Try downloading avast, another free anti virus (obviously when downloading the *free* home version)

http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

The fact that it's picked the virus up is good, do you not get the option to clean or quarantine?

Oxoners download the Avast antivirus first & then uninstall the AVG. You will find your computer loads a lot quicker.

Try start - programs -accesories-syestem restore choose a time prior to the problem. if no good you will need to reformat your computer and reinstal all programs. do not forget to save all personal files folders efc etc

is this what you have ??

http://www.jurgita.com/articles-id2306.html

SystemDefender is a rogue anti-spyware program released on September 21, 2007. SystemDefender usually makes its way to your computer via Trojans and browser security holes, but may also be downloaded and installed manually. When active, SystemDefender uses scare tactics, such as falsified scan reports and system notifications to get users to buy the full version. It may even load message "Your privacy is in danger. Download privacy protection software now" instead of desktop wallpaper in order to scare people.

SystemDefender is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it, if you have it - remove it and block SystemDefender's domain using your HOSTS file.

this may help http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-systemdefender.html

Not sure if this will help but I downloaded Avast, once it was installed I then deleted AVG. Ran a scan with Avast and it got rid of whatever was infecting my lap top, all is well now.

Hi Kimosh

I think part of your problem could be that you are still in safe mode. Try re-booting into normal mode and see if you can gain access to internet as normal. Go into control panel and remove programme. Remove your current Anti Virus then go to the Avast site and try downloading the software. Put it somewhere where you'll be able to find it easy ie. Desktop. Install and tell it to do a complete scan on start up. If you have anything on the system it'll find it. Depending on how much you have on your hard drive it could take up to 2 hours to complete.

Good Luck

Karen

COACHIE,

Re. message 42

the warning circulating re 'Hallmark' is a hoax, it's been doing the rounds for ages.

Having said that, if you open any mail that you don't know what it is, or visit any website that is less than reputable, you run a risk.

I guesss we all run a risk in getting out of bed in the morning anyway, so "you pays your money, and..."

Important thing to remember here folks, "partition your hard drive", that way you can keep all your operating system and applications on the c: but all your documents, pictures etc on another partition, also if your operating system partition ever becomes corrupt, you can till use other partitions, i.e. the whole disk is not scrap and all your data lost.

You can also then re-format and re-install your software etc, without affecting or loosing data/pics.

Not a 5 minute job if your are not computer minded, but if you ever upgrade, ask the supplier to partition the drive for you.

Good advice about partitioning the gard drive brian24001.

Also do not download and install anything that you are not 100% sure about.

Most virus , spyware malware and rootkit are installed by users that click on stuff that looks like they are either interesting or a free software substituting another product.

Do not open any attachments that you are not sure of what it is.

KeithCaley..I was not aware of that Hallmark being a hoax..My daughters tend to "look" after me cos I am a novice on these machines, therefore any info of that nature I will naturally pass on to others just incase it was a serious threat.

coachie,

the warning signs for any hoax are that the source claims to be one of the security comanies who never send out emails like this. They do upgrade their application and you as a subscriber download the upgrade automatically

Here's some more clues

I've noticed that emails and BB posts that have been passed on as warnings of impending doom are generally a hoax or spam chain letters..... i.e. they try and get you to pass on this information without checking it out first.. They prey on your desire to be the first to warn all your friends

Some even include supposed quotes from Security/Virus companies to try and make it seem as though there is no need for you to check it out yourself..... e.g. "WARNING from Symantec, new virus that is very destructive" blah blah blah...

Ones that tell you to pass it on to n friends are invariably tosh, attempting to cause chaos.

For each warning you get you would do well to visit the Norton or Symantec or McAffee sites and see if they know anything about the veracity or otherwise of the threat... if they don't, you can bet your bottom dollar that it does not exist, but if they do they may well be able to put your mind at rest by confirming that it is indeed a hoax and poses no threat whatsoever before you pass on the info only to find you are the innocent victim of the hoax, no-one likes to look like a nonce.

The hoaxes out-number real viruses by quite a large factor and this gets exponential when we start emailing the info on.

They are the "work" those annoying little bedsitter-twerps (invariably spotty boys - girls have better things to do with the time, like washing themselves) with nothing better to do than cause panic so that they can sit back and wait for one of their "friends" to pass it back to them just for the kudos of being able to say "See that, I did that!"

Groucho..many thanks for the run down on these hoaxes.I have Norton 360 and acouple of other anti virus sustems on here and so far so good, but I shalldo what you recaomend as far as checking it out. Once again many thanks...
