headline is the Sunday times

Apparently they have been allowed to keep their jobs, as have those who have fiddled their expenses and those who have been involved in office brawls.

For me the most disappointing aspect of this seems to be that EU employees are promoted based on their length of service not on their merit. So those who have committed a major demeanour are punished by their being a delay on them being promoted. The punishment seems to be one year. This shows the hallmarks of a self serving beuracracy. What a shame.

Dear Ilovecyprus

I would ask for a link, but I refuse to pay Newscorp to view a news website... !

Keithr: care to give us specific examples to back up your 'interesting' contention - having experienced both 'cultures' - I'm sure you are quite far off the mark ...

If I was earning and fiddling the amount MEP's are paid, I'd be very tempted too!

I suspect you are right. The Czech Prime minister, who is suitably qualified to recognise a communist system, recognised it as such, saying the structure was not an evolutionary step forward, hence his reticence in signing the Lisbon treaty. I was astonished when he was booed and verbally assaulted by Eurocrats for saying so. This is a key marker of a regressed beauracratic system, not allowing or assimilating new information in to it's fold. Although it would seem hard to be sacked from the EU, one woman was recently dismissed for raising concerns over the EU budgetary system.

The main reason for Czech objections...

The Czech Republic also has an opt-out - secured by the Eurosceptic Czech President Vaclav Klaus as a condition for signing the treaty. He wanted a guarantee that his country would not be exposed to property claims by Germans expelled from the then Czechoslovakia after World War II

I already stated that I wouldn't be giving money to Mr Murdock's Newscorp, when I can read other sites for nought !

I can understand him wanting an opt out. That does not discount his personal observations of the EU system, nor does the tolerance of the Czech opt out mean that it is a system that is well functioning. It seems that it is mostly self serving and is arrogantly dismissive of the ordinary citizens of the EU.

Well I am pleased that you have found other papers to read. It sounds like the cost of the paper is more important to you than the quality of the print.

It is a shame that most of our papers are owned by foreigners and most have an agenda.
