I hear, all to often about people moving to Northern Cyprus then complain about everything about it.

I would really like to know what was the reason for leaving your country in the first place, was it the weather, the crime rate, the foreigners, the lack of employment or what?

Because I was requested to take on a specialised assignment abroad and after that was completed and I changed employment I stayed where I was attached until my wife became pregnant and could no longer stay in the country legaly as she no longer had a work permit so we looked for the best country we could that was suitable for everything we both wanted and also allowed us to have a continued education of the same standard for our daughter, the fact that it is tax free for me is just a massive bonus. North Cyprus really does have a lot to offer if you are not looking for the UK in another country or a retirement area with good weather only.

The one thing we both knew was that after living away from outr own ciountries we had no intention of returning there unless we absolutely had to. In my case because it is a ruined country run by idiotic people that give no incentive for peole to return unless they are sick, unemployed, broke or a combination of those.

vonny, we weren't in the UK but the story is still true. We were in UAE and I without at least 1 person in the family having a work permit or owning a business you can't get residency. Even if the wife has a work permit she can only sponsor the husband if she holds a professional job ie Lawyer/doctor/teacher so when she lost hers for being pregnant (my fault entirely, I got drunk, tripped , and landed on top of the wife and the rest is history) and because I worked in a different country we couldn't stay unless I spent lots of money.

They think it is hard to do stuff in NC, the whole system is based on an antiquated British system but it can still be done. Friends of mine from certain other countries find it laughable when they read comments on here about the hardships, they think most of the posters on here are in their own little dream world and I am afrais all I can do is nod and agree.

Very good post though vonny, well I think so anyway

"why did i leave my country" ??

wished i never did............ Cyprus (especially the trnc) is so / massively over rated. Glad to be back in UK & now I can fly wherever I want rather than where i can get a connection at Istanbul. All Cyprus (TRNC) ever did for me was to re-inforce that the best country in the world is the UK. Didn't know it at the time but I do now.

Thank you proger1

donga, trnc is massively over rated? by whom? could only have been from other brits who had move over here, it wasnt that many years ago the trnc couldnt advertise in travel agents/estate agents in the uk. Also, saying the uk is the best country in the world,,,is it? if you could, would you ever think about moving to another country again but maybe doing things slightly different to the way you did it in Northern Cyprus?

Laptamike Msg 9

how long did you put up with the UK weather? Was it because you were making your living in the UK? Oh by the way the last government has gone! Are you happy with the government in the TRNC? Were you able to move to the TRNC because the UK had given you the opportunity to make a living and so be able to buy a property in the TRNC?

Just curious.

I left Uk because I was fed up of working 12 hours a day and getting nothing for it so, after 15 years of hard slogging I came here where I have been on holiday for 20 years and made a packet of money on real estate which I got over the years for peanuts, now worth 5 times the value of my property in Uk which I burned myself out working to pay off the mortgages. pheww what a relief !! Long live TRNC.

I holidayed in TRNC and liked what I saw, decided I wanted to live there. This decision was easy to make because of the state of the UK, with rising and unchecked crime, youth vandalism, lack of control of youth, stupid 'punishments' dished out by the courts, and the constant bowing and scraping to Islam and other ethnic peoples.

The weather, strangely you might think, had nothing to do with it.

i have to agree with kaiserphil,it was nothing to do with the weather,it was the whole system in the uk i got fed up with.My husband and i both worked hard, paid our taxes ect, knowing we were keeping the scroungers, because for most they can be better off claiming than they are working. How many times have you read the newspapers? Pensioner raped, murdered, beaten up in own home ,muggings robberies, child abuse.credit card cloning, How many bus shelters have been smashed to pieces, graffitti everywhere. How many drunks have you heard in the middle of the night, shouting, kicking cans in the street whilst you were in your bed. How many homes are reprosessed ,remember the endownment plan..you pay for 25yrs then your house is paid off and you get a lump sum back at the end, Huh, 25yrs later you still owed them, then theres the pension scams,,so many lost on that.I retired at 47,i go and do what ever i please,i dont feel threatened by anyone.TRNC has done pretty well for an unrecognised country

My reasons are so simmilar to Pauls, (Proger 1) work overseas, married a non EU national and we have no intention of settling in the UK or her home country, live mostly where my next contract is and when not working we are in TRNC it suits us and our circumstances....

I left UK in 1976 to work in Zambia as a teacher on a three year contract. Renewed for another 3 years and would have done so again if not for cutbacks in overseas aid (we were paid a UK supplement to our local Zambian Kwacha salary). Returned to UK for a year to try and find me roots again....totally disillusioned by the place in 1982/83. Saw the chance of a return to Africa as newly independent Zimbabwe required staff for the massive expansion in Secondary education for Africans. Stayed for 4 years until the local currency/salary (no supplement this time) meant that we couldn't survive there....blessing in disguise considering what happened later of course. Worked in a middle school in north Manchester from January to July 1988. This made me take a solemn vow to never, never ever consider teaching in the UK again! I've been working in Oman since then, enjoying every minute of it....especially since it has enabled me to buy in TRNC.

branwell, this is the 2nd post in as many minutes I have seen you criticise anothers post just for the fun of it.

Are you really one of these people who constantly tries to twist what they read in a way that makes it sound negative just so they can have a go. I only ask because it would allow me to avoid even bothering to read your posts if that is the case.

With regard to the statement made it was referring to the governments stance in the UK of trying to please everyone to the detrement of the original citizens and the muslim sympathies was used as an example. So in escence it was having a go at the government not the muslims so you turning into a religious statement was just lighting fires, we have enough missunderstandings on this forum without people forcing them to happen so please think about that before posting, just a genuine request.

i am a london turkish cypriot lived in the uk all my life and moved to north cyprus why ? well crime ,drugs ,robberies, sexual assaults and so on and believe me i have seen my fair share i am not slagging the uk off but its out of control as far as i can see . i do miss the british system in some ways for ex. the way of living and able to do things etc. i know n.cyprus has its faults will they change in time i doubt it very much some things will get better in time.at least in n.cyprus crime is low and 99 percent you will be caught . to live here is very expensive but i suppose we can't have it all that's life

I don't criticise 'for the fun of it' ...but I live in the UK -a multicultural society- which accepted my ancestors (Irish) and several other waves of immigrants (Italian, Polish, Ukranians, West Indians, Pakistanis, Indians ...etc..the nation is and always has been a 'mongrel nation' and is stronger for it. I don't need lessons on the history of the UK ...I'd be delighted, though, to discuss rationally how migration impacts on the development of any national culture.

Perhaps "for fun" was a poor choice of words but turning the complaint about bowing and scraping to islam and other minorities was never directed at the islamic people and you know it but you still tried to utilise it to raise an objection and sarcasm about moving to an Islam country., I am afrid that I don't find much rationality in doing that so would not believe a discussion would be any different.

Quarmby msg14, how or where we made our money is non of your business apart from to say very little of it was made in the UK due to the red tape brought in by THE LAST GOVERNMENT such as IR35.

"Oh by the way the last government has gone!", if you had read my post properly, I did say the LAST GOVERNMENT hence I am not talking about the current government.

I suggest you stop and think before you make any more foolish posts.

mate, I think they persecuted everyone who wanted to make a bit of money on their own. Look at all the 'jobs for the boys' they created. No wonder the UK is worse off than Greece.

Question is, who will the UK turn to when they have to ask for help, They are not pert of the Euro countries and refused to assist Greece so where will they go then, taxpayers ?

Britain has the 2nd highest debt in the world, can't turn to big brother America on this one, they are the highest in the world.

I have had some good answers so far,but i feel there is a lot of you that dont want to answer like its a taboo question, and those of you that want to return to your country do you really think you will be content after the life style you had here?would you beable to live as comfortable as you do here on your pension or would you need to find a job again which is really not easy with the high unemployment in the uk and please remember, you were not contented in the first place otherwise you would never of left it.

Well said again vonny however I would say that many people will never want to admit to themselves whether moving here was a better move than staying or if moving back is even a viable idea unless the house sales start to pick up again.

Yonny ,I came to the TRNC for the climate and house affordability, couldnt afford Portugal. One can move to or visit another country and not hate ones own country,so sorry to disappoint, need to look elswhere for a tirade about the British.

Proger

Members of my family moved to the UK generations ago and most of us even with its faults are glad of where we were brought up .I know people who will happily take your place and the passport you have given up, I presume you have TRNC nationality.

Its easy to sit at a later age and say how crap the UK is,without remembering our upbringing compared to others places in the world. We have to compare life from the day we were born, not from when we were wealthy enought to buy a villa.

There is only one type of britbasher I have respect for and that is one who rips up his passport and burns his bridges as far as coming back for NHS care etc ,all the rest are phonies.

girne29.please don't misunderstand, I dont ''hate'' Britain There are some things i actually miss there. what im trying to get across to people is-theres a certain number of folk that move to Cyprus ,then do nothing but complain about things. Im trying to say, well things were'nt that great in Britain and come on,you have to admit it. yes we may have had a good upbringing but that was back in the 50's-60's when the uk was so different from today. You said you bought a house here so surely you see that life here is so much safer

Girne29, I am not sure what you are basing your presumtions on, I have not given up my passport and never implied that I did, that is not to say that I wouldn't if I had the option to gain another one. You can't know everyones situation in life as it is obvious you don't know mine. I need a passport to travel and at the moment I have no official residency that is not the same as citizenship and ironically enough it is very, very difficult to even achieve non-citizenship status.

I understand what you are saying, if I am so anti-british I should indeed rip up my passport and up to a point you are correct however I fought for the country that I am using the passport from and that is all I am asking from them in return.

Having been raised between Australia and the UK I can comment on standards.

I am afraid your presumptions based on my comments are very far from the truth but it was impossible for you to know that.

My response is exactly the same as message 10. Love it here, can't think of a reason to go back to UK.

Been done over by the UK taxman and my UK bank, so the adnomalies here are no worse.

We just moved here from Spain after being lucky enough to sell out apartment there, and in the short time we have been here it is really nice, however it is so like Spain in some ways the Brits think they own the place instead of being visitors and these boards seem to be breeding places for their vitriol, shame really !!

We live in a lovely county in England but dreamed of having a little place in the sun when we retired, we retain a home there but Spain was ruined for us by the whingeing brits, please dont let it spoil this lovely little piece of heaven
