cyprus today interesting article on who really knows the population of trnc

and have guessed it by subscribers with mobile phone accounts 300.000 plus

some are estimating at 500.000 including ilegalls

yorg, I am not sure about latest results but 5 years ago it was estimated that 64% of the population of the United Arab Emirates where from India/Pakistan/Sri-Lanka alone. I believe the citizens percentage was lesss than 10.

However you have to bear in mind that they had loads of money and paid peenys for massive amounts of labour.

yorg, I agree with you once again and now they have the problem that all of the immigrants want low cost housing because they can't afford to live there and will just go into hiding to avoid getting deported so will become illegals.



Blackpoolfan, I doubt you would even be able to get accurate figures in the UK, they would get fudged by all the local councils so they don't have their budgets cut.

I suppose that is a start, but I think the main issue is the amount of mainlanders that are coming in from our ports with only having to produce a kimlik. Another issue is the type of mainlanders that are coming here...



There is no monitoring system in place to pick and choose who actually enters our ports hence our neighbourhoods, towns & villages are gradually getting overloaded with Turkeys riff raff..

Thats exactly whats happening here at the moment.Ministery of education have today sent homes of none citizens leaflets,demanding proof of their work/residency permits of the parents.

That is interesting and I suppose quite a good idea.

In UAE they have gone for an ID card system that is linked to a legal residency and all banks, bill payment offices and even telephone top up systems will not allow you to do anything without swiping the card first and if you lose legal residency they can cancel the ID card electronically so you will be stuck. Unfortunately this has been happening for about 2 years now and still hasn'tr been initialised. A good ide that will cost a fortune and might never actually happen.



Sorry, I know that won't happen here and me discussing with you what might happen won't change anything but it is interesting to know that they are at least trying to do something.

It's not really surprising there are so many mainlanders in the TRNC - almost everyone you deal with in bars/restaurants/pool cleaners/car hire drivers/gardeners/cleaners etc etc are non-Cypriot.



Cypriots go to university and work in the civil service or offices, much like the UK where we pay unemployment benefit to 2m , yet there are similar numbers of eastern Europeans who have found work here....
