know nothing about.

Thirdly, yes 600YTL is good bunce but I am afraid your summising would be wrong on this occasion. There are many things to take into account, i.e. advertising, backdrops, lighting, sound & light man.....all been paid or to be paid for. As well as months of rehearsal that equated into an hourly rate would not be much.

Equate the hours worked into the end profit and I'm sure you would find it is not as profitable as say for instance 1 illegal taxi run.

I will be more than happy to discuss this further with you on Saturday as I will be attending....loser buys the drinks....lol.

Regards,

Marion

10ytl charge on top of your meal/drinks is just to much, why not start charging for waiter/waitress or maybe car parking, is not your mark up of100% not enough for you, local people just vote with your feet.

For Gods sake, if you don't want to pay 10ytl then don't go, it's as simple as that. I hope you old moaney fogeys don't go anyway. You'll probably be moaning that its too noisey and your hearing aids playing up and theres not enough room in the toilet to empty your colostomy bags blah blah blah. I think they've started playing bingo at Rosies why don't you go there it might be more suitable.

Big Jam

I have had the pleasure of both seeing Anna and Jonnie and agree that they are good entertainers.

I am glad to hear that they have the necessary permits, as am sure you are well aware there are many "entertainers" who do not, as well as those others who moonlight with pool cleaning, airport runs etc. Pissed me off greatly as I had to pay sigorta and taxes as well as put up $100,000 when I opened up my company. I do have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about it.

If people want to pay 10ytl a head to watch it then fair enough. Lets put it this way there was once such entertainer who I watched in TRNC who at his interval I got talking to him and finally asked how much he earned for the night, "150 lira came the reply"

"Here there's 50 if you piss off just now because your garbage" was what I wanted to say.

Anna and Jonnie are worth going to see, for the TRNC they are top class.

Who knows maybe the hosts for the evening will have a deal with thoses going for food with a set menu including the 10ytl for the act but thats a commercial decision that they would have to make.

Hello All.

I'm sorry if you're unhappy with our entrance fee for the show,

There are several reasons we decided to make a charge, Firstly, it has not been an easy season for any of the bars and restaurants, with the lack of tourists. we felt it would be unfair of us to stage a special show, at their expense. We hand picked the venues to suit the local community's, hence saving the need to travel.

If only 10 people turn up... we lose! It's a risk we are willing to take.

What our audience will see is a finished polished performance, (hopefully!)

please understand how much hard work, rehearsal and commitment goes into staging an event such as this.

It would be great to have your support, but if you feel we are asking too much, of course we will understand.

Anna

Having just logged on I have just read the various postings with some amusement.

For the record we have seen / heard Anna perform and accept she is competent, but by no means in the same class as many of the artists we have and continue to enjoy in northern cyprus.

Can I however refocus on my point which was:

I don't accept it is standard procedure for restaurants to charge an admission where enterainment is featured.

I think the point Elliecy, Nige, goonerstan and dougskud are trying to make is NOT that they don't like Anna or Jonnie etc, the point is about venues charging. We all know that when you run a business, there is competition and in order to obtain trade, many venues put on entertainment. As a result, they then hopefully attract customers who spend a bit of money and have a good evening. In this instance, they are wanting to attract customers who will spend the same money and they obtain the same revenues but at no cost to themselves. i.e its the customer who ends up paying (twice). For the bar, its win win - same entertainment, same custs, same revenue, no cost to them! Quite clever 'eh?!

I am amazed at this thread. I know that some are saying, "it's not the amount, it's the principle", but I ask, the principle of what.... These good people, the bars, restaurants and entertainers, are trying to make an HONEST living in the TRNC, abiding by the rules and paying taxes etc and for at least 3 hours entertainment, (not to mention rehersal time), some are complaining about having to pay £4.54 (10YTL) for this, so at £1.51 per hour some people feel they are being ripped off!!!! COME ON.

Dougskud, I see your point about having visited the TRNC over 20 years and never paid a premium for entertainment, but in the last year electricity alone has sky rocketed and venues simply are trying to make a living. Also, as I have been visiting here for the last 14 years, I must say the standard of entertainment has improved dramatically.

So what if I'm 9 years old? Is there an age limit on here? Actually I was 9 when I joined. Now I'm actually 9 3/4. I'm only pointing out the fact that when you get old and wrinkly alot of people turn in to moaney old whingers trying to dictate how people should run their businesses. If you don't want to pay it don't go! If nobody turns up then Johnny and Anna will have a rethink I guess. But again it's their business and they don't have to justify costs. I don't care if they've stayed at home having wild alcohol sex and drugs parties. That's what I wanna do when I get older. I think they're cool! I wish I had a mum and dad as cool as them. Anna, my dad asked if you're going to wear that skirt again with the split up the leg? I saw alot of you miserable old fogeys at that Ozankoy flower festival, moping around talking in Latin. God how boring was that! I was kicked out for practising my David Beckham goal kicks on the flower heads. Last week was better at that miniature train open day that that nice man had built in his garden, but again I was kicked out of that coz apparently you're not allowed to throw stones at the trains as you go past.

Dear Billy,

No, he's not - I think you're thinking of the other one (I know who you mean)!

I also forgot to add Kelvin - he's there too on a Weds.

p.s You might want to consider them for your 10th birthday party (assuming Mum and Dad let you have one of course).....!

Maddog - msg 26. Without getting in to the rest of it, yes I have seen them and they are both entertaining. That wasn't my point.

Now, where have I seen them both? Singing in the pubs in Lapta and Girne etc. So then, if someone sings in a pub, would that not make them.......... yes, you've got it - a pub singer???!!!!!

No1Doyen,

They both perform seperately during the week in lots of different venues....

Elliecy,

....in hotels, restauants and nightclubs as well as pubs, with backing tracks, accoustically and with full bands.

Cheers,

Marion

Anna & Jonnie,

Thank you for a fantastic evening of entertainment....it is safe to say everyone had a brilliant night.

I think I am correct in saying there were at least 3 or 4 standing ovations!!!!

Well done to you both, all the hard work paid off.

Next one at The Rooftop Bar opposite The Altinkaya Hotel on the Bellapais Road, Sat. 30th Aug.

Thankyou anna and jonnie for a fantastic night. True professionals (not just pub singers). May you both continue, and keep charging. Look forward to the rooftop.

Another great evening (6 Sept) at JK's from Anna and Johnny - worth every penny or even YTL!

I would like to ask the writer of the posting classing them as Pub singers - which pubs do they themselves frequent? Because none of the pubs I have ever visited have provided the class of entertainment that Anna and Johnny provide - we are lucky to have them here in the TRNC!

We saw Anna & jonnie at the Altinkaya Rooftop bar last week. Individually they are very good entertainers. However their 'double act' needs some work.I am sure that over the coming weeks as they duet more often they will be a very very good act. Certainly well worth the 10ytl

Yeah Jonny and Anna rock! They're so cool. And what I really like about this group is that they dont go round smacking people on the head with iron bars in there spare time.
