4 puddings for 25TL???? That would work out at 6.25TL each!!! Shock, horror at todays rate that means they would be £2.79 per pie as opposed to £45.62 each if you had to go back to the UK to collect them. Added on the airfare to the original cost of the 4 pies at 62 pence each!

Sounds like another bargain to be had at Bell Foods then!

LordJim,

All imports are a rip off. It's not just the extra miles they are travelling but the taxes that are added by the government upon entry. Another example is new cars...upto 40% mark up buying the same vehicle on the British High Street.

No one is twisting your arm to buy them. Leave them alone. When the sell by date is close, the price will drop. But if everyone waited for the price to drop then Bells would soon go bust as they can't make a profit.

When I was in the TRNC my kids always wanted the 'Iceland' foods that were available. All nicely price splashed, although many times stickers were put over the UK price, but we knew we were paying 4 times the rate of buying them in the UK, so, on the whole, we avoided them except for specail occasions.

Spot on waddo - if you don't like then don't buy. It is probably a fair reflection of the cost of importing and then keeping frozen in Cyprus temperatures. But some don't mind paying for a bit of the Old Country and Bells at least gives them the chance. Personally I have a soft spot for a Soreen Malt Loaf - a hell of a lot more expensive than UK but then I don't have to nuy.

whats wrong with doing it for yourslef. Malt loaf easy peasy.....recipies can be found on the net..... I have and always will do things for us..... When our kids we little we made jams, wine, pickles. All the pies etc. Sorry its not for everyone but at those prices I think I would have a go. On the other hand some people do not have to thin k about the cost and they are fortunate to be in that position. We saw a Turkey crown in Bells for 97 tl We will be having a chicken Sue.......

Dont see a problem in Bells pricing structure. Its up to the individual to decide what they want to overpay for.

I buy the Daily Mail every Tuesday @ 5tl when its 50p in the UK.....my choice, and its good to have the option.

Tootie - don't know the price, personally, but I'll bet they're more expensive than they are at Asda

RE msg 17, NCMan: (...) I sometimes wonder why a lot of you are here. !!! (...)

=> NCMan, I enjoy every day in Northern Cyprus thoroughly - the days are too short to do and see all I want! Whinging and worrying about prices at Bell's (nor anywhere else) are not my way of life. Buy or don't buy - it's that easy.

How can you compare TRNC prices with ASDA when they are not even here. We all know here - or should do by now - that if you want specific brands / items we pay more for them here. Individual choice as to what you want / willing to pay!

BTW - Lidl / aldi / tesco have great deals on just now if you can order on line - free delivery as well!

Spoke to a mate of mine in UK just now and can get efes for £2.05 for 50cl bottle in a certain we known bar / restaurant franchise. That is approx 4.5 TL at current rates. How can they import and sell at that price when certain places over here try to charge 5+?

Again - dont like price - go elsewhere. There is a choice over here if you are willing to look and forget that you are not in the UK.

Re the pies - go south - insurance / petrol etc. - is it cheaper??

Bells is not too bad on the whole, considering the embargoes etc. You should try buying imported goods out here in Oman or the UAE. For example a 1l carton of Waitrose orange juice can set you back over £3.50 in some places! A 33cl bottle of Amstel Light and a White wine spritzer at a hotel here the other night came to £13!

The costs of running any business in this country is prohibitive, you would not believe the import duty, tax, vat that is charged, hence why so many businesses are struggling, it is not cheap or easy to run a business here. You should have lived here 16 years ago I remember making a trifle and it costing me 24.00 sterling to make just because imported food from UK was so expensive and limited.

I only ever go into Bells when i'm feeling a bit flush, and everytime i go in, it feels like Christmas, with all my favourite yummy foods, so it's a real treat for me.

But if i am not feeling flush, i avoid like the plague, as i could easily end up seriously out of pocket....

I think the breakfast deal they are doing is super too....8TL for a full breakfast...followed by Mambos for a 7.50TL lunch....BARGAIN! Finally it's becoming fairly cheap to eat out in the TRNC...perhaps i shall start going out more now!

I appreciate that the owner of Bell Foodservice Ltd offered quality frozen food when the big supermarkets only had a limited choice. He deserves some support to survive in troubled times. And if you think the prices are to high - don't buy there. But at least stop trying to tackle Bell and send the shop into bankruptcy.

Here's the place: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/DSC_3171.jpg

And here's the menu: http://www.allcrusades.com/BB_pics/bells_menu_7280.jpg

Make up your own mind.

I think the import duty cripples businesses trying to bring in goods from outside sources, also unlike the UK where you pay VAT once you earn over I think its 40,000 sterling here you pay from day 1.

Without knowing what difference is between the buying and selling price it is impossible to say whether it is a rip off or not.

We all have a choice to buy or not.

However i am sure that there are businesses here that shop in the South avoid customs and sell at a profit.

Is that morally right???

Not only the taxes that cripple business what about the electric bill? My local village supermarket showed me their monthly electric bill and it was 2000 turkish lira, what do you think Mr Bells bill might be?

erm, when i was in the uk i would pay between £4-£6 for a water melon, here its between 40-60p i found a lot of turkish foods more expensive in the UK than here. Of course foods that have been imported here are going to be pricy but it works both ways.

hee hee its a good job i like and know how to cook turkish food

hipps if you shop north or south its no difference. our electric bill for august would pay your next trip. customers here NOW want differed things, the red lion gets sweed as we do from where. its supply and demand to survive sadly, wouldn't we all love to get good wines now asked for by tourists , expats live with the wine here. 3 air con units all day and each evening but its what you have to do here. pc4854, i saw his bill to keep those freezers going to supply the ex pats. you moan and groan not you hippo but some realise what some do to keep you happy. Some want angus beef, duck not the ones here, and in all honestly we wouldn't serve beef from here after the disease they have and still being sold, you want foie gras you want oysters. Its a different quality of customer now all be Russian and British and dutch, they can and do get mezzed out

I bought some Holland steak and kid puddings the other week at Bells, can't remember how much they were but it definately wasn't 25tl. Bought a 1kg beef roasting joint, the puddings and a few other bits and pieces and had change out of 50tl. So unless the price of puds has gone up significantly...............

Anyway, I must have seen the price on the freezer at the time and have been ok with it. If it HAD been 25tl I would have given it a miss.
