This is official. The vigil will take place next Sunday 14th November from 4.00-6.00 pm at the roundabout near TRNC Parliament and the Turkish Embassy. This will be a peaceful protest with no banners, no placards and no slogans. Silence can be more effective and more demure.

I will be there with my candle and I invite everybody with TRNC id cards to join me. It is our constitutional right to stage such a protest without prior permission from any authority.

I invite all the expats to come and observe from a discreet distance. The more of you the better. Please show your full support. This is not the time for apathy or complacency. United we win, divided we fall. One for all and all for one. Time to show that famous British bulldog spirit. Think of the plight of the pensioners at Kulaksiz 5, all of them over 60. Need I say any more? Please see you there and no excuses please.

Please put down your names below if you intend to attend as observers or as TRNC citizens (please indicate).

Can I count on you?

Thank you.

ismet

IMPORTANT CHANGE: THE VENUE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "BARIŞ ANITI", THE ROUNDABOUT FARTHER DOWN THE ROAD TOWARDS GIRNE. For explanation see post nos 86 and 87 below

Well Ismet I am a strong believer in showing your intent.

I have broken my leg but next Friday final x-ray and should be up and about on all 2's or if not in a wheelchair, pplease give directions to the venue as I have no idea where the parliament and Turkish Embassy are situated.

We will be there of course, but what do you call a discreet distance? Far enough not to get arrested as foreigners have no right to take part even in a candlelit silent vigil and anyway, who in Government will actually be working at this time on Sunday evenings?

Hopefully Ismet Pauline will be allowed to stand alongside you as there is only ONE of her or two if you count me and she goes nowhere without me.

There will be an article on North Cyprus Free Press shortly. A Turkish language version is being sent to the

press and hopefully we will garner support from our Turkish Cypriot brothers and sisters.

Vigil will take place on the roundabout Sehitler Abilesi which is at the entrance of the road that houses

both the Parliament Buiding and the Turkish Embassy which are in a street called Bedrettin Demirel Caddesi/

I understand that this a popular place for such events/ I would think that the there will be room to observe

the roundabout from both sides of the road.

good job you never asked that of emily pankhurst you know the one that gave us rights to vote!

Surely you have to have someunderstanding of it you may not see what can be gained if youre a person of shortsightedness but its for the decent turkish cypriots to show their feelings to what is happening in their own country and their support of the people loosing their homes maybe its not affecting you at the moment

I think the question by Isabella is a genuine one. There may not be many people around at that time on a Sunday but I am sure the cameras will be clicking away onh behalf of the local papers and tv stations and perhaps a few farther afield. Of course we expect these pictures to be accompanied with some explanation at the plight of the victims of these property scams

msg. 2

Juliamoons,

I presume you are asking for directions from the capital of TRNC i.e. Girne

It is not a route I use very often but here is an an attempt from me. I am sure others will give better directions.

Travelling from Girne towards Nicosia, go straight at the main roundabout, pass the hospital and a few traffic lights including the one at Sabri orients hotel, then turn right and park at the car park just before the next roundabout. On foot if you turn right at the roundabout you will come to the parliament building on your right and the Turkish Embassy on your left and immediately afterwards is the roundabout where the vigil will take place.

Please, please, will anyone attending the vigil buy and hold / wave / shine a candle or torch for me as I'm in the UK waiting for our house to be completed - still, after 7 years. I promise to recompense you when we visit next year - when hopefully the house will be completed. Demonstrated here in the UK a couple of years ago outside the TRNC Consulate and would like to be there on the 14th. Best wishes to all who attend and thank you for doing so - John

Well that's a shame... Having suggested to Ismet that TRNC citizens of his ilk might be able to protest on behalf of the disenfranchised victims, I feel a bit guilty about not being there to support them but we will be approx 3,000 miles away on that day (our daughter's 18th birthday coming up and we are off to help her celebrate).

We will be with you all in spirit... good luck all and let's hope somebody takes notice.

Juliamoons,

That is the roundabout I described for parking your cars. Just before you get to that roundabout you must turn right and the parking space is immediately on your left.

the building on the right in the photo is the TRNC Central Bank. The roundabout where the vigil will take place is about 300 metres away towards the south.

I had a very apologetic phone call from Girne police just before noon this morning. They heard about the vigil and wanted to confirm. I stressed that it will be a quiet vigil with candles, no slogans and no banners, just a peaceful demostration. He agreed with me that sometimes a silent protest can be more effective than a loud vociferous one. I told him that I have arranged this protest on my own but any TRNC citizen who support my cause can join me, all are welcome. The non-citizens are welcome to come as observers and observe from a discreet distance. Furthermore, I explained to him that there may not be too many ordinary people about at that time of the day but our aim is to draw attention to the problems through the local media and if possible through international media too. This last point caught his attention. I said why not, its all on the cards.

I was invited to go and have a cup of coffee with him when I am next in Girne and I promised to to so.

I noticed too late - for which I apologise - that the thread about the "Candlelit vigil" was made a 'Sticky' when I started a new thread about location maps to the demonstration place in Lefkoşa (North Nicosia). You'll find more about the maps in this C44 thread: http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/49298.asp . Anyway, I hope the maps will help you find the place easyly. - Hans Doeleman.

Yes, you never know when the street lighting will go off due to an electricity cut, so you better carry a candle or a hand held torch with you when walking.

That reminded me of an incident that happened many years ago in Nicosia. This chap was riding his bicycle in the dark with no lights. The policeman on duty stopped him and was ready to write him a fine. The chap explained: Mr. policeman, can't you see its dark everywhere, we had a power cut a minute ago, so I have no lights like everybody else. Fair enough the policeman says and lets him off. Then the coin dropped and started to blow his whistle but it was too late

those who are being blackmailed into paying taxes for the builder to get the Kocan

those refused PTP unfairly

those with a very bad build/

the list goes on and on and on and on if I have missed your problem add it on/

My wife and I would have attended as 'observers', but it is also Remembrance Sunday and we are committed to looking after UK-based veterans visiting TRNC for their annual pilgrimage for their fallen comrades during the 54-59 EOKA conflict. Sorry, but a bad day for us - but you have our support. Best wishes and we hope the attendance is massive.

I think that Marion Stoke's presence as an observer at the Vigil on 14th November will show the government how seriously the property issue is being treated by all those involved.

I am really moved by all the support messages. Keep them coming and let us hope we get the wide publicity in the local media and hopefully many Turkish Cypriots will join me with their candles. Tell your Turkish Cypriot friends and ask them to join me. All are welcome provided they keep to the "Silent and no banners" rule. Don't forget the saying "Speech is silver; silence is golden'

Good luck to all that attend and thank you Elko for your personal support to the cause of justice.

Can I suggest (if possible and/or legal) that somebody supply a candle for each person that can not be part of the vigil but want to be. That way if there is say 100 people holding candles and then maybe 2 or 3 hundred candles just burning silently that would represent the the people that would like to 'protest' but can't due to local laws. It also represents the people who silently suffer at the hands of injustice in property scams.

Might make a great cover picture for a paper or two!!

Johnatcastle,

I was hoping that some kind person would buy a candle for me

I tell you what. Let everyone bring a candle or two with them. You know how the electricity situation is these days. We may have a power failure at any tifme. So its best to be prepared for it like good scouts

Seriously though, we can see how the situation develops and as I hope if there is no harassment from the police, then people can lit their candles to show their gratitute to those holding the vigil. Yes, let us say it is a show of gratitutde rather than a show of support.

If you show support, you may be considered as part of the protest but if you show your gratitude, you are not necessarrily taking part in the protest. Its all silly really, all foreigners should have been allowed to protest the property scams, failing that the authorities find themselves is such funny situations.

Keep the faith. Come and observe the vigil and if you like lit a candle to show your gratitude.

My understanding is that a small group of police will join in as "observers" i.e. observing the observers so to speak but I do not expect any harasment from any quarters. We may all go for a meal or something afterwards, on Dutch of course. No no silly, I did not mean that, we all pay for our own meals.

DC could not afford to buy us all a meal

Paulıne had a conversatıon wıth the secret servıce polıceman thıs afternoon and as ısmet says, they do not mean to cause us any problems. They are concerned that we may be joıned by people frıom the Greek sıde

but I do not thınk thıs wıll happen. We wıll behave as the good people we are and there wıll be no problems.

Just to say big thank you to Ismet and all the TCs who care about the guests with 'property problems' in their country and for all the non-citizens who will be observing.

As one of the purchasers at the Sun Villas site we were the first to go to auction and without the large turn out to support us I'm sure the the auction would not have been stppped. W wouldn't have the strenth today to continue to try to resolve our situation if it wasn't for the courage and support of everyone, and especially Ismet and Marion Stokes.

Sadly I am in the UK but I will have my candel lit and I'll be observing from afar at the vigil on Sunday.

Pollymarples,

What is this about "Ismet, as usual has been workıng hıs socks off on our behalf."

Tell Pauline not on your behalf but for himself. Remember, this is a protest by me in person, it is my protest and I told the police that is my protest. There.

From the lack of new posts I get the ımpressıon that some thınk there ıs nothıng that can be done.

Not so, we have to keep tryıng and although I know polly and paulıne keep harpıng on and on and on, ın lıfe

sometımes you have to just keep chıppıng away at the same old thıng untıl eventually somethıng gıves

Paulıne ıs so frustrated and very scare, but she keeps stıckıng her scrawny old neck out, wıth her personalıty

she has no optıon. Dıd any of you ever read 'The Perıls of Paulıne' guess you mıght all be too young.

She has a sıster called Beryl, guess theır mom read too many comıc books!!

It ıs not as ıf we are askıng for somethıng so unreasonablwe. Justıce ıs everyone's bırthrıght

I spoke to someone at a very high position at Kibris newspaper and asked him to publish the artişcles sent in by Pauline or to make a news item about the event. I am very hopeful that something will appear in Kibris tomorrow or Saturday. I have also written to Havadis, Haberdar and Yenidüzen newspapers about the event. Let us wait and see.

Pauline has published a letter she sent to Ilkay Kamil = Minister of the Interior on the 11th May 2009

Anyone reading that letter must have known that WITHOUT action what is HAPPENING NOW would happen.

You can read it on North Cyprus Free Press

I take it everyone is just going to be in the area to observe apart from the people who can legally protest and are there any plans for people to meet afterwards

I just had a call from the Chief of the police, Mrs. Pervin Gürler.

They seemed perturbed about the venue, so near the Parliament and the Turkish Embassy but she did not say anything about it directly. However all the clues were there.

On 15th November, the dignitaries lay wreaths at six points and one of them is the roundabout we planned our demonstration. so they do routine security checks of these six points a day in advance and cordon them off, thus we will not be allowed to use that particular roundabout. I asked her what type of security check because its all concrete but apparently not so. If she says she will cordon it off, so she will and there is nothing we can do about it legally. So she suggested we postpone the protest to some other day which I refused, then she suggested that we hold the protest up the road towards Ledra Palace on condition that we do not obstruct the road. that was no good for me because I wanted a roundabout so that there is a clear ctd

natural barrier like a road between the protestors and the observers. So I suggested the other roundabout near the Central bank and the carpark and that was fine. Then I asked her for a favour to ask the police not to interfere with the observers who may carry a candle. She said that the police will not interfere however the police cameras will be recording and if they determine anything against the law they may prosecute. It was a non-committal statement.

I would say it is a matter of individual discretion whether the observers carry a lit candle or not.

So the show will be at the "Barış Anıtı" as seen here http://www.panoramio.com/photo/999390

PM, I think you'll find the Ismet is used to this sort of interference and is not easily put off, remember that you're just going to be observing whatever Ismet decides to do on behalf of Turkish Cypriot and ex-pat victims of "investment scams" as Greg Mulholland MP called them in UK Parliament. See http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com/2010/11/12/uk-parliament-takes-trnc-investment-scams-seriously/

See Paulines comment also. It sums up all the frustration she feels at the treatment she is receiving from the powers that be.

There is an article in Kibris newspaper today about the vigil. I think it was on page 10, not as prominent a news as the English gentleman who swindled his neighbours. If he was a developer/builder, probably the police would not have shown any interest

Strange!

When the Construction Association protest was planned last March outside Parliament in Lefkoşa there was a call for all to support this cause from the HBPG. Protesting appeared acceptable then?

Just noticed the time, and realised that the vigil must be on atm.

Praying that you will not be harassed by authority, and that something positive will emerge from all your efforts.

Thanks Ismet for making it possible.

Nobody got banged up, in fact there were more police then protestors/observers. Well done to Ismet who spoke to the press in a very passionate way just such a shame that more did not bother to turn up and support everyone who is facing property problems.

I think given the very poor turnout the message was still put across to the press and you never know someone might be listening.

Unfortunately it's always the same, so many just can't be bothered, but the fact that some managed means a lot to so many!

I can't thank Ismet and Pauline enough!

Richard (mess 111)

Obviously you didn't make the effort?

21 (indeed, only TWENTY ONE) foreigners (mainly British and two Dutchmen as far as I could identify them), 12 (indeed only TWELVE Cypriot Turks) and about 10 TRNC policemen: "THE DEMONSTRATION" in Lefkoşa (North Nicosia).

What more is needed to write here, except the following?

Shame on the people who moan and whinge on this board, day after day, the people who claim to be victims of building scams - but didn't show up when the CYPRIOT TURK Ismet Ustuner spend a lot of his time to show support for *you*, the no-shows in his demonstration.

So much for 'solidarity' in the foreign (mainly British) community.

SHAME ON YOU.

P.S. I have no problems with my builder, but I'm very pleased to have supported Ismet Ustuner. And I for one will never care for building problems again. Karaoke, F1, football, food, drinks etc etc etc. SHAME ON YOU.

This thread will be followed up by a thread with pictures, which will make the TRNC government laugh about your involvement.

I was able to got there just few minutes after 5 but it was finished, only some people in the car park area. Sorry I couldn't get there earlier. My friend told me he saw 5-6 police man in the area, 10-12 protestors and around 40-45 observers. I had watched Ismet Bey on the news, and his speach was quite good.

I just got back home. I think the attendance was pretty poor- about 40 observers and 15 protesters. The good thing was that the press was there in numbers and I will look at all the papers tomorrow and try to translate what they wrote. As far as I am concerned we had a good field day and I am hopeful we will have good coverage in the press tomorrow. The police were very curteous and helpful and I did make a point of thanking them for their time.

PS: I was pleased but not surprised to learn that the police were aware of what I have been writing on C44 and NCFP

Thank you for being there from all the victims in the UK who couldn't be there today! especially from me

Apathy seemingly rules in the TRNC as it does in the UK!

RE msg 117, Ismet: (...) the press was there in numbers and I will look at all the papers tomorrow and try to translate what they wrote. (...)

=> Good, we'll see tomorrow. But let's stick to the facts as I was told by an insider: ALL CYPIOT TURKISH NEWSPAPERS were informed about the demonstration and ONLY TWO PAPERS ran a small article. I hope you are right about "tomorrow", but I'm afraid that the little girl_with_her-candle (and no idea what is was all about) gets the attention. She was the most photographed 'demonstrator' this Sunday.

Hans the little girl was the grandaughter of one of the people from the other auction, sorry cant remember which builder. When you think of children her age you think innocence so maybe an innocent little girl holding her candle will grab the eyes of those in power. We can only hope!!!!

lets hope its more to do with quality than quantity. It appears to have been a very dignified protest.

Thank you.

As you can all ımagıne by the tıme Paulıne got home (stopped tohave somethıng to eat) tıme had marched on.

Yes the turn out was dısappoıntıng BUT to those who bothered - THANK YOU. Some arrıved a lıttle after the

start tıme. It dıdn't matter. The fırst thıng I dıd was wrıte my artıcle whıch wıll apeat shortly. I dıd a head count, and we made ıt about 40 ın total.

The lıttle gırl who had so many photos ıs Tara the 3 year old daughter of Pembe. Pembe's mum ıs a vıctım

of Tutuska. I thınk the polıce ınterference wıth our venue ıs the bıggest reason for the poor turnout. People were frıghtened. Combıne the permıssıon beıng denıed for the fırst proposed vıgıl, Paulıne beıng arrested

for her coverage of Geoff's trıal whıch we all know

was a botched up attempt to sılence her and they stıll have her laptop. NO summons receıved yet. The fact that Ismet and Paulıne receıved phone calls from the polıce vırtually every day on the run up, the press black out and you can understand why people were scared.

On arriving a secret service policeman glued himself to her side and made it very clear to her not to cross to the roundabout and not to light a candle/ He said he did not want her to give the uniformed police a reason

to take her away/ Make what you will of that. When she joined a group of observers\ he glued himself to Chris"s side/ Poor Chris gets dragged along whether he wants to come or not = joking he is Pauline"s rock.

There was a large police presence but they were polite and courteous/

Strangely this morning Pauline feels like a shaking wreck = reaction I guess/

I have just got the papers. There is nothing in Kibris and Afrika.

Our protest was the first news on Sim TV this morning and it looked good and it covered the basic reasons including a) how laughable it was for the Nicisia District Officer to refuse permission in the first instance and b) despite the fact that all British bought through their advocates and yet inspite of the fact that they paid in full they are likely to lose their homes. so its the system that is wrong and needs urgent attention.

Yenidüzen: Candles lit for Justice. page 4, almost the whole page with one pictutre showing the protesters and the observers at the back.

Havadis: Aggrieved English were not given the right to protest. Page 8. Half a page with three pictures, Pauline with Malcolm, Emine Çolak (head of Cyprus Turkish Human Rights organization) and my picture. A good writeup.

Halkın Sesi: Sislent protest with Candles. Page 15, half a page with two pictures, myself and the group of protesters.

Haberdar: They Searched Justice with Candles. In my opinion this was the best title because there is such a saying in Turkish which means "Justice is so difficult to find that you have to search for it with a candle". Page 3 with the haberdar Banner on top saying "Second Banner". Thus Haberdar had two banners today. It covered over half a page.

All in all, a very satisfying coverage.

Thanks for your information, Ismet. I'm sure THOUSANDS of foreigners in TRNC could hardly wait to READ about the demonstration. :-(

don't forget that the majority of those with property problems have no home here in which to live and are probably in their home countries. This meant they could not be with us. Kulaksiz 5 homebuyers' absence seems to indicate that they are happy to deal with their evictions without our help and North Cyprus Free Press for one are happy to help them to do so if that is their aim. Perhaps from now on Cyprus Today will keep up the pressure to help them? However, NCFP are happy to continue to fight for those who want our help.

Well, now I know how to record from TV, transfer to computer, convert to any format I like (thanks to information obtained through C44) and finally how to upload it to U tube and then link it to Facebook. It all looks like magic.

Pollymarples,

Please tell Pauline, the naughty one that I am going to set up a fun club if you keep praising me as if I had done something brave. Nothing of the kind. It was a simple demonstration and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did have some strong words about the District Officer who refused you permission, I called it, comic, laughable and ridiculous. It would be lovely if they charged me for insulting a government official but I don't think I am that lucky. Most attorneys know me and they don't relish a fight in court with me

I would have loved to have supported you Ismet as you have me when I needed you, if only it was a week later

It was a shame so many more didn't but to all those that did turn out thank you, I don't have property issues, but I respect the point you were all trying to make and lead others to do.

Ismet you are a kind and generous man and you look very dashing on TV !!
