Freedom of speech is the defining mark of a civilised society, however are there some topics that are strictly taboo on a civilised forum and therefore should not be debated under any circumstances?

If it's a fun thread/post, tongue and cheek which goes off on a tangent still in a humorous way though cryptically diverse, (which not all may understand) so be it!

Bill, I was on hols in Egypt a few years back and was out for the evening with a few people I had met.

Garry Glitter ended up in the conversation. I argued the point that he would have not have ever been caught if it wasn't for a computer technician doing something illegal in the first place by looking at the information on his hard drive. The bloke had no right to look through his clients confidential pictures, accounts or whatever. It is unprofessional. As an ex owner of a computer shop any of my staff doing so would have been sacked on the spot.

I am not condoning what Garry Glitter has ever done and said so on the night. They all gave me dirty looks though as if I had done something wrong.

So sometimes certain subjects can be taboo.

If a little more tolerance were to be amongst every one, think most things could be debated.... when members start bantering some get their hackles up, then the thread is pulled, a lot of it if left would get back on track....

Rules on here don't mean much anyway, or it depends on who you are, Rule 7 is broken almost every day, again.

I feel that some subjects cannot be debated on a public forum, it is more likely that it would just become a war zone, issues such as child abuse, domestic violence, religious practice etc could bring out the worst in people resulting in the post being closed.

In an adult forum any topic should be debatable - I also don't believe in a forum being micro-managed......if you don't like what someone has posted, ignore it - bullies and polemicists need the oxygen of an hysterical response to feed the flames of their ignorance - ignore them and they eventually find another outlet or victim that engages or becomes a co-dependant in their need to spread or find misery........

Re message 16:

'were not school kids were adults'

It is just a shame that some 'adults' still do not know how to behave like adults.

The other thing to remember is that this is a family forum. And of course nobody reads the mission statement on the login page or reads the rules of the board. If we could sort out those 'minor' problems then there would no need for moderators.

This is an open forum, which means that children can access it. I believe we have to behave in a responsible manner. There are enough morons posting stupid things on here, is it not time we thought about our actions. Cyprus 44 is in the strange position that its popularity is its downfall. It is drawing people who seem to want to bring it down, for whatever reason.

Lets get back to being a forum that can discuss without insults, be supportive without belittling and still has a sense of humor without being smutty.

I know I have already mentioned the morons which my be insulting and belittling but there are a number of posters who are dragging this forum down, if we ignore their irrelevant posts they may get feed up and go away or hopefully banned for good.

I have posted this because I know to many good posters are getting feed up with the way things are going and do not post or even access 44. Let's get 44 back to being a good forum not a joke forum.

Unfortunately I lay the blame for a lot of he troubles on the board at the feet of certain mods, they ban some people for reasons like aggressive posts, yet others are allowed to do it frequently, some people use 'rude' words and dont get banned while others do, some are allowed to post continually about one or two places or people, yet others the minute they bring a certain subject or person up the topic gets closed or the person gets a ban, somebody once said on here that "topics should be allowed to develop and some of the substance should be watched as it will show up some of the posters as charlatans" some of the mods should try it.

Rowlo, why were you banned? surely you were not rude or used bad language.......highly unlike!

No subject is beyond discussing, so long as the persons views are debated and not ganged up on. Not so long ago I made what I considered to be an innocent remark and was painted out to be a racist. Sometimes it puts members off getting invoved due to a select few of sad people.

It is my opinion that all banned members should be named and the reason for it explained. Further more a life ban should mean the removal from the site and not a silly count down clock.

I agree naming and shaming should be tried out if the numbers reduce in being banned it shows that it has worked .

Cyprus 44 sets rules then allows posts that break them . So then the limits are then pushed to the limits .

I think you have to have some things not up for discussian such as topics that might offend the country we are posting in .

You really do not understand do you Rowlo.

All of the active 'mods' are part time and as such cannot monitor all threads and associated postings all of the time and if posters such as yourself just stopped and thought about what you were/are about to post and took a bit more of a responsible attitude towards the board then it would become a more civilised place to be. It is the posters that make or break the board nobody else.

dizzy

Let me explain to you what happens. All of the 'moderators' take time out to warn certain posters about their behaviour on the board, some have set up e-mail addresses specifically for joining the board and do not respond when sent an e-mail so after a week it is deemed that the member has an invalid e-mail address. So if we cannot contact a member then what should we do? Certainly not have a slagging match on the board because believe me that only adds to the problem. I have saved all of the abusive e-mails that I have had when I have politely requested certain members to desist from their trouble making antics and it will make interesting reading in the future. Believe me you have no idea what goes on and banning a member is a last option. Oh by the way just to prove my point, how many times have you seen me post '****** you have e-mail'?

AJ, I am not getting into an argument with you over this, as you well know I do not agree with any one being banned.

Perhaps its posts that should BE deleted if they become offensive.

Perhaps a 'delete this post or remark'needs to be added.

I am sorry that you get abusive emails, again a reason why a lot of members don't put up their email on here!

But to get back to the issue, all topics should be discussable, and perhaps the mods should not really get involved with a topic that they know other members want to discuss. To close a thread because the mod in question doesn't agree or thinks it unacceptable to them is just oppression as Rowlo says.
