Finance Minister Ersin Tatar has said that the future of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus relies on tourism and therefore they are trying to promote the country as a new destination for tourism. Finance Minister Tatar flew to Turkey yesterday morning upon the invitation of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry.

Finance Minister Ersin Tatar attended a meeting regarding the promotion of the tourism sector in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus while on his trip to Istanbul.

Speaking here the Minister said that the TRNC was sincerely devoted to Turkey and was always trying to strengthen and improve its relations with its motherland.

Pointing to the increase in investments made in the TRNC, Mr Tatar said real income was being made from tourism, trade and education.

‘Our future relies on tourism and we are waiting for more investments to be made in this field’, said Tatar and added that the government was trying to promote the TRNC as the new tourism destination.

He noted that he would be meeting with Turkish businessmen while on his trip to Turkey and added that it was his aim to make the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a centre of attraction for investments.

I think the words "Wake UP and smell the coffee" No1

They have been saying this since I started holidays on this Island over 7 years ago.

Same script, different minister, same result. Zero increase in tourists.

Sorry for sounding negative, but heard it so many times and from Cypriot friends who own hotels and then as the season ends the only words are "tourism is down"

Have they any plans to clean the beaches and rid the island of the many rubbish tips that appear to be springing up all over? Or has someone simply got a new Tourist Minister's post?

Does Turkey know what it's like in the TRNC? Perhaps we should send them the latest photos of historical Famagusta?

eager,

Never has a truer word been said. As an owner I am truly disgusted at the state of our beaches and the lack of any recycling policy by the goverment or locals. This will be the downfall of tourism on this great little patch of Cyprus

We found our way to a wonderful beach, miles from the nearest village, down a dusty track that seemed to go on for miles. When we arrived at the beach there was not a soul to be seen apart from the owner of a new beach cafe which he was still working on, .....Which ever direction you looked in, up or down the beach, there was no-one. Where then did all the litter come from? There was so much of it strewn around the coast that we could only surmise that it was being washed over in the tide from Turkey.........no way could TKNC alone be responsible for all the filth that litters it's beaches......

Without inciting a riot I think the reality of all the problems in the TRNC are Cypriots themselves.

Most of them are lazy and unskilled and quite corrupt too.

Same in southern Cyprus

Lilli. if you think that ,then you havent been to Turkey on holiday very often. The Karpaz is nothing compared to the Turquoise or Aegean Coast, never mind the rubbish everywhere.West of Girne is far nicer than Karpaz, but still cant touch Turkey

Shrimp

Come on. no excuses.

Have you seen the beaches in Turkey?,they are as a whole kept clean,so the rubbish isnt there in the first place to be dumped on Cyprus.

Was all the rubbish washed from their beaches and ended up in Cyprus. What about the beaches in ROC ,they will be just as filthy then,

The currents should mostly help Cyprus, out of the many currents that operate in the Medi, there is only one that goes too, rather than away from Cyprus and that runs parallel to the coast not directly onto it. It runs east to west tween Turkey and Cyprus, its the same current that moves down each coast.

So ,whats the difference between the turkish and TRNC coasts, the people and atitude,

The Turks appreciate the earnings from Tourism,NC has this atitude, supported by many Brits, that if you dont like certain things such as litter, you shouldnt come ,its the culture and nobody elses business if rubbish is dumped all over. The same atitude has also destroyed property industry.

The beaches in the RoC are EU blue flag beaches. .The municipalities around Protaras & Ayia Napa have people out cleaning the beaches each morning so they are spotless for the tourist. The beaches in front of hotels are cleaned by hotel staff so there is no problems with dirty beaches in the east side of the RoC

They should take a leaf out of Shayna beaches book the beach is cleaned every day all the sunbeds washed down and the sand raked over and no rubbish. A shame other places dont follow suit then tourists might start coming back.

"TRNC will have to make great strides to pull this off"

How does trouser quality come to affect tourism?

The laundering of black-money moving inexorably into the TRNC does not bode well for the future... dirty money brings its own baggage.

Can this man, Ersin Tatar, be the same person who pledged to help Kulaksiz 5 victims?

If so, there's no hope for tourism - in fact, with all the adverse publicity [filth and rip-off everywhere], it can only continue to diminish.

But as No 1 says (using someone elses catchphrase) "onwards & upwards"

My own opinion is that in the not too distant future things will start to happen in a positive fashion, once they get the obstacles out of the way

Chinaeyes, yes that is exactly where we were, there was just tooooooo much rubbish just to have been dumped there ......it was all along the shore line, and with no sign of any civilisation for miles (apart from the turtles), I cant see this has been just cast aside by revellers on the beach................

Still I think I would rather put up with some rubbish and far fewer but nicer people in the north, than the hoards of beer swigging ,night clubbing, larger louts that go on holiday in droves to the south, even if their beaches are cleaner. There is no comparison as far as I am concerned.....North cyprus far outweighs the south despite the rubbish. If the tourist industry did get on board the North would just end up the same, clean beaches yes, but all the otherunsavoury things would occurr - it goes hand in hand....keep it simple, that is what makes NC such a special place, no bling!!

shrimp. So what you are really saying that the beaches in Turkey are all clean because all the rubbish from them come in by sea to NC, have you been to Turkey? most of the beaches there are blue flag, the council collect rubbish from Hotels and households twice a day, paper & cardboard are re-cycled a seperate collection. The council clean the beaches and Hotel staff clean their beaches and don't charge for use of beds & brollies. The rubbish on Akdeniz had probably come in by sea from the other NC beaches, No way would I have a holiday in NC during the Summer in Winter we can enjoy it there without going on the beaches.

Perhaps if the flights can be sorted out that would be a good place to start, no matter how lovely the place is if people can't get here it's no use expecting a massive influx.

Pointless putting flights on if people don't want to go, airliners don't want to run at a loss.

It occurs to me that if the officials responsible for tourism, litter etc. actually had to do their jobs or risk the sack, then the situation would be a whole lot different. Works in the rest of the world.

Shrimp,

I think its becoming more and more difficult to sell the TRNC as this "unspoilt Med Island"

It might lack tourists but it is very English.........nearly everyone speaks English, happy hour is alive and well, pub quizs are common, together with those fish and chips nights that seem to be popular all over the island and now I see Bingo advertised on the forum.

Its sadly in danger of becoming a scruffy Benidorm but with no tourists!

CTA will be reborn as "North Cyprus Turkish Airways".

It said so in the Cyprus Today Newspaper and they have no page 3 girls.

So it must be right.

Message 24 "west of Girne" does that include the area where mining (copper) took place ?

I agree Turkey has some beautiful countryside /coast line but I have seen examples where rubbish is a problem too - especially after the week end picnics.

The Karpas in North Cyprus in my humble opinion is the best part of it - but does have parts that could be improved if given some attention.

I have been coming to Northern Cyprus for over 11 years and I loved it at first. It really was the unspoilt Med. I did not mind that it had a creaking infrastructure, as the friendliness of the people and good value in hotels and restaurants made up for that. I am afraid that it is the case no longer. To attract tourists the Country will have to offer something special, eg beautiful unspoilt countryside, or exceptional value. The countryside is still there but blighted by unfinished developments and rubbish. I know that to eat out is expensive for a reason(high prices for meat fish etc) but the tourist is not interested in the underlying reasons only how their pocket is affected.

The Government seems to be devoid of answers and seems to assume tourists will keep turning up without any real incentive to choose Northern Cyprus over other destinations.

I keep coming only because I have a house here and live in hope of a change

What is the solution? I wish I knew.

TRNC is a beautiful place, sadly some of the local people don't appreciate that which is why there is so much rubbish about, we have a neighbour who regularly throws rubbish down in the ravine at the side of us, the Belediye don't seem bothered by it so it carries on.

Everywhere needs tidying up and maybe the hotel owners could make a start, clean the beaches, get rid of the broken sunbeds, make tourists feel welcome, some effort needs to be put in to encourage people to come here again and without that there is no point in them moaning about lack of tourists, it's a case of which came first, the chicken or the egg.

I suspect their is no incentive for hotel owners to clean the place up, they prefer their guests to stay on their complex and spend their money.
