Hi, wondering if you can help.

My 24 year old single daughter has just been offered a job in Nicosia that she really likes the look of.

The pay is equivalent to £1100 net per month but she really has no idea of the cost of living in Northern Cyprus.

She will obviously be looking to rent a 1 bedroomed flat and has been advised to buy a car, but after these expenses and the associated utility bills will she be left with sufficient money to have a fair lifestyle even after paying for a couple of flights home per year.

It is difficult to find a 1 bedroomed flat in Nicosia but plenty of houses with 3 bedrooms. The population of the universities have gone down this year and therefore it is relatively easier to find a house for rent and I believe the prices have plumetted. So if she can find a couple of friends to share the same house, it should be plane sailing.

Hi Bazza

That is a fantastic starting salary for TRNC - are you sure that it is not the Greek side of Nicosia that has offered her this job? Ask her to check out the financial standing of the company that she will be working for, there are many that make many promises of obtaining work permits, secure employment etc but the reality is a different story. It is common for companies here to not pay their employees regularly which is completely unheard of in UK.

If it is all true then she should be able to manage on that money, maybe if she could flat/house share as suggested by Elko then it would make it much more manageable. Cars are very expensive but if she can afford around 10000 stg this should buy her a fairly new economical one.

I think with £1100 pm net I would be concerned, if what my daughter was being offered was genuine.

No disrespect but its a very high wage for northern cyprus unless you are working in one of these dodgy call centres here which move around from one location to another all the time or a casino etc. Has your daughter been here before or have any friends here, as there are not many europeans living in Nicosia. She maybe better to get accommodation in Girne and get a bus into town or a taxi on that wage. She could buy a good 2nd hand car from an ex pat that is returning to the uk, for a good price, around £5000 is about right.

Good luck to her and her new job.

Thanks for your help.

The offer of a job is with what appears to be a very reputable company in the Turkish side of Nicosia doing exactly the same job she does in the UK, and earning a similar wage to what she earns in UK.

We have never visited Cyprus and have no contacts over there hence our concerns about her coming to the unknown but it just seems a great opportunity for her.

Ozankoys, how would we go about checking the financial standing of the company?

Personally, I'm afraid that Nicosia might not be the best place for a single English girl to be, if she has never been here before. She would be much better off living in Kyrenia and commuting to work each day. Also, a car is really a necessity for living here, as without one you are very limited. I travel to Nicosia from the other side of Kyrenia every day, and it takes me about 20 mins using the new road all the way so it's not a problem.
