3 people saw a snake on the tile roof of my single storey extension. The cleaner has lived in Cyprus for a long time and identified it as a viper and the description given by the other 2 witnesses seem to support this. However, I find it hard to believe that a viper is the type of snake (an ambush predator rather than a hunter) that would climb onto the roof - presumably up the drainpipe - or move away as quickly as described by all 3. I am also sceptical because it seems to me that every snake seen in Cyprus is identified as a viper - especially if it is really a coin snake.

Can anyone confirm the likelihood or otherwise of this?

Plenty of snakes in black suits situated by the Girne Law Courts! Easily identifiable!

Official advise from the TRNC Government is: 1 : catch the snake and 2 : show the snake to the doctor after the snake has bitten you. So 3 : the doctor will know which antidote he has to give you. Sorry, Jovial John, you acted wrongly in this case.

DC

What are you blathering about???.

Please re-read my message (no. 1). Nobody was bitten, nobody took any action, I did not see the snake myself - I simply asked a question about the habits of the blunt-nosed viper.

How did I act wrongly ?????

I have seen a viper and a black snake both up a tree last year.

Usually they will be around water, thats what they need during the summer. So you should find them next to streams ect.

We saw one this year close to our wall, behind the wall is our neighbours water tank, which is leaking. Just let it go on its way. They can move very very fast so be carefull.

Thank you Blade - useful information at last. They climb trees so obviously could be on my roof - and they move fast if necessary. Maybe it was a viper.

We were warned years ago never to sit under trees for shade or shelter as snakes often hide in the trees
