"In 1965 Turkey ratified the Hague convention of 1954 for the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict, but nevertheless after its intervention and subsequent occupation of Cyprus in 1974 it has been responsible for the devastation, vandalism and looting of the island's cultural heritage on a scale unworthy of any civilised nation, let alone a prospective member of the EU".

Oh and on the other side everythings perfect then?

It's all tosh.

the article is just another example of racist-tinted glasses and hypocritical to boot

think about collateral damage and random killings in anglo-america's two current wars

as well as franco-germany's steadfast opposition to turkish-eu membership, ever

paradoxically, many north europeans only seize on turkey's alleged "crimes"

because survey after survey reveals they simply want no more muslim neighbours

of course cheapskate journalism is one thing, and reality on the ground another

it is total nonsense that the cypriot/turkish side are not trying hard for a "deal"

but since the gc regime still claim to represent all of cyprus,

the same inexorable logic would give physical reality to revanchist dreams

and take over the north in deeds not words

the "negociating partner" long ago binned the anan deal,

the one time the communities ever got near to dealing with their very different histories

as the bloke famously said, "the bigger the lie, the more people believe it"

It's time for some Anti Greek propaganda retaliation - I was amazed some years ago when I visited the south and went to the green line, saw all the photos, saw the Turks with Guns etc etc etc. I was really sold the line by the Greeks.

The Turks did the right thing in opening up the border so that people could see for themselves. The Southerners have made a mess/balls up in the south and now want the pretty, nice, untouched north to play with and turn into a concrete jungle - nothing changes.

hildy, I'd say there is nothing unique to cyprus about mess/balls up

from portugal on the atlantic to bulgaria on the black sea,

and from latvia on the baltic to spain on the mediterranean sea,

the locals use gordon brown-style creative accounting and over-borrowed

and think an average foreign punter left their brains at home

...but er, nothing could be er, further from the truth, oh no

as regards the south of cyprus, it seems to me totally lacking in charm,

however wonky north cyprus may be at times...but I am probably biased

it is true the republic of "cyprus" have won the propaganda battle,

until recently anyway,

but has that actually got them to where they really wanted to be?

I'm reminded of the scene in "five easy pieces" where unable to get

his order from the unsmiling diner waitress, jack nicholson

smashes all the place-settings off the table and karen black chirps

"that showed her!"

at which nicholson growls: "yeah but I didn't get my order did I"?
