Customs officers were out in force this morning an elderly gentleman trying to explain why his Spanish registered car was being driven around. This was in Supreme carpark. I am sure he has been here a few years now.

The person in question has been here 1 week actually, The car has been on the south side for the last 4 months, when this person last visted here for approx 3 months, prior to that he was in Scotland and Spain for almost three years, He can not understand why the car has been impounded as it has only been in the TRNC for 1 week. I have told him to seek advice on this matter asap.

Strange how you think he been here for several years

we have a similar prob, our friend brought his car into cyprus via turkey last year. The drove south as thats where he works and now lives. Impounded greek side with a very heafty fine of 4,000 euros. The car is now back this side but to re register its going to cost 5,700 pounds. Bottom book on the car is not that. its a real dilema for him x

Sorry to hear it happened to your friend too Lilli. My car was also inpounded some time ago. I tried in vain to pay the duty to keep it, but it was too old to do so. I did arrange for it to be used by the cival defence, they never got the car, it was sold at auction, which annoyed me at the time. I feel for anyone who has their car 'taken', when they think it is legal to be here. This gent has only returned 1 week ago, and where we live, you can not get by without a car. He has rented one.

I have told him to seek advice, as car has not been here for over 4 months, and was left at a friends in the south, whilst he returned to Scotland.

If anyone has any advice to offer, i will tell him, he does not have internet.

I think this incident has upset him so much, that he is now thinking of selling his property.

helper im so very sorry to hear about your friend. Only 18 months ago we had ours impounded on British plates. Bought it here from a reliable source, all legal we were told. yes we are stupid for believing, i now see it on darkish plates, driven by a custom official, as many others do. i think in that exercise about 1500 cars on brit plates gone. The duty you have to pay to get them out glasses guide would need to re write x

When i worked for a property management company the gentleman was living here for a couple of years and his car was the same one as now i used to get his site fee payments from him. So he has only been here for a week this time but his entrys from before will count against him.

We brought our BMW touring R Reg with us and have used it since February without any problems. We have bought a new car which we now use.

Someone told us about occasional amnesty situations relating to cars - does this happen - he has been here 12 years and he said he has seen several amnesties relating to these cars.

Anyway, we decided not to use it and put it in the corner of the garden - where it is out of the road, covered up and not causing a problem.

I would rather see it there than being driven around by a customs officer.

As an outsider to this discussion, my opinion is that Deniz1 is more than likely correct and helper is either confused or trying to cloud the issue, the car will have been in the country for some considerable time with the exception of its garaged spell recently in the south (which dont count), it is more likely that the said person was trying to beat the system and unfortunately for him it backfired, and more people will be in this position soon IMHO

Msg 11

'There are always two sides to every story.'

Does that indicate that one can be a two faced bastard with impunity!

By the way I also know of the case, we were discussing it last evening in Happy valley and the concensus was the person had been pushing their luck, however if that was not the case then he has nothing to worry obout he will get his motor back lol

msg 9;

It is correct that occasional amnesty does take place.

However, keeping your car in your garden does not make it safe nor waiting for an amnesty makes the cost of import duties any cheaper since you'll be charged 60 tl for each month as a penalty.

No i am not trying to cloud the issue. He asked for my advice as this has upset him. I told him to go and talk to customs.

Buy a roughed up model of the car & colour you want on TRNC plates. Buy exactly the same model & colour car in pristine condition on UK plates and drive it to North Cyprus. When here swap number plates and lay up the worn out one until MOT arrives and then reverse the plates for inspection, then back again! Happy driving!
