Good luck Meral but as the Turkish saying goes, I think you will find it easier to get a camel jump over a trench then get English people learn a foreign language

Not ALL Expats here are English. What makes you think Meralyil's message was aimed solely at the English?

Many expats here speak passable Turkish, learned since their arrival on this Lovely Island.

We are about to complete our TRNC purchase and have picked up some basis Turkish from a CD tutorial. In fact yesterday, to the amusement of the staff at our SW London Turkish restaurant, I ordered part of the meal in Turkish.

We are guests in the TRNC and the expats should show respect to their hosts by, at the very least, making an effort to speak the language.

What a fuss is made when immigrants to the UK cannot speak English.

Meral, when I can spend more time in the TRNC I shall be pleased to attend Turkish lessons.

Aillettoo,

I am aware that not all expats are English but when you start learning Turkish you will find out that the British Prime Minister is referred to as "Ingiliz Basbakani" and Britain as "Ingiltere". So your PM should protest when introduced as the PM of England. As if they care!!!!!

Elko... I am Irish. and speak passable Turkish and continue to learn.

My Prime Minister (An Taoiseach) Brian Cowen, would indeed, I think, have something to say if he was introduced as the Prime Minister of England.

Heh Heh, the very thought of it!

Elko I can speak two other foreign languages and made every effort to learn Turkish and when I went to practice things I had learnt around North Cyprus, everyone wanted to speak to me in English. A very different story in Turkey where they help you out and also appreciate your efforts to learn their language.

"I am aware that not all expats are English but when you start learning Turkish you will find out that the British Prime Minister is referred to as "Ingiliz Basbakani" and Britain as "Ingiltere".

Surely that's a fault of the Turkish!

It would be very rude and a gaff in diplomacy to point out the mistake just as it would for me to point the grammatical errors in your post... "I think you will find it easier to get a camel jump over a trench then get English people learn a foreign language"

We've been learning Turkish for over five years... and we know many others are trying to learn too. Getting locals to stick to Turkish is a real hassle...

Ismet. We lived in France and had to learn the language because, unlike here, no-one would speak to us in English. Since living here, I have attended quite a few turkish lessons, as have a lot of my friends. I am English.
