It's hard to imagine what terrible things happened before and in 1974 - although the book "The Genocide Files" may give newcomers on the island a fairly good idea. Here's another picture from the UN Buffer Zone in Walled Nicosia. It shows the remains of trenches in just another garden of just another house where ordinary people lived their ordinary lives until all went wrong...

OMG Hans.. HOW MANY TIMES? Whilst this book is unquestionably a book that needs to be read -in the context of Cyprus - even YOU can acknowledge that this work could well have been a propaganda exercise.
