I know it sounds daft .. and i know we should all be doing our bit to save the planet, but is it just me that thinks that the energy saving lights are a really awful white, they do not give a 'nice warm glow'.

I have reverted ti suning very low voltage bulds, they are just as effiecint but give a much 'softer' and warm light ...

Re. message 2, regarding the apparent colour of Energy saving lamps.

There are usually two 'colour temperatures' available - Rather perversely, the higher the 'colour temperature', the 'colder' or 'more Blue -ish' the light appears.

Lower 'colour temperatures' appear 'warmer' (more red -ish), more like normal incandescent light bulbs.

Generally, the very miniature types (where the glass tubing is a narrower gauge than normal) are the higher 'colour temperatures', which is bad news if you are trying to replace physically small bulbs with Energy saving ones...

And by the way, (sorry, I'm in pedantic mode) I think that you meant 'very low WATTAGE' not VOLTAGE, otherwise there would be a very loud bang, followed by darkness. possibly accompanied by scrabbling noises and swearing...

Electrokur sell energy saving bulbs for a number of different fittings. As we were buying a whole house full of light fittings we bought all with these and haven't noticed any problem with the colour of the light.
