A dear friend of mine, TC, hasn't completed [or even started I believe] his spell in the Army.

He left for the UK as a teenager and has never returned.

His [and obviously his family too] concern is whether he will face problems when he returns to the TRNC.

I'm asking on his behalf as it is very likely he will return as his mother, also a TC, is terminally ill and wishes to be buried in the TRNC.

He is in his mid 50's totally not army fit and obviously concerned as he says, he might not be fit to fight but he's fit enough to peel a potato!

As far as I'm aware he will still have to serve his conscription unless proven medically unable to.

thank you LaptaMike.

Would if be acceptable for his UK GP to prepare a report if applicable? Bless, he isn't the fittest of men but I wouldn't know whether he was medically unfit.

Would it be the TRNC GP that would complete said medical?

As the only male in the family he feels it is his duty to take his mother home when the time comes; if he did have to stay and complete his spell in the army, how long would it be?

i thought once you reached 50 you no longer had to do your army service.

As far as I have been told, the very minimum is to begin the procedure up to the point of the medical check up which it is very likely he would fail and that would be the end of it, I have no idea if they would accept or even entertain a document from a UK GP but it wouldn't do any harm to get one just in case and then there is the odd chance that even after taking a GP document from the UK to the army doctor, they don't fail him.

Now there is the start of the question, is it worth taking the chance !

if your friends resides in the uk he can come to northern cyprus and go to asal sube in Nicosia where they will issue him with a paper that would allow him to stay for 90 days then he must leave again. im sure he's too old for army service now but maybe someone can confirm that.

MSG 1;

He/any male TC that has not done their national service are not allowed to stay in TRNC for more then 90 days per year. However, there are NO age limits if one wants to do it.I had the expirience of helping out a 65 year old TC not long ago to obtain hospital papers so that he did not have to do it.

Of course, one can always buy ones time.Pay £1500 and do 4 weeks or £3000 and do nothing and become a freebird.

vonny, I have read about expats becoming citizens (maybe it's different for them) and even in their 60's and 70's having to do conscription. Don't know how true it is, could be complete bull. Proger1, I agree that a UK GP's letter would probably be worthless but still worth bringing anyway.

Dreamydiver, I hope he gets it all sorted and doesn't have to do his bit in the army ;-) Take care

Only paperwork abtained from local hospitals are valid.Must be refered there by army hospital in Nicosia.Paperwork from your doctor and prescriptions with your medicines will help.

The law used to be that an over 50 year old TRNC expatriate returning was exempt of military service, but that was 14 years ago!

thank you all for your help. I'll pass the messages on to him, hopefully they will provide him with some glimmer of hope as he has far more worrying concerns with his mother being as ill as she is.
