Hi Girne 29, not sure there is a dialysis unit in Girne, I think the nearest is Lefkosa.

Thanks Bradus I expected there wouldnt be in Girne ,but NIcosia wouldnt be a problem. I have tried 'dialysis trnc' 'dialysis north cyprus'' ''renal care trnc''and north cyprus. ''Medical Care trnc'' and no information. Every query seems to link with pages of repetitious property related sites. See that Frank and Joan had charity event for dialysis machine so doesnt look to hopeful,. The NHS and Renal Support Groups has a list of all units abroad ,unfortunately TRNC doesnt count, only the south. Its obviously quite important to find out if the system operates as in the UK,and what spare capacity there is ,if any. Portable units are available but even then backup in the event of problems would be required. So any site with info on the state of renal care would be appreciated.

The only information I have seen regarding Haemodialysis therapy, concerns fund raising events. I think the British community have been doing alot of fund raising for the Lefkosa dialysis unit, as I have seen a few articles in newspapers. I teach nurses how to do haemodialysis so have took a keen interest when I have seen anything relating to dialysis. You are right about the TRNC not being on the list, most units that can accomodate holiday patients are generally in the EU. Would it be a good idea to check where the ones in the South are? You might just be able to cross the border. This would not exactly be convenient as with the dialysis and travelling time, it would take up a full day of your holiday for every session attended. However the alternative would be for you to pay for the dialysis sessions in the TRNC. The average price is often around £300 per session. Sorry I can't be more helpful. If I come across the name and address or email address of the dialysis unit, I will forward it to you. I'll have a peep at work tomorrow and see what I can find out. Sue

Hi Girne 29, I have copied and pasted this from TRNC villa owners forum. It was posted by someone called mermaid.I hope they don't mind me pinching this but it came up when I did a search and as you say there isn't much information out there. It might be useful to you as it suggests some contacts. The main renal unit is in the state hospital in Lefkosa. My advice to you, however, would be to go and have a chat with Dr Ozgur Cetiner. He works at Lefkosa in the mornings but is available at the Girne Private Hospital in the afternoons. Renal/urology is his speciality and he is very good and a very nice man. I'm sure that he will be pleased to give you any information that you need. The phone number of the private hospital is: 0392-8155777, his mobile no is: 0542-8521681

Many thanks Will follow up on phone numbers. If it was in south no problem.Limassol, paphos, nicosia covered. Nicosia Aretaion charges £150 per session and operates every day.Only one weeks notice is required. The organising would be done via unit co-ordinator in UK. Dont think coming over the border 3 times a week is an option,if for some reason it closed then big problem. So looks like being state hospital or nothing. I was thinking that if the renal unit co-ordinator in uk was given the info ,telephone numbers, doctor ,then info between the two hospitals might be possible.

Thats how it is usually done. Does the hospital you attend have a holiday co-ordinator? Usually admin staff fax all the details to the visiting hospital and the hospital will then fax details back of allocated time slot and ask for further details on dialysis prescription. Ask someone from your hospital to do this on your behalf. Good Luck Sue

Hi Bradus I am not the one requiring the treatment. After a good 22 years the kidney I gave my brother has given up. Last year wife and he were going to stay our place Girne, but moving house, and ill health prevented it. He talked often of coming over but the deterioration in his health means that sooner than later it will be impossible . I am trying find out if it it is practicable for him to go ,and then the intention is that I ,with the help of his wife , will do the arranging .Keep it a surprise . As I also attend the renal unit I will arrange to see the unit co-ordinator and pass on the info that has been given here ,and see if it can be handled by the unit, without the knowledge of my brother. I also wanted to do as much research as possible so as to not waste the units time. If being in the trnc causes admin problems, then I can use the contact numbers myself.

| 22 years........pretty good. Lots of respect for people like yourself that donate their kidney, it not only adds years to peoples life but makes such a difference to the quality of life. (All forum members, please consider carrying a doner card and let your relatives know of your decision to donate) About time someone invented a more portable dialysis machine. They would make a fortune. I wish you luck. We have a holiday co-ordinator so I'll have a word with her and see if I can get more information. Wonder if Girne has a satellite unit? Catch you later. | Have not got your email address so this is turning into our own private forum! Spoke to holiday organiser and she gave me this link. http://www.globaldialysis.com It gives you information about all the dialysis units throughout the world. I have also picked up a leaflet which we give our patients regarding health risks of dialysis abroad. If you wish me to post it to you, please email me your address. It contains a checkist of things to do when making arrangements. Sue |

Girne 29. Glad to see the information that is coming out as it must be a great help. What are you doing with regard to the travel and holiday insurance? Your brother must have some. 1] To cover other non related problems 2] In case he needs serious help in regard to the kidney problems. Tom http://www.flightholiday.co.uk

Tom Previously he had cancer in kidney but cured, also heart valve operation.and Insure and Go covered him ,they are used by a lot of kidney patients. The rule appears to be that as long as your medication hasnt been altered in prior 6 months then that condition can be covered,at a cost. Now tho with being back on dialysis combined with the other conditions then unlikely kidney related problems will be covered, however insurance will still cover for travel and non related medical . I suppose once stable for a few months then cover might be extended. Will have to check if his other conditions also mean problem with private renal units as they might not want to take anyone with complications. Bradus ,again thanks, had been into globaldialysis but again only applies to south. Have e-mailed you.

I have just had my 31 day annual travel insurance renewed with a small excess and surcharge (still a avery reasonable sum) and I have two seperate heart conditions as well as a long standing bad back and my wife also has a long term problem. The cover is worldwide exlcuding most of the Americas. I understand the insurance problems all too well. One specialist insurance company wanted to charge me nearly four times as much for 14 days away in Turkey and North Africa!

Girne 29 Sorry I forgot to say. Do not forget to talk with your bothers insurer before you book the tickets or anything else* and let them know of any health changes etc now and right up to departure. *They may add further exclusions or excess's which you will want to know about.
