Is this evident? So sad.

RE Bradus, msg 1: (...) Is this evident? So sad. (...)

=> Wrong board for anything cultural, Bradus. The barbarians here (I guess around a hundred members excluded) want this: "Lidl opening - what does it mean to North Cyprus stores" : 2325 views - and I bet the viewers don't give a damn about the local stores. It's evident. Sad, indeed.

Well, I'm off to Macro's on a day return. Spend a 100 quid and the flight is free, black bag included!

Agree that this is so sad. We visited only last week and it's soul destroying to see it in such a state but then there is little pride here in TRNC. People seem to trash everything. When you mention anything serious on this forum the morons get on their soap boxes. I guess Attack is the best form of defence. Let's all talk only trivia eh?

It is so very sad. Bradus Dutch tries his best to bring us culture and the history, to little avail as he says a supermarket gets more interest. I really do not know mitsi why this place has turned into such a rubbish dump, im begining to wonder if its because there are so few real TCS living here anymore, they are so out numbered. What pride would they take.

Such a shame to see rubbish like this and the place falling into disrepair. Where is the pride?

Like everything here, the story is not as straightforward as it first appears. As far as the RoC and Greece are concerned, any work done (apart from emergency rescue, and this doesn't fall under that heading) is considered unauthorised and vandalism. They have made it clear that anybody working on TRNC heritage will not work anywhere in southern Cyprus and Greece, and they will do their best to ensure they don't work anywhere else as well. In addition, they will try and ensure that they put pressure on the people that are funding the work and funding the organisation that's funding the work to get the funding withdrawn.

Consequently most work is funded by the TRNC and a certain amount by Turkey, and I'm afraid there are higher priorities.

Sad, as it's the heritage of the entire island, but we're up against the attitude of "If I can't have it, nobody's getting it"

This is what happens when TCs move out and mainland cheap labour takes over!

On a recent visit to Salamis ruins with some overseas guests, I had a verbal with one of the import "care takers"(?) when: First I could hear him shouting rudely (in Turkish) at a couple of Russian tourists taking pictures posing on top a rock structure, then telling off my guests for climbing up over some sandstone steps to higher ground to see the surrounding area.

When I challenged him by shouting back even more rudely and asked him what was his problem and why he was being so rude towards tourists, he blabbered something (in half arabic accent) about being ordered to keep people off historic structures, which of course was a poor excuse for his power trip! I told him I was a TC who grew up in these ruins and its the first time I hear of such nonsense!

Anyone who has been to Salamis knows, you have no choice but to climb all over the place to be able to see anything...

I know there are problems - but please, the ROC side do try it on a bit. This article (with the SAME photo) was published around 2 years ago in the Famagusta gazette. I visited Othellos tower in May, and whilst I agree more could be done to improve its standing, there was no rubbish, no bottles, no excriment in every corner (dog, human or otherwise). The booth was manned and there were leaflets on the layout of the castle. We have also visited St Hilarions, Girne Castle, Salamis etc. All were clean and staffed.

As I said, more could be done to look after and promote these places, but dont fall for the propoganda being wheeled out every now and then by that lot.

Message 12 - I was there in September 10 and as you say the area could be better - but it did not look as bad as stated in the message 1 link.
